CORRECTION!!! - ( STEP 10) - If the width of the spine is to have 12 rows of holes, there will be 13 spaces so width should be divided by 13 not 12. I actually DID divide mine into 12, but the spaces are so small that it didn't make a difference. If you are adding 4 signatures for example, you would need to divide the width of your spine by 5, to get equal spacing between signuatures :)

Yea, I noticed that... I was thinking ... does she mean 12 LINES, or 12 SPACES? So, I stopped the clip and counted... Yep, 12 LINES, meaning, 13 SPACES ;) I LOVE that template idea for poking the holes in the spine!!! When you do that first envelope, you suddenly speed up the clip... ARGh!!! I don't know how to do that 'simple three something stitch'. But I found a solution! I played it at 0.25 speed (instead of normal speed) and was able to see what you actually did. ;)

Dear Natasha, that was absolutely amazing, I just can't imagine why you would think that you may be confusing..... your tutorials are probably the best in the field. Your voice is calm, you are extremely detailed and you make me feel that I can do it. It's like you said, I always think that other crafters do everything faster than me, but when I listen to you I feel more energetic and confident and ready to start creating. Thank you so much.

This would be amazing for a monthly financial plan for a family, where each envelope is for a separate expense field. Say one envelope is for gas, one for groceries, one for rent .. etc. And you can plan everything and divide your income so you have some structure for how you spend your money.

I love that you add sewing! As a sewist of 50 years, I will add two tiny points here for you. Firstly, you'll see an improved look sewing around cover from the outer side. The bobbin side of machine does not produce as fine looking a stitch as the needle side. And where you stop & start, I would pull both threads to the wrong side. Once your threads are cut, gently pull up the bobbin thread up on the wrong side. The top thread will form a loop which you can pull with pin or awl. If you tie the two threads in a square knot, you'll never see a thread pop loose. If you are at an edge , you can adjust the knot to the wrong side. These were details taught in schools when home ec was still a required course.
@TreasureBooks
@TreasureBooks 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Tracey. I do usually do that, but for this project I did the sewing on the inside so that I can keep those bits of fabric tight while sewing :) I also do pull both ends to the inside but I haven't been tying a square knot admittedly, I just kind of put the threads together and make one knot. Thank you for the tips, I love tips!!!
@suestoons
@suestoons 3 жыл бұрын
My seamstress grandmother will be rolling in her grave, but I have to ask: When you say "gently pull up the bobbin thread up on the wrong side" exactly what does that mean? There are so many papercraft tutorials that use sewing as an embellishment that I'm considering buying an inexpensive machine to use just for crafting. After watching this tutorial for the umpteenth time, I think I might actually do it now. I'm concerned about sewing through the glue. Is there a type of needle I should get extras of for replacing inevitable breakage? I'm assuming that using the machine outside of its intended parameters will be hard on it.

I learned how to make junk journal’s years ago from KZfaq. It takes practice, start small, few envelopes, and learn the technique first, then you can Advance yourself. I didn’t have a sewing machine, so used glue. Once I Advanced myself, I used Buttons, lace, pockets, and much more, it was fun, and made them for gifts ❤️ KZfaq has a lot of videos for beginners. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this idea. I actually made two books for myself after I saw the first video. She's absolutely right when she says to leave the envelopes open so you can bind them! I managed to bind one after closing the envelopes but it was very difficult with messy needle marks and poked fingers. I had to create a separate spine from my cover and glued it into a new cover after the sewing was done. Not easy. I use one book to hold ephemera and one to hold my stickers. They sit perfectly on my crafting cart and are so pretty, easy to grab with everything organized!

I love the way you make the holes in the spine first! It looks so much easier and precise than the way I've been doing it (poking through both signature and spine at the same time). I have a journal ready to sew, and guess which way I'm going to do it! I Love your tutorials--they are so clear that I can watch it through once, taking notes, then watch again actually making what you are demonstrating.

Thanks for watching!! Please note CORRECTION!!! - ( STEP 10) - If the width of the spine is to have 12 rows of holes, there will be 13 spaces so width should be divided by 13 not 12.

LOL, I'm thinking just the opposite. It's a great way to use up the oh-so-pretty paper that I can't bear to use 'cause I'll never see it again. I'm going to use my prettiest papers so I can see them every time I use my ephemera stash!

I'm going to make these as Christmas gifts for crafty friends! I don't know if someone else has mentioned this, but you can improve results, prevent errors with the envelope punch if you actually measure on the two opposing sides. (I got this from a video on the use of the punch.) So instead of just rotating on the basis of one measurement, you flip a full 180 degrees, measure on the other side and then use both scored lines as the guides for the remaining sides. This is pretty much goof-proof, whereas rotating 90 degrees and lining up the score lines on 3 sides can amplify a small error due to simple angle of vision distortion. I had a lot of useless mess envelopes before I tripped over this advice.

Natasha - love this journal and your precise demonstration. Non-related to the content though, KZfaq put an ad every three minutes or so. I don't know if you have any control over this, but the ads sure are aggravating. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us.
@TreasureBooks

Ah ok. I don't have any control over the amount of ads put on a video unfortunately. I could turn them off alltogether, but then I won't get the little bit of $$$ that I get from ads :( I know its annoying, but I put many many hours into making videos

I think this was suggested to me because I've been researching the cash envelope budgeting method in prep to receive my tax return, but WOW. I want 10. Saving this video for later because I can think of so many uses and looks and sizes lol but I would also like to say that I read the comments, and this is one of the nicest communities I've ever seen! Everyone's words are so kind. What a happy corner of the internet, thank you ❤️

Thankyou. This is the first bookbinding project that I have done. Brilliant tutorial for a complete beginner and it turns out well. I made one of these for a friend who is having a baby soon. I did twelve envelope signatures - one for each month of the first year of her baby's life. It turned out really well. TWEAKS: I stuck some Unryu rice paper onto the covering fabric to give it some strength and made it easier to manipulate and glue down. I reinforced the inside of the bottom of each envelope with a strip of sellotape - just to give it a bit of strength for the stiching. I put corner brackets on to just finish the cover off. I pricked each hole on both sides of the spine with a sharp bookbinding bodkin. I did a test strip of the book cloth and card with the sewing machine to ensure that I had the correct tension and stitch size. I hand turned the machine through the reinforced spine sections as they were much thicker. MISTAKES: I had the outside of the cereal packet on the outside of the book - amateur error. Even having made bookcloth I could see the picture through the fabric and paper but it's not too bad really. I found it difficult to make a set of identically sized envelopes but actually - in the final outcome that doesn't really notice. It was a fiddle to get the envelopes stitched in correctly to start with and I did a couple the wrong way round so I had to pay attention to which way round and which way up the envelopes were.

I used scrapbook paper from Kaisercraft. It is not cardstock, but it does have some weight to it. Not the cheap thin paper, if that makes sense.
