I have just ordered the SL7 Etap mostly because of the gearing. I am setting it up with a 46/33 crank and 10-36 cassette. Coming from a 50/34 and 11/34 I actually gain on both ends and especially on the climbing end. Since this is a birthday present for my 70th I am gonna be needing all the climbing help I can get!

I bought a size 56 SL5 in Quicksilver. The last one in the UK until November. It looks even better than photos. Heavy? Compared to my E5 Diverge, no. Also more comfortable and quicker. Swapped out saddle, instant comfort improvement. Then I swapped in my “road wheels” from the divvie. Budget alloy rimmed 40mm Fulcrum 400s with 28mm Conti GP4000s - Even more comfortable and quicker. Plus it looks the absolute BUSINESS. Weenies gonna hate? Not my problem, I’ll be too busy riding my bike. Thanks for the vids, love your content and style!

How tall are you? Just ordered a 56 I’m 180cm. Went off the size guide and at no point would any chart fit me on a 54. Yet see a few people going on saying 54 is better and the seat mast on the 56 is too large? Coming off a large enduro mtb so I’m hoping I’ll be alright on the 56 as none left in the uk!

@@davidpage3636 I've been fine on my 56 tbf. Not got the saddle all the way down, probably at the end of my reach on 100mm stem though so gonna try a 90mm just to bring my bars a bit closer at some point. I think with a 54 I would have had to mess about getting a longer seat post an stem to make it fit rather than just the stem on the 56! I enjoyed your video. You always manage to hit all of the points other people miss. I currently own the 2015 Madone you pictured (so you’re correct), and I was amazed to see how that bike and the current 2021 Emonda are similar shaped. I’ve been riding a Giant TCR since 2017 and I haven’t gone back to Trek. #1 reason- Trek replacement parts are too damn expensive. Both brands are great, but I need more persuasive improvements in order for me to return to Trek. Perhaps then I will ignore the pricey parts. Keep the videos coming....

Very nice review. Best graphics I’ve ever seen. Going from rim brakes to disc is going to be expensive. I have gone down the long road of buying a complete bike to upgrades to new frame sets and going over to disc would just start that whole process again which I don’t think I want to go down that path. If your new to cycling then yes buy the best frame set with the cheapest components. You can always upgrade later and move those components over time.

@@chrisgilligan4968 For me the mayor draw of carbon wheels on a pure climbing bike are the aesthetics. No unsightly aluminum breaking strip. With discs you don't have those, and there light shallow section aluminum wheels for relatively cheap. Kind of misses the purpose of carbon anyways.

The Trek is way too heavy in the “affordable” pricerange. It does look nice tho! I think I would go for the giant TCR advanced pro series; good wheels, a powermeter included and a light frame. I just purchased the emonda sl6 with full Ultegra for $3299 and a weight of around 17.5 lbs. To me for the price, it is light. If i decide to upgrade the wheels, i will drop another pound on the bike. I thought it was a great deal. Plus you gotta look at even though it might be a little heavier than the competitors and a little more expensive, it has way better aerodynamics compared to those jabrone bikes. The TCR looks like a kids toy compared to the emonda
@robertnoltefavorite
@robertnoltefavorite 4 жыл бұрын
“Aero” is just another marketing thing... ofcource it does help in the overall speed and look of the bike, but the most important aero influence is the way you sit on the bike! The couple of watts saved by the frame is nothing compared to the rider. The bike on which you sit the deepest in the most comfortable way will be the most “aero”! I do like the way aero bikes look and we all know how cycling is all about appearance 😉.

I'm not going to chime in on all the weight/not aero discussion, just give my observations on the slr7 I have been putting kilometers on. The bike feels super. Stiff, responsive. The carbon eats the lumps and bumps of the road. Accelerates just by thinking about it. Still not sold on the Sram Etap. It seems a bit squirrelly....that is to say, I am constantly readjusting the front derailleur. I style myself as a climber/solo break type of rider, and it really suits me. Just my thoughts.

Last week I drove a couple hours to a shop that had the 105 equipped model in my size, my daily ride (80's vintage Trek Reynolds 531 bike, probably older than many of your viewers) in the car for side by side comparison. Checkbook in hand, I went in hoping to really like the Emonda after all I'd read. Weight didn't feel that different, I learned after the fact there was only about a kilo difference new versus my ride. Ride of the Emonda would probably have been less buzzy had they set up the wheels tubeless and lower pressure than 28s with tubes pumped to 100 psi. Braking and shifting were better than the old stuff I was riding, although after many years on the same bike I seldom miss shifts with the downtube friction shifters. Other than the fact the cockpit wasn't my preference for reach and drop, there wasn't a hill of beans difference in acceleration, cruise, or turning between old and new. I don't think I'd climb the punchy hills in my area any faster on the new bike. Maybe I'd take the descents faster with the better brakes allowing later braking on the turns, maybe not. I left without the new bike, still keeping an eye out for something a step function better than what I have at less than used car prices.

Thanks for the comment Kenneth - agree with a lot of what you say....what I would say is checkout the video NorCal made where they compare a high spec Tarmac against a low spec tarmac, there is a large speed difference between the two. Without testing the way they did you might not notice judging by feel.....of course depending how close you are to a Pro rider determines how large you perceive the difference to be - even a fraction of a second would interest a pro. So, its all relative I guess.....

Did consider the scaled back version of this Trek but went with the TCR Advanced Pro 1 - think it’s a better bike and has far more about it that the likes of Canyon which are dull and never catch attention. The new Tarmac looks lush but being a bigger rider I didn’t want dropped seat stays. My current previous generation Tarmac just vibrates too much and is a harsh ride. Can’t wait for disc brakes. Also, think the TCR, for the money and quality of the frame and wheels and added duel power meter, I think it could well be Bike of the Year.

Mr Zazovia it’s a turn of phrase really, but the weight to stiffness ratio is higher than any bike at that price range (and higher than the 2019 Tarmac S Works, for example), better wheels than the Tarmac, twin power meters for same as the Tarmac, looks far nicer (IMO) than the Trek, which, along with the Specialized Tarmac for 2021 have a colour scheme that would get boring or you just wouldn’t want. I think the cable routing on the £4K+ Tarmac is neater, but is similar to the TCR for the £3.5k price bike. As I’m a heavier rider I don’t like the dropped rear stays after a number of incidents with down tubes breaking under force. I’m 117kg, so that is important to me. See, a different level ;-)

Mr Zazovia yes, there certainly are... and at these prices you need to get it right. Of course, I’m not saying I’m right, but since ordering (December delivery) Bike Radar have done a few reviews with David Arthur and he seems to rate it.

I went with the SL 7 eTap, mainly because I wanted to try eTap, and it comes with a power meter at that price, which is pretty good. The weight difference between the SL and the SLR doesn't amtter to me.

@@harrydelaney6623 The SL 7 never showed up, and it didn't look like it would be coming any time soon, so I ordered a Project One SLR 7, which arrived in November '20. I like it a lot - I really like the eTap, and the built-in power meter is nice to have. I changed the headset from the one-piece to a standard bar so I could have more adjustability. I only have 3,000 miles on it yet, but so far it's all good.

that's the problem! Hard to chose between those 2, both great bikes - at least that makes it hard to get wrong! Check the weights though, the cheaper Emonda's are heavy

Hey:) i want to buy a new bike and am kinda between the trek domane sl5 2021 and a ultimate or endurace from canyon for around the same price or lower with also 105. No clue what would be the best long term buy. The bike is meant for flat roads here in the netherlands. But a short bike packing adventure would be a plus if possible. Thanks:)

If a top end aero bike is over 7.3kg it is too aero and too heavy. When i watched the GCN pro bike weight I was amazed how heavy pro bikes were so heavy( some close to 8kg) which doesn’t make sense considering you are going hardest on the hills so that’s when you want the advantage right?

Sean Chin Yes Sean. As crazy as that sounds, frame (52 cm) originates in Asia making its way to Wisconsin for paint and final assembly. Trek’s ordering system gave the dealer and me a promised ship date of 9/28. Covid19 obviously impacted bringing the bikes to market. Larger frames are 30-45 days.

Canyon's pricing is different from others. They mail the bike to you, and take out the middlemen. A little worrysome if you have to spend thousands on a product which you haven't had access to, and believe for warranty, you have to pack and send back.
