I think it's because in China, we address strangers by family names. We call kids "little brother" or "little sister," young adults "older brother" or "older sister," middle-aged adults "uncle" and "auntie," and the elderly "grandpa" and "grandma." So if you've been called "sister" your whole life, then suddenly strangers start calling you "auntie," it means you have visibly aged 😂

Maybe the closest thing would be to walk up to chat with two young girls who are as young as you and ask if one of them is the mother.... someone who's atleast 40+ and has kids your age is seen as an auntie or uncle. So calling someone auntie means you think that girl is your mom's age 😂😂

This is very different culture between USA and China. In China, we call the middle age women auntie like one generation older, so it is common sense that you are not young any more if you are called auntie.
