This is the USS Enterprise-G! The latest starship to join the Enterprise namesake in the Star Trek Universe. But what do we know about this ship? We've got you covered if you want technical details and background information. But you might not know that the Enterprise-G was ANOTHER Starship before it became what it is today. Originally launched as the USS Titan-A, the ship would be rechristened as the Enterprise-G in 2402.
In this video, we’ll also touch on the idea that renaming the Titan-A to the Enterprise-G is not exactly the best move.

The power creep was getting a little bit too insane, and the Enterprise wasn't always the strongest ship in Star Fleet. The ToS era had Star Fleet battleships guarding the Federation that were stronger than the Connie Heavy Cruisers. They just were not sent out on five year missions to explore like the Connies were. It also meant that the enemy factions had to produce a ship capable of countering the Enterprise, IE the Romulan Semitar.

@DrewLSsix
@DrewLSsix Ай бұрын
Always? OK, so the og Connie was top of the line when new, but was 40 years old by the end of the films, the Enterprise A therefore was well outclassed by even mid class ships like the Reliant class. Then theres the B, which was an Excelsior, but that class was a decade old by the time the B came along. The C was by most accounts a failure of a class, we see basically no Ambassadors at any point in the fleet, even though the 80+ year old Excelsior is still serving as admiralty flag ships. The D was great but was also a class of ship that was almost immediately shown to be inadequate for the job, the class did grow and endure for at least a decade, but we're quickly supplanted by better designs. The D herself only lasted 7 years before being taken down by a single century old BOP. The E, well the E is without fault and shouldn't be dragged into some petty internet squabble. The F is another short lived ship that had to be retired early.
@DrewLSsix
@DrewLSsix Ай бұрын
@Daginni1 the TOS era literally only had the Connie, you can dip into non canon stuff if you like but don't expect it to hold any weight. Besides, one of the toxic Fandoms favorite geipes is things like the Discovery being a larger ship than the Enterprise, even though there's absolutely no hard canon pointing to the Connie being the largest ship in the fleet.
@brentbartley6838
@brentbartley6838 Ай бұрын
@@DrewLSsix Connie's were the complete package in their day. If you want to count some non canon sources then the Dreadnought could outgun a Connie but it's not like the Connie becomes bottom tier. It was still top 2 or 3 for Starfleet in ToS. Excelsiors were the top of the line for better part of a century only first outclassed by the Ambassadors though Ambassadors never replaced the Excelsiors. Then D, E and F were the top of the line ships when each class rolled out though the Borg and Dominion caused rapid power creep and there were likely equally or slightly more powerful ships in between the rollouts of the Galaxy, Sovereign and Odyssey classes. And the Enterprises obviously weren't always The flagship as there were long gaps without an Enterprise in service between NX to Connie, B to C and C to D.

Because Kurtzman made the mistake of hamstringing the Federation by destroying Utopia Planitia, another one of the stupidest decisions in recent Trek. And because of that, Starfleet's corp of engineers struggles suppposedly to build new ships, hence why we wound up with the Neo Connie and the god aweful copy-paste ship... The Andromeda-class, like the previous Galaxy-to-Nebula pair, is the Galaxy-equivalent to the Sutherland-class, which we saw clearly in spacedock and in the fleet in Season 3. 2 ship-classes for the cost of essentially one production line since they share 85% of the same spaceframe and hardware. The Enterprise-G ruined both the Enterprise legacy and the Titan legacy. When the director for Picard leaked the picture of the Odyssey-class, everyone thought that was going to be the next Enterprise. Unfortunately, it was only shown on screen briefly as it was going to be decommissioned. Then we find out the Titan-A was just a reconstruction of the damaged Titan and reconfigured into a completely different ship. Then that became the Enterprise-G. After the public voiced their distaste to how the Enterprise-G came about, the producer then posted in twitter/x that "maybe he should have never used the Odyssey at all."

I would have refitted the Odyssey Class into a YorkTown Class, I would have kept the Enterprise F, The first Defiant of the Defiant Class got infected with a computer virus the federation was able to recover the vessel by purging their computers and reinstalling software. If they can fix the Defiant why can’t they fix the Enterprise F.

They could make that scene like that: Picard, Beverly and Jack are flying thowards Titan-A, Picard thinks Titan-A is where Jack is stationed, but Jack says "Not quite." As a fan of Star Trek Online, I strongly believe that renaming the Titan to Enterprise-anything was a bad idea. Rename it to Picard, keep it as Titan-A, anything but Enterprise. Rechristened Enterprises need to earn that title, and the Enterprise-G didn't. I was hoping to see a repaired USS Enterprise-F, perhaps in the Yorktown or even the Lexington refit variant, but no. It was the Titan that got renamed Enterprise. And they didn't even give the F a suitable tribute! They gave the Enterprise-B and Enterprise-C a full 30-minute episode, and hell, they even gave the Enterprise-J more respect and it appeared in ENT! With the Enterprise-F though, it was ten seconds on screen then off to the salvage yard to be turned into razor blades. In my opinion, the only reason the Titan was renamed Enterprise-G was solely for IRL reasons, specifically to rob those who own the USS Enterprise-F (its' designer and Star Trek Online's developers) of any sort of royalty checks for when their design became canon.

The Essex aircraft carriers from WW2 were also modified as far as their hull could manage, having their who flight decks replaced with angled ones, the hanger decks enlarged to accommodate jet aircraft, increasingly larger catapults and arresting gear for bigger and bigger planes (and all the equipment that runs those systems), and larger and newer elevators installed. They were still the same ships when they were retired.

I expected you to go into detail about how the Enterprise is supposed to be the “flag ship” representing the peak of power projection that body is capable of, in this case Starfleet. The Neo Constitution class or whatever its being called now demonstrated it can get its butt kicked. And run interferrence , thats it. Its never shown or even implied that this vessel is the “best” starfleet has to offer. If the D and E were battleships. The Titan A is at most a cruiser. If not a frigate or a destroyer.

@@JohnnyWednesday If you have read and watched a lot of analysis on the D. For all intents and purposes it was, and in many respects the reason the romulans developed the D’deradix. For an exploration vessel *air quotes* its ridiculously overshielded and incredibly well armed. Its literally the closest thing they HAVE to a battleship , therefore as far as all other powers are concerned “it is a battle ship” And this perception has even caused tensions with rival powers. Starfleet can pretend they arent a military all they want to. The enterprise D is totally a battleship despite its extra amenities and science departments and civilians on board. In fact its an extremely powerful ship simply based on that fact that they have civilians going on deep space exploratory missions into the unknown for gosh sakes. You can CALL it what you want. But it fits the classification of battleship. And if I were the Klingons the romulans and cardassians … and I saw one. Id say “Battleship” Because its perfectly able to fulfill that role and it DOES on many occasions. Every Enterprise has represented the “Battleship” of its respective era, sporting the hardest hitting weapons and best defensive systems starfleet can put into production. If you are talking about how canon starfleet calls them “Heavy Cruisers” well thats no different than how the democrats call AR15s assault weapons. You can call something whatever you want. But all relevant use cases , and compared to the rest of the fleet line up…its a battle ship. They just dont want to “call it that”

The -F and Titan got done dirty just so the producers could have their "Own" shiny Enterprise by the end of the Picard. The Enterprise-F was a beautiful design, and the Yorktown refit made it even better. But instead of leaving the Titan-A as the Titan, and leaving the -F to be around, no, the producers shoehorned in a reason to get rid of both so they could have their OWN Enterprise, like folks won't watch a show about a ship OTHER than the Enterprise.

Renaming the Titan-A to the Enterprise-G feels like the most obvious example of producers meddling in the plot I've seen in all of Trek. Like, the only people who would find the plot point fulfilling are people who have absolutely no idea about the larger naming conventions of ships, and are willing to walk in front of a moving train for a conventional plot device.

Instead of a Constitution 3 class they should have made it an *Excelsior 2* class, and had the quantum slipstream burst drive severely damaged in the first battle with the Strike, being hit with a heavy barrage of its own torpedoes/missiles going through a portal back at them. And knocking out a bunch of their own weapons as well (a few emiitters and all but one launcher), so that they are outgunned like the Constitution 3 was. Or just uppower the Shrike so it can even threaten a Excelsior 2. Thus when Picard Season 3 ends and they move on to Star Trek Legacy, they have a plot device for why the hero ship is far away from Starfleet and the Federation. Because a Constitution 3 is not a ship you send into unknown territory, but a Excelsior 2 with its quantum slipstream burst drive is a capable long range Explorer. The show format could even be the Titan-B (Legacy name from Rikers old destroyed ship...) does a 30 minute Quantum Burst to a new area, then has a bunch of episodes in that region of space. Then moves on after a while via another Quantum burst. It's doing Scouting of the unknown regions just beyond the knowledge of the Federation. And if the plot ever requires them returning to Federation space a few Quantum Burst in a row with cool down time gets them back to 'civilisation'. The quantum slipstream drive as a short Burst is a great plot device.

It was a terrible move imo. Enterprise has a history of being at the forefront of Federation tech; and fhis is not. It diminishes the Titan’s legacy and calls it lesser than the Enterprise’s; which I think would be more fine if we didn’t know the Titan’s history but it to me says Riker was less of a captain than Picard. The ship is ugly but aesthetics are subjective. I don’t understand why “necks” are back in style after the E-D and E-A exposed necks as a huge weakness in battle. Most ships released after Galaxy classes afaik have no necks? Sovereign, Intrepid, Defiant, Prometheus… the list goes on

It being the same *type* of ship as the Titan I would have been fine with. I know people love the bigger, flashier ships but if you think about Starfleet's situation by the end of Picard s3 it makes complete sense that Starfleet would be going through a bit of a resource conservative era because of both the aftermath of the two major wars, the loss of the Fleet Yards above Mars, and now the destruction or at best, heavy damage to their main fleet. They're in a state of recuperation, so smaller, more efficient, less resource heavy ships for at least a gen makes sense to me. The Titan-A itself was built using many of the reused and refitted parts of the Riker's Titan specifically for the above reason. It also represents a thematic return to form for Starfleet, where they have to rely on their scientific, diplomatic, and resourceful chops as opposed to just having the biggest and bestest guns available which they had to do for the war. I do have an issue with it specifically being the Titan-A that they rename Enterprise, because obviously by this point you'd think the Titan name would have its own legacy and that this would add to it, rather than be "upgraded" to an Enterprise (I have the same issue with the theory about the Yorktown being "upgraded" to the Enterprise A but eh, unlike the Titan A the Yorktown didn't save the Earth lol). If they REALLY wanted Seven to command an Enterprise I still think they could have gotten the same emotional impact from Shaw sponsoring her Captainship if she just simply got a new ship but of the same type.

It was named the Titan-A because, like the rest of new Trek in the Abrams universe, no one watched any of the previous series to understand that the Titan was a Luna class and not a Constitution-something class. At least Lower Decks gets it right. Naming it the Enterprise G also doesn't really keep with the naming traditions of Starfleet. Not the least of which is that the Enterprise E never got a send off and the F was barely 10 years old at this point and they want to write it off? The Enterprise is always a flagship, not a leftover hand-me-down of miscellaneous parts from other ships.

So agreeing with others; they did the Titan dirty, they did the -F dirty, and they did the -E dirty. I'm still convinced that the fate of the Enterprise-E is going to be a stupid running joke within trekdom, a "LOL Worf did it" joke that we never see any resolution for. This ship is no where near a flagship type of starship, especially after the B, C, D, E, and F. This was a significant downgrade for ships named Enterprise. I can even go into a whole paragraph on how it was disrespectful to the lineage of the Titan name. I would rather they decided to refit the D into the something similar to the ship we see in Journey's End, which would have been a better love letter ending for TNG. That said we are all being nit picky and Picard was an incredible mini series!!!

Going for bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger ships is a trap that eventually leads to idiotic design decisions. The Enterprise F is an uninspired hulk of a ship that is all tappers and sharp points and chrome. While I have some similar design issues with the G (it’s very Kurtzman Trek) the idea of the Enterprise being a scrappy little ship that relies on speed and versatility rather than overwhelming power is a fun one! The constitution class is the most iconic in all of Star Trek. Continuing that design heritage really works for the average viewer. When my dad first saw the Titan he immediately said “the enterprise!” That’s good stuff.
