Jesus Christ, that is a good idea. I really wish I had thought of that when I was trying to get rid of a small grove of black locust trees/stumps. I spent weeks trying to get the job done by digging, cutting roots, and yanking 'em out with a tow strap. I've got some more of them still, you literally just made my day by showing me this, and saved me dozens of hours of work. Thank you!

I used to live in Wisconsin and a neighbor called the department because I was burning scraps of wood during in a steel drum construction (welcome to the neighborhood). When the truck pulled up they asked if I was cooking hotdogs. I took the Q and said "I was just about to bring them out would you guys care to join me?" We all had hot dogs, cokes, and chips. The Captain said it really pisses him off when people call them to fink on their neighbors unless there is something dangerous going on. I always kept the fire hot so it didn't stink things up.

I LOVE your quick thinking. We've pretty much given up on burning on our in-town corner lot. We would get the necessary permit, hover over the burn pile like a hawk, garden hose ready. Without fail someone would complain, or the breeze--theretofore non-existent--would kick up making ash. Next time, we'll have hot dogs ready!!! Thanks!

+Just Me Make sure outdoor cooking fires are allowed. Your are correct, you don't want to be stinking up the neighborhood or allowing ash to get on people's cars etc. To me it's all common sense and neighborliness.

Been there, done that, works great.I didn't have a leaf blower at the time, only had a fan but it still worked like a champ. the fire doesn't make much smoke when you provide that much air. Thanks for documenting the procedure.

I have been using this same method for years to get very large or loose or even soaking wet brush piles going strong. Just dig a small hole in the brush pile from the side at ground level and use some dry scraps to start a small fire then start up the leaf blower! Works every time. Thanks for the video, it's way better than using 20 dollars of some kind of fuel. Safer too.

I feed the leaf blower or the output of a shop vac into about 6 to 10 feet of 2" steel pipe, via some hose. That way, you put the air right into the middle of the fire, without burning the blower.. I have burned down as far as 3 feet into the ground, to prevent slow rot and sinking.

Thanks for the video, interesting technique. Just wondering if this tree was freshly cut ? Maybe stumps dry out a bit over time, especially in dry climates. Also different species of tree might vary a lot in their stump flammability. eg. have volatile oils
@BushPilot4448 жыл бұрын
If the stump is dry you can get yourself about a 12 in auger drill bit of at least an inch wide and drill straight down as far as it will reach, then dig out a little on one side and drill down in from the side at about a 45 degree angle and make the holes meet near the bottom. Get some fat lighter and drop some down the center hole, and light it. It will burn like crazy since the hole acts like a chimney with an air intake going to the bottom (45 d. angle).... it will burn itself out from the inside out down below the dirt level as low as you need. You can pile three or four one inch rocks around the hole at the top and cook up something while you sit there in pure amazement.

Used a "Lakeland" floor fan when burning some wood planks. Could set it right next to the fire bec. it self-cooled (the plastic disk on the front never melted (had you tripped over the cord & de-powered it, it would've lasted 10sec.!). AMAZING results as to the extra heat generated contributing to a much faster burn rate.

Near 200 comments and a good half of the questions had the answer right in the video, if they really paid attention. Coulda used a steel drum to burn it, coulda used a stump grinder, or coulda left it alone for mother nature to rot, but 20 cents worth of diesel (or a pile of scrap wood) along with an electric blower using another 20 cents of power means no extra trips and less time fooling with details. Good job!

drill a hole in the top as well as the ones in the side so the fire can breath better. Burns more of the stump away towards the roots too. Of course I like to cheat and use accelerant to get it started. But after it's started, it takes care of itself.

I think burning wood, logs, stumps, garbage etc is against the law in every state now. My neighbor tried to burn a tree stump and the fire dept and police showed up and he was arrested. He found out the neighbor behind him called the cops and started a 'war' with them ever since.
@eagleviewhd6 жыл бұрын
Lots of my neighbors have fire pits for backyard get togethers. Some even set them up in their driveways. What is the difference between that and burning a stump? I would recommend a fire ring or barrel around the stump. And lots of people burn firewood in their fireplaces in the winter. You can smell the wood burning. I think it smells good!

sorry I don't get it - but hey I'm a woman. So the stump looks chopped a bit, and somehow the fire was started. I get that the blower just keeps the flame going. What actually ignited the stump?
@NoahTheHomeInspectorTV8 жыл бұрын
the stump is almost rock solid and is not technically burning. i burnt scrap pieces of lumber under it and it kind of disintegrated the stump as we went thru 2 or 3 hours. the blower just helps the scrap wood burn at a higher temperature and disintegrate the stump roots quicker. the video doesnt show the multiple piles of scrap wood i went thru. thanks for watching!

Several people around here have done it and it works. Either I dig the stumps , flush cut them and let them rot on their own or leave them high and let my Sweetie put flower pots on them. This is on our place but when doing a grading job I dig them all. An old timer always said if you buried a bunch of stumps they'd come back to haunt you. So down the road they'd go.

My thought years ago was a heat gun, not just volume of air. If you happened to study rather than 'be taught' in school you may recall that an explosive change in steel production was Bessemer blowing compressed air into what he called a "Blast Furnace". If anyone tried a heat gun get or use some gas pipe, and I would add a 90 turned into the earth. 200 degree air is quite different than 80-100 degree. Also, have a hose charged and less than 10 feet away, and I would have perhaps 2x 5 gallon buckets full waiting. That way when Karen calls the FD, you have it under control, and prepared for the worst. Check before you start for burn ordinances.

How long did this take? $150 for a stump grinder is a much better deal if it saves you several hours per stump. Not to mention the amount of electricity it take to run the blower all morning.
@jonanderson51378 жыл бұрын
Even at 1500W the blower might consume 5KWh and at 12 cents per KWh is only 60 cents... yep, a real wallet squeezer.

+Jonathan Anderson on the weekend my free time is worth $50 an hour, if it takes 6 hours to burn a stump that's three hundred bucks. Obviously you don't understand economics the electricity was not my main focus
@jonanderson51378 жыл бұрын
I don't understand economics, maybe you should have mentioned your weekend rate of $50 an hour in your first post. If your time is so important, feel free to tell me how long it will take you to research a stump grinder that meets your needs, finding a rental place that has a comparable grinder, time spent driving to, loading, unloading, reading the safety precautions, using it, re-fueling it, driving it back to the rental place and then driving home. Here's a breakdown for my area, 25 minutes to the rental place, 20-25 minutes getting it loaded in the truck or adding a trailer to the rental, 25 minute drive home, 10 minutes reading the instructions, let's say it only takes an hour to grind the stump down below grade, reloading it and getting it fueled takes another 20 minutes, 25 minutes back to the rental shop. 10 minutes for inspection and 25 minutes back home. Roughly 4 whopping hours before the cost of the rental and that's if nothing goes wrong. so $200 in time and $150 in actual money. That's 7 hours for you, 4 hours of you absolutely having to be involved in the process. Might as well for the same price hire someone to remove the stump. There's the real answer, if your time is so valuable, why waste it doing physical labor and driving?
@NoahTheHomeInspectorTV8 жыл бұрын
+Tim Hanrahan a comparable stump grinder rental for a job this size in my area of Anderson SC would have been $330 for only 4 hours. This stump took me 6-7 hours to burn. That fee did not include delivery and pickup because I do not have a trailer big enough to haul that size grinder. I was told that the size of my stump would have required the medium size 25-30 hp grinder. Yes, I had to babysit this stump and feed it scrap wood most of the day, but I had nothing but yard work to do that day and was home alone as the wife worked. Electricity in my area is .12 cents per kwh.
