I can't give the writers enough props for the writing on this show - it really is rock solid. And the finale that they're setting up for? Man, THAT'S going to be a real trip to watch if they can live up to even half the potential of it. And this really does provide a solid template for the other serialized Trek series to follow going forward - each episode of Prodigy stands on its own, but watching it in sequence really shows how much care has gone into the writing and acting of this show.

Prodigy has become my favorite new Trek series and is in the running as my favorite Trek show ever (and I grew up in the time of TNG+DS9+Voyager+ENT). I was initially skeptical about both new animated Trek shows, and both of them quickly dispelled any concerns I had.

@@mwhalli, I don't think she connected their guest with the diviner. She is on her own ship and is going to meet with someone who is already with another Starfleet officer. I don't think she thinks he's a threat (yet) or realizes that she is going to be in a dangerous situation. She expects there to be another officer there with her who could assist if things turned violent, which, again, is highly unlikely given the state she knows their guest was in.

I will note, Janeway seemed a bit more on her game up until The Diviner decided she needed a nap, and I think that's due to her choice in beverage. You don't usually see her drinking tea out of a mug like that, that is a coffee mug, she finally said "Screw the doctor, I need coffee for this mess". What's that? Am I blaming TEA for Janeway being a little off? Yes. Yes I am.

Thanks for having as much enthusiasm and enjoyment for this episode as I have, Sean! I think this/these backstories came at just the right point in the season. We had the chance to get to know and really like the main characters as they are "now" while having the, yes I'll call it, suspense of knowing how they came to be who they are. We liked the characters before. Now we have real and deep reason to respect them. Btw, I predicted your platinum up would be for Pog. That was a great backstory with so much more underlying his character to probably be revealed in the future. I am so enjoying this series. Funny, my great niece, 13, doesn't get into it at all while I, 58, am totally enraptured with it! Ascensia is also like her prodigy and she respects Ascensia's capabilities a lot. She knows Ascensia has been trying to help their guest recover and he was in a very bad state the last time Janeway saw him. She has questions for him about the Diviner, but I'm still certain Janeway hasn't linked their guest with the Diviner (based on her request to security just before she entered the quarters) and it is highly unlikely she viewed the situation as dangerous since she would be there with a smart and capable junior officer.

I really liked this episode, was good to finally get backstories for everyone, and we finally get an answer as to why Jankom refers to himself in the third person. I was starting to wonder how many Drednoks there were. If it's a prometheus class ship that makes first contact with Solum, then Admiral Janeway might be able to stop it, assuming she gets the chance. As for Asencia not locking her door, well, she likely had no idea anyone was coming and was probably off duty so had no reason to suspect anyone would come looking for her. As for chekotay being stuck in the future, that certainly presents a problem, considering the last two episodes of thse season are called "Supernova", which i highly doubt is a reference to Hobus system.

1 - Chopin; Usually when citing a musical work you say the composer's name, the title of the work, then the mvt # or type of piece it is, followed by the key of the piece. This is done so people don't get confused by how many Preludes someone writes for example. I wished the writers would've consulted Nami Melumad, Michael Giacchino, or a musical consultant to get this small detail right for all the music people out here, but that's okay! The episode itself is called Preludes which gives a backstory of our characters. That's what a musical prelude is, it gives an intro to the piece someone is going to play or perform. I love seeing music in trek! 2- Janeway's chop; It's funny because Janeway herself used this chop on other people in episodes like Time and Again (S1E4), Resistance (S2E12), Bride of Chaotica (S5E12), and maybe a few more. It's funny now that it's come full circle.

I wonder if Asencia being discovered by Janeway was intentional. You're right, it does seem odd that she would be caught so easily, after hiding her identity for so long. This episode made the question of how old these kids are so much more difficult to answer. Do Jankom's years in stasis count for his age? Does Rok-Tahk's alone time count towards her age? If the Diviner got here 20 years ago, and worked to find the Protostar long enough to realise he might die first and should make a kid, how old is Gwyn? Is Zero actually a kid if they were on a Medusan science vessel and participating in landing parties? How the hell does age work for someone like Dal whose DNA is composited from species with very big differences in maturation age and lifespan?
@BlazeMiskulin
@BlazeMiskulin Жыл бұрын
I thought that this added a depth to the ST universe. In so many SF stories, the assumption is that all aliens mature on a similar timeline to Humans[1]. Years = level of maturity. This was sort of addressed with Kes on Voyager, but I don't think it's even been mentioned in other Trek. So it might be that Rak Tahk's race are much longer lived, and maturity comes much later than in Humans. It might be that Murph is only 2 years old (Earth reckoning), but is an adolescent. ========== [1] Okay... the editor in me is having an issue. All "alien" races are capitalized. Shouldn't that mean that "Human" should be capitalized?

Finally someone asking common sense questions. I have a lot of problems with the writing in this show and its internal logic. I know every rabid Star Trek fan is gonna attack me now but I'm not a hater...I grew up in the TNG era and love Trek. I watch everything objectively which is why I enjoy these reviews as they are not afraid to give downs as well as ups. I also grapple with how old each character is. I actually would have given this episode an up for showing us all the kids' backstories, but a down for lumping them all in the same episode instead of spreading them out. I understand how with this new format, there are technically less episodes per season to get the story told...they call this season 1 but come on...they split it into two definite sub-seasons with season finales. These are not hour long episodes like most other Trek shows or streaming shows that have 10 episodes per season so characterization is the first thing that suffers from the time crunch. I would have rather had their backstories sprinkled throughout, plus episodes that focused on specific characters. Another question I've always had is, why and how are they all orphans?!? It's pretty convenient that none of them happen to remember being separated from their real parents...all their stories start after the fact. And if the Diviner was trying to mine the asteroid to find the Protostar this entire time, why take trafficked children?!? It just seems more trouble than it's worth because they can't mine as well as the adults (unless they are insanely strong like Rok.)

Gwyn is a teenager (she was cloned after The Diviner traveled back in time). The Diviner is ~20 years older than "Ascensia." But the confusing bit is that The Diviner was there for First Contact, which was 50 years before the arrival of the Protostar. Look-I have no problem believing that Ascensia is 60-70 years old (the age of _ENT_ T'Pol), and that a 70yo on Solum looks only a little older than a 16yo (think: Klingons, where Aledander went from baby to full adult in, like, seven yeara), but it seems odd given those maturation cycles that the Vau N'Akat would have such an _abrupt senescence_ around Age 75.

CANON WATCH EXTRA: Still no explanation for why Jankom Pog looks more like a Tellaxian than a Tellarite. The fact that he's from before the Federation actually makes it even harder to reconcile with canon. More on this story as it develops. Back to you, Sean.

And this made me think of DS9, TNG, and VOY would be working on something tech on their respective ships, and would all of a sudden would be waiting for results or said repairs and then they would talk or deal with their said issues and have some heart to heart talk but then revert to tech talk when their results and the plot would resume.

Given that there are multiple Drednoks, something I am REALLY hoping will happen is that Gwyn will get a Drednok unit for herself. Wouldn't it be cool to have a Drednok unit among the main protagonists! They can also tie this in to Rok-Tahk's theme of people jumping to conclusions due to appearance, and maybe they can also have the kids try and teach it how to be it's own individual.

I could also see the Drednok that got on board the Protostar in Time Amok being repaired and possibly turned into a body for Holo Janeway as a contingency for if the Protostar has to be scuttled (and afford Holo Janeway the same freedom The Doctor received from the Mobile Emitter).

🤓Don't know if anyone already mentioned this, but I think the "eagle" crew member seen with Chakotay could be Prodigy's take on an Aurelian (even though they're supposed to have wings sticking out their backs in addition to hands.)

The guy who sold Rok Tahk to the Kaison looks like a blue version of Burglekutt from Willow. Perfect slimy character comparison.

Asencias reaction to knocking out Janeway was interesting. Like she had gained some genuine respect for the Admiral. I wonder if that's going to end up being significant down the line?

I like jankom pog’s line at leaving asking the drone to tell the others who saved them and it says state designation. And he gets flabbergasted. I would too. You have me fix the whole d@mn ship, including the toilet, and you can’t even remember my bloody name!!!!

Technically, Shaun has to take back all those downs for Janeway. He said unless he starts seeing her start acting like she should. He'd take those downs away and she did start to realize that the kids weren't the bad guys here.

You forgot to add a Cetacean Observation for the birdlike alien, he's most likely an Aurelian, first seen in the original animated series in the episode where Spock goes back in time, I believe.

Love, love, love the show. But, I. Need. More! I love the premises they have, but i would love to have a full length episode rahther than simply 20 mins at the time. there is so much potential for us so called adult fans in this supposedly kiddy show. KUDOS for all invovled though! Love Janeway, both Admiral and Hologram along the rest of the characters/cast. 🖖
