The first one of these big tree spades was designed and built by a guy named Wally Stocker from Jordan Minnesota. He and a small town blacksmith built it, he tested it, and the continued to make improvements. That was back in the early 70's. I had him move three large ash trees for me. Eventually a bigger shop outside of New Prague, Minnesota, started to build them. Wally moved a lot of trees around Scott and Carver counties. Later Vermeer and other companies started to make them. The one that Wally Stocker built could move some pretty big trees.

Never heard your age, I’m guessing early mid 20’s. Wish our country had more young men and women with your desire to learn and get out and hustle. Says a lot about your parents. Enjoy the vids and thank y’all for what y’all do. General public has no idea what the farmers provide and do for us as a whole. Stay safe.

Chet, this has been one of the most interesting videos ever. Took a lot of camera placement and Nicki did an excellent editing job. This type of "off the wall" videos are what makes your channel so interesting. Think between you and "the big Swede" anything is doable. You make a good partnership in work.

If you were moving a lot, you could make an attachment for the wheel loader that would have a big ring. You need to make part of it so it can open to get the trunk thru. Once around the tree, you raise the tree ring up and tie the branches as you go. Owning a Christmas tree farm, we bale trees all the time and that basically is exactly what you are wanting to do. But for corn farmers I think your doing a great job. As always I enjoyed your video.

No harm in trimming off a few bottom branches. They starve for light anyway. Do you put the plug back in the tree hole? Internationals are dirty burners while they are cold. You don't need injectors, they're just like that. Notice all the dead branches in there that could be trimmed out before you dig. Given the girth of that shrub you did a good job. Ten gallons of water in the whole before the tree goes in helps too. Good vid Winny. Peace.

icebaby snocain it’s a Caterpillar Engine, not a n International, I think you mean the Max Force Engine. Generally if an engine smokes it’s time for a tune up. Also bad habit to start an engine without climbing in the truck to make sure it’s out of gear. Bad habits are hard to fix.

After transplanting over a hundred pine trees on our hobby farm, the one thing that kept all but a few alive was watering them thoroughly after the transplant and continued watering as much as possible afterward. I believe over the last 30 years we have only lost three possibly 4 trees.

Thanks for the video, always wanted to see this done. Yours and my family are of the same ilk- buy what you need and do it yourself. Sounds like this machine has paid for itself many times over, and you will never look back. You likely won't find much input from the experts here as they like their high fees and lack of competition.

I’m sure someone has commented this but I wonder if using a packing wrap/ big roll of Saran Wrap or some net wrapping would be useful to hold the bottom branches, it would be kinda similar to the net wrapping method used at Christmas tree farms!

I ran a Big John for 30 years. I have been to the Big John manufacturing plant in Heaber Springs Ak as well. I can fix and run that machine with my eyes closed. Whatcha wanna know? Use your outriggers to line up the spade from side to side in the hole. Use the tilt to line up the spade from front to back. It's faster and saves you time lining it up. Push the spade all the way down in the hole till the truck comes off the ground then tilt to line it up. Then set the truck back down and pull the blades. Easy peasy You almost made a 10K mistake by leaving the #3 blade down. Those things are 10K each. lol

A guy I know rented a tree spade from Menards to plant some trees at his new house many years ago. When he ran the spade into the ground to take out the first plug, there was a loud bang and he took out the power for the subdivision. When the power company came out, he asked if there were power lines where he was going to plant the second tree. They told him no so he took the plug out and a large telephone cable came out with it.

Your spade is definitely in better condition than my neighbor's. He's got an old Mack and he was trying to move a pine from his house/landscaping yard on one side of the neighborhood to a barn he's got on the other end. Well I look out the window and he's got an F350 assisting the spade in getting up the hill. It was quite the site. I'll try to see if my security camera picked it up at all.

I have a friend who own a logging company. Whenever he hires a new driver at the end of the interview he asks them to go out in the yard a start a truck. He hangs the keys off the oil dipstick. If they come in and tell him they could not start it because the keys weren’t in it they don’t get the job because he knows they don’t check oil before startup.

Lots of old growth trees here we live above the tree line. Mainly 60 to 100 foot white poplar and White pine with Birch and Spruce mixed throughout.
