Tree Guards: Protecting Trees from Mice and Voles

I think / headgardener2u one of the most important things a home gardener has to do is protect trees from being eaten by voles and mice. Here's the tree/shrub section of my websites www.beginner-gardening.com/gro... and here's the way I use to make a secure tree guard against mice, voles and rabbits. Fast to make, relatively inexpensive given it can stay in place for many years. The advantage over plastic is the wire tree guard allows air circulation and doesn't give a home to insects beneath it. The guard will stay in place for many years until the tree no longer needs it.

hi I just saw your channel for the first time.. thank you for your help I'm wondering I have a mandarin tree and unfortunately rats are eating all the mandarins on the tree I do have a horrible mess underneath every day will this work on the bottom of the tree?? The trer is close to a fence.. they olso are going from the fence to the tree as well. I'm going to have to have somebody help to throw away all the mandarins unfortunately.. I've been here many years and I never had that problem they are doing construction and the whole neighborhood is infested.. will you have any ideas of how I can protect a wooden fence???

Hi Doug. Thank you for this video. I will follow your directions but voles eating roots is my concern as well. Shouldn’t the mesh surround the roots as well and how deep should the mesh be buried? Thank you.

I have a major vole issue on my property. I never knew when I planted my orchard that the voles would eat the tree roots. My poor trees are so unstable and a few have died. I am thinking that I need to dig them up and surround the root balls in hardware cloth. But doing this might take less effort.

I did this and it keeps some vermin out but I saw some rats just climb over it.

How deep in the ground do you place the hardware cloth so they don't tunnel under?

6-inches give or take. Hasn't been an issue

@@douggreensgarden Thanks - I did a full foot down to be extra sure. And about 2 feet above ground. Everything we've planted so far has become vole food. Hopefully this will be the trick I need.

What the dimensions of the hardware cloth? How tall and what diameter is the wrap?

Hardware cloth at big box stores is approx 1m (3ft) tall. Diameter depends on tree - the ones you're looking at leave about 6-inches from trunk to wire. But this isn't rocket science - close counts so don't sweat it.

@@douggreensgarden Thanks. I've been making some, 3ft tall, and cut it to 3ft wide, which makes about an 10 - 11 inch diameter circle. I'm putting it around apple trees I started seed. The trees are maybe 8 inches tall now (started last year). I just hope the guard is wide enough as the tree grows, fills out with more leaves and starts to branch out.
