Tree Stump Removal With Angle Grinder

This is my experience trying to remove a decent size tree stump using only an angle grinder and a wood cutting wheel. I knew it was not going to be the 'easy way' but I wanted to try to find a way to avoid an equipment rental if I could. This is probably fine for small stumps but I wouldn't recommend it for bigger ones :)

There should be more uploaders like you who have the bravery and the intelligence to post something very educational like this. Well done for that. On the subject of the actual grinding itself: - it's never easy or fast anyway - your end result wasn't bad by any means, even before digging - had you cut it very close to the ground like you said with the chainsaw, and THEN went at it with the angle grinder it probably would have worked out just fine. - I think the best way and least expensive is to use the handyman jack (if you have one) and a saw cutting the roots as you proceed

I did something close to this today to a 14" oak stump. I dug a 5" deep trench first with a pick (about 2 minutes as the ground was soft). I then used a chain saw to make angled cuts making sure to avoid dirt contact as much as possible. When I get close to the end of the angled cut, I use a combination of a splitter wedge and sledge. Or, many times a good hit with an 8 lb sledge hammer will break it free. On this stump It took a total of 4 angled cuts with Sledge break-frees. (about 10 minutes). I then used a very coarse Kutzall extreme shaping carbide wood grinding / removal dish on my 11 amp - 4 1/2" Dewalt grinder to remove the top edges of the stump that was still too high to about 1-2" below ground level (about 2 minutes). Cover back over with the dirt & chippings. (about 2 minutes) Total time was about 16 minutes. I have probably done about 25 (less than 20" diameter) oak stumps this way.

I've been thinking about buying one of those stump grinder cutting wheels for awhile. It seemed like it would be kind of dangerous to use. I finally searched KZfaq for a video to let me know what to expect. Your video was the first one I clicked on and it showed me everything I needed to know. It made a big mess of sawdust to clean up and it took a lot of work to lower the stump. That was a great video...Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to post your experience. I too had the same experience several years ago with that same product. One other thing I tried was to burn the stump after cutting several gashes in it. A fire was set on top of the stump with old scrap wood. It burned it a bit but still needed grinding. Taking a grinder to a heavily charred tree stump produced a cloud of burnt black wood char that covered me completely and required two showers to remove. I do not recommend this method unless you have all the time in the world to get the job done.

I would consider this a success. Even though you could have rented a stump grinder, it would have costed you a few hundred dollars, not to mention the time and effort needed to go get it and return it. If you already had the grinder and circular saw blade carving disc, all you needed is a few hours on the weekend. What you did was creative and inventive. 👍

Thank you for your video. I was thinking of using one (or 2) of these to grind down roots in my lawn. I wonder if a 14 tooth blade would work better than the 22 tooth blade. Because the 22 tooth is supposed to be for more finer cuts.

Thank you for your honest review. It worked better than i expected for you. i think even renting a grinder is not ideal for large stumps, as you can only rent little machines compared to the large hydraulic beasts the allow you to dig down 8" into the soil that the arborists use. I would like to find a 7" brazed carbide disk with something like 16 grit rocks that allows lowering roots about 2" into the grass and dirt, but have not found one.

The best way to do this is called renting a stump grinder. And not the garbage toy that the big box store has I mean the real one that costs $500 a day. The other alternative is digging it out. I am a landscaper and I have done it both ways. I don't do it anymore I just call a pro.

@Rowen672
@Rowen672 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. I had tried using chainsaw, but dirt blunted blade, I tried drilling it with wood bits in electric drill. I then I tried angle grinder with normal grinding wheels, but as you say just burnt wheels and did nothing special. I had wondered if there was a different type of wheel to use, and yours looked promising but at least after watching this I know I would be wasting my time. Stump is in difficult place to reach, so it looks like I either need a narrow spade to get behind it to dig out, or use chemicals to rot/burn it away. Thanks once again for saving me time and effort. Kind regards Alan (in UK)

Remove a few trees at a time and hire a guy or rent. The cost in hiring someone is just getting the equipment there. I charge 150 just for showing up with my grinder then go from there. And if it's a 10 year old hardwood stump it will cost big. Some stumps harden as they age

It doesn't look like you're doing it correctly. You should probably remove the guard and lay the grinder down flat against the stump the same way you would grind a floor with an angle grinder. A diamond wheel might actually work pretty well on a stump. Also, it looks like you're using a 4.5 inch grinder. I would go with a 7 inch grinder. An angle grinder should be able to grind a stump as well as a floor.
