Trees need to be thinned to allow more light in and encourage the remaining trees to grow strong and healthy. Julian Evans shows how to select the trees, mark them, and remove them using a standing sale

The bark beetle killed much of our soft wood. We struggle here because we can't compete against the free lumber that the Canadian government gave to the big forestry companies. Unfortunately corruption at the upper level makes things difficult for us small scale guy. I found a small niche selling firewood and other forest products and I do enjoy my work. My operation and labour of love can be seen on my channel. Great information. Great video thanks for keeping it simple.

His stated his goal is timber. This is not about what is best for diversity, pollinators, etc. For example, it is best to leave some “standing dead” trees as they are a great habitat for insects, which in turn feeds birds and other creatures.

Wow, such a difference in perspective. I own a few chainsaws and I own a wood lot. This guy says only pros should have chainsaws and woodlot owners, hand saws. 😂 Other than that I agree wholly with the selective cut prescription.

I searched for this video after watching the anime, "Record Of Grancrest War". The importance of thinning of trees in forests is mentioned in this anime in a very interesting way!

thanks for posting. I've read forestry material suggesting to cut out trees in order to meet spacing of 20 to 25 feet -- > instead of cutting out every 3rd tree? or cutting out trees with spacing of 15 feet after 20 years, then 20 to 25 feet after 30 years, etc?

I have a wood that needs thinning. It has been over planted with non native Norwegian Spruce that is diseased. I want to keep all the other 8 native species. Circa 5 acres. How do you arrange a standing sale? The Spruce is straight and great for construction. Way too good to burn.

Lucky they don't ask the owner to pay! It should be given for free if worth the trouble!

If you repeat the process each year, in few years there will be only 1 or 2 trees left in the forest. Just kidding. Great lesson.

Not sure if I trust the advice about trees from someone who can't run a chainsaw big enough to chop down a 10 inch log. Not like it was a giant Sequoia
