The finer details are what makes DS9 so good. Even Vic Fontaine was done well. All the minor characters we so well written and acted. Frikkin Rom steals every scene. Dukat, Zek, Garak, Weyoun. Probably the least cared for character is Ziyal. Or Alexander lol. Nurse Ratched for Kai Winn...Come On, best pure Villain ever. Avery Brooks had all that talent to work with and still managed to act circles around them a lot of the time. I think a big difference between him and Picard, is that Picard had many Speeches, and Sisko had many reactionary statements. One of my favorites was after the following: Gem Hadar gives speech. "I am First Omet'Iklan. And I am dead. As of this moment we are all dead. We go into battle to reclaim our lives. This we do gladly, for we are Gem Hadar. Remember, Victory is life.". something like that. O'Brien mocking the Gem Hadar says "I am Chief Miles Edward O'Brien. I'm very much Alive and I intend to stay that way!" Sisko Quips "Amen. lets get it Done!" his tone and timing was quite humorous to me

DS9 sucked. It is so overrated. The stories were stupid. Every episode focused on Quark felt like an episode of Scooby Doo with Quark's schemes being "foiled by those meddling kids" (I mean Odo.) And every other episode felt like the Love Boat set in space. The acting was terrible. Sisko was a baby always whining about his wife. Unless he was yelling at Captain Picard. Let me repeat that...Sisko was yelling at CAPTAIN PICARD! And this was TNG Picard, not the shell of a Picard in "Picard." TNG Picard should have demoted Sisko and sent him home for being a wuss. Dr. Bashir was the WORST Star Trek doctor. Desperation set in when they were forced to bring in the Defiant because who wants to watch a Star TREK series where they literally are trekking NOWHERE! All DS9 is a casino and truck stop in space parked next to a wormhole. I have watched every Star Trek episode (except TAS) and every movie. DS9 was HORRIBLE! 1. TNG 2. TOS 3. Enterprise (especially season 3 and 4) 4. Voyager 5. Picard or Discovery (they both sucked) 6. DS9. Actually it shouldn't even be on the list since Sisko never even attempted to fulfill the Federation's mission "to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly GO where no one has gone before." They literally parked a space station and made a series about visitors. Terrible series. Just awful!

I think what makes the destruction of the USS Odyssey so shocking is that Star Trek never had a enemy like that. The USS Odyssey was in full retreat and it was destroyed by a suicide attack, it was the first time in Star Trek that Star Fleet faced a enemy that would kill themselves to take out a enemy, even if that enemy was defeated. It was the first time Star Fleet faced religious extremists.

"Had James T. Kirk been at the Battle of 359" is an interesting idea. Locutus may know Starfleet strategy and tactics, Jim Kirk is noted as able to think out of the box and he never believed in a no win scenario. Riker himself can outthink Locutus which was seen given how his unpredictable manuevers allowed Shelby & her team to abduct him from the Collective.
@Eagle8599
@Eagle8599 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest failing at Wolf 359 was that no one realized that Picard/Locutus was so intimately familiar with Starfleet protocols and tactics that his knowledge of them told the Borg how to defeat them. Ruler/Shelby were aware of this and used "brilliantly unorthodox tactics" to not directly attack the cube and go around the main defenses.
@dinomonzon7493
@dinomonzon7493 3 жыл бұрын
Eagle8599 Oddly, the Borg never assimilated Picard's knowledge in First Contact; Adm. Hayes' fleet at the Typhon Sector damaged the Cube. A big contradiction was the fact that in First Contact, Adm. Hayes refused to allow the Enterprise to join the battle. Yet in the episode Descent, Adm. Nechayev gives Picard command of a 3 ship taskforce: Enterprise, Agammemnon, and Crazy Horse.
@corvusdove874
@corvusdove874 3 жыл бұрын
It sort of depends on the "had he been there' details. If he'd been there in 1701-A or B (or god forbid, the original ship) the sheer outclassing would have necessitated his classic "time to blow up the Enterprise" method. If he'd been elderly admiralty (and not buried on Viridian III after a hero's death) and still in active service, I think he'd probably have feinted the fleet to attempt to draw the Borg into a more favorable course, failed because Borg are Borg, and ended up with the fleet pursuing the Cube (too late) from Wolf 359 all the way to Sol.
@Eagle8599
@Eagle8599 3 жыл бұрын
@@dinomonzon7493 in ST:FC, it was stated early on that Starfleet had every confidence in the crew of the Enterprise but not her Captain. That shows that Adm. Hayes was worried that Picard would be emotionally compromised and not be performing at his peak or may possibly be influenced by the Borg. At Wolf 359 however, the Borg were, in a sense, being led and instructed by Picard because of his intimate knowledge of Federation tactics and command personnel. Thus, they were easily able to defeat the fleet and continue on to Earth with the commander of , arguably, Starfleet's most advanced ship (the flagship of Starfleet) providing key intel. Once they had that knowledge and experience, they no longer were so dependent on Locutus and we're willing to proceed to Sector 001 without him. When Adm. Nechayev gave him command of the taskforce, it is because she understands what type of person he was and how good he was at doing his job. Also, the most important thing to remember is that the writers of First Contact were using it as a way to create drama for the movie. This fact was proven in the movie when the Enterprise crew and other ships at the battle knew that Picard was singularly the BEST person to have lead the defense of Earth. This can also be attested to by how easily he was able to display the Borg cube once he took command.
@Eagle8599
@Eagle8599 3 жыл бұрын
@@corvusdove874 I agree. A Constitution class starship is easily outmatched by a Runabout in the time of the Enterprise-D/E. If Kirk was able to be in command of the 1701-D, he would have the same chance as any other Captain at that time. The crew of the "D" that we all know we're the only reason that Picard was able to defeat the Borg in "Best of Both Worlds". No one else could have used the " brilliantly unorthodox tactics" that they knew were needed to abduct Locutus. No one else could have interfaced with Picard as Data did because he is uniquely able to do so being the only android in Starfleet. They have the intimate working knowledge of the Borg because of their first hand contact prior to Wolf 359. Once again, the writers needed a source of drama other than surveying the Romulan Neutral Zone.

I’ve never quite bought into equating the Odyssey with the E-D. I can’t remember if it’s canon or not, but Koegh was said to go through (to fire) first officers quickly and be a jerk. A little similar to Jellico, I guess. You could say that the crew of the Odyssey was not as good as the E-D and also that the captain’s leadership resulted in the Odyssey not being as ready for battle as the Enterprise D. The Odyssey did well in survivability without shields, and kept giving O'Brien enough time to get Sisko before they retreated while also being attacked by 3 Jem'Hadar attack ships with 2 runabouts, if it wasnt for the kamikaze run the ship would have survived if the warp nacelle had been brought back online for them to go to warp. It is a shame, using a galaxy class to rescue 1 commander, thankfully Keogh evacuated all civilians and non-essential personnel before venturing into the gamma quadrant, and transfering shield power to weapons was a good call, it is a shame however that they didnt use alot more arrays to fight the Jem'Hadar instead of utilising just the 1, it survived but gave a rubbish fight, no torpedoes were spared at all. I had to laugh sorry to say at how quickly the smug smile went off of Sisko's face when he gave the order to open fire on the enemy and then moment later that smile his gone when the breen weapon starts draining the Defiant of power, over confidence in any situation can be dangerous and the Starfleet alliance forces underestimated the Dominion's new allies, but then this lead them to being able to make sure that technology was in place to protect any future battles from the Breen dampening weapon. (I am not hating on Sisko, I am just stating an observation)
@frag2k12
@frag2k12 3 жыл бұрын
I believe but am not 100% that all weapon power can be transfered to a single weapon array, since the phasers are known to be able to fire at different power levels putting all the power into a single beam makes sense when trying to knock down their shields. Also if as you said the shield was down which would put using torps as a VERY bad idea, its stated in canon that a Mk 16 torp will destroy both the firing ship and what it hits at the short range engagement levels, this puts the explosive up to 40,000km blast radius though most likely half that.

The loss of the Odyssey is used by some to suggest the Galaxy class was weak and flawed. (Trekyards for example..showing they know nothing). These folk forget that the Odyssey encountered an enemy with weapons that cut right through their shields (it is mentioned in on screen dialogue) and still held their own. It was only the Kamikaze run that destroyed her. No ship could take that sort of damage right next to it's wearp core and survive.

For me the most terrifying part of the Dominion war is that it took a coalition of all the Alpha and Beta quadrant powers simply to neutralise those Dominion forces that had come through the wormhole. The fact that the Dominion were still in the process of fortifying Cardassian territory and were not at "full strength" when the war began. Had the wormhole not been mined, or the reinforcements came in later from the Gamma quadrant then obviously the Dominion would have conquered everything, their only possible thing standing between them and complete and total domination of the entire galaxy would have been the Borg.

I'm old enough to remember every critical and fan complaint about DS9 back in the '90s because 1) I was 16 when the show premiered, 2) it quickly took me from being a Trekkie to a Trekker, and 3) I've defended its great storytelling for over 25 years now. With that said, I can say without hyperbole every complaint folks are making about Disco is virtually the same as the complaints people made about DS9 back in '93. The similarities are so exact, I'm beginning to wonder if 20-25 years from now, there will be another group of people online praising the fearlessness and ingenuity of Discovery, while whining and complaining about another Star Trek series being "too dark" and "lacking optimism."

Strafleets biggest lost is great story telling about an optimistic future.. Starfleets worst threads are JJ Abrams and Alex Kurtzman

The only Starfleet loss on the list is the Xindi attack witch predates the federation. Everything else is federation planets and resources, Starfleet is earth's own space-related things.
