In this video a patient with a supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) emergency allows us to demonstrate treatment of this condition with a rapid intravenous injection of adenosine.
This video is a revised version of an older posting. The next edition of the Roberts & Hedges textbook will be published soon, and that textbook uses a large number of my videos. I am revising, shortening, and upgrading educationally a number of my videos in the process. I will be reposting those revised videos on my channel for the benefit of new learners and viewers.

I experienced SVT many times. A treadmill stress test didn't find anything and when I went in to get fitted for a Holter monitor it actually happened live. So they hooked me up to the 12-lead and diagnosed me in a few minutes, including giving me adenosine which worked instantly. A couple months later I had an ablation and it's never happened again. 💪

Did you get put under completely? I am looking at getting an ablation. I have had these since I was 17. I’m 44 now and had unstoppable SVT over Christmas.

My gall bladder threw a lot of gallstones, blocking my ducts, giving me pancreatitis, and I was septic. I had SVT's for the first time. They gave me adenosine. I said, "Somethings wrong, somethings wrong. My heart has stopped" as I put my hand on my chest. The nurses were so nice and patted me on my arm and said "That's is what it is suppose to do". The nurses were on each side of me to hold my hand. The team was so nice. I'll never forget their kindness.

This was super helpful seeing it in person. I am a 3rd year nursing student and I didn't even know that type of syringe stopcock existed until now as well. I love seeing all of the real life action details. Thanks!

i remember during my regular panic attacks, at the doctors i got up to like 140bpm which was likely a mix of panic and the fact i was very low on iron(tho we were unaware in that moment)

@mrmja50 2 weeks ago Ive had SVT for over 6 years, after a few visits to the ER and IV's and adenosine once. I learned to convert myself with in minutes of an SVT episode. I stop what Im doing, and its usually pickleball where im already excited and my heart is higher anyways. I go lay down on my back with my legs up on something so they are higher than my head, and bent at the knee. I cross my arms on my chest and closes my eyes and think of a calm place and just breath slowly in through my nose and out my mouth very calmly. I always convert using this with in 5 minutes. Then I go back to playing or what ever I was doing. No more vagel stuff which always kept me to excited and anxious. Maybe it will work for you?

Yes. The textbook, Roberts and hedges, is preparing their new edition and I am going through my older videos that they want to use and cleaning them up and making them a little more educational.

@@lmellickThat's wonderful! Your channel is a wealth of clinical demonstrations and real-world know how. I'm always thankful for you taking the time to record and teach, as well as for the patients giving their consent to be shown on video (whether they are living or cadavers).

Yes, I am revising a number of videos and getting them ready for publication in the next edition of the Roberts and Hedges textbook. I am trying to make some of the older videos a little bit more educational. I am also shortening them where needed and making them a little bit more polished.

Dr. Mellick. A great teaching video. Glad to see the 6-12mg regiment is the same. I normally don't critique your videos, but the B/P cuff appeared very loose on the left forearm. Cheers, Sir. Jack, R.N. PACU Retired.

Here is the States, we have radial blood pressure cuffs. They are much more comfortable, fit better, and are more accurate. She'd be the perfect candidate for a radial cuff.

I'm surprised she could think long enough to talk. SVTs make you feel horrible, like you are going to die. Often you can break them yourself.

I've never had an episode of supraventricular tachycardia. However, as a rapid response RN, I've met many people with the dysthymia. Some people, like her, tolerate it very well. If they are very unstable, we'll give electricity.

My personal opinion is that the chemical cardioversion options are almost always preferable from a patient comfort aspect. Nobody wants to be zapped.
