In this video we’ll explain and demonstrate with videos some of the differences between a 2.97 First Gear vs a 2.66 First Gear.

There is a third iteration available popular for road race application with the close ratio (2.66 first with the OD 5 & 6 from the 2.97 box)

The Boss 302S came with the 2.66 first gear Tremec TR6060. It was the same trans used in the gt500. It was. Also equipped with a integeral oil pump.

I know you mustang guys love super low gears. I guess to compensate for lack of low end torque? lol J/k. But my 99' ss Camaro came factory with t-56 2.66 gear and after 150k I lost 3rd so i swapped in a t56 outta a 05' gto with the 2.97 gears. The 2.97 is definitely lower and tad lil better et's on the quarter mile but on the street just banging gears around town other then the smoother shifts at high rpms with the better triple coned Syncros. But overall I do miss the stock 2.66 geared t-56. It just seemed and felt more fun and sporty to drive. Loved how she pulled in 2nd I've ran (stock) 3.42s, 3.73s, and briefly 4.10s with the 2.66 trans on 26'' and 28'' tire's 3600lb car but only gained 3/10s of a sec average with 4.10s vs 3.42s. But it cut my mpg in half. I'm now running 3.73s with the 2.97 trans Does help with the drivability with a big 232/234 duration camshaft in traffic and it's definitely low geared but not as low as the 4.10s were with the old 2.66 trans. Just cruising around town and if i still ran the stock cam I probably could just skip 1st gear. Better yet I may convert to automatic next. I'm tired of listening to my wife bitch at me for spilling all my beer because the kids go to school smelling like Coors light all the time! lol

Went with the 2.97 for my gt350 so i swaped the rear gear to a 4.56 to help with roll racing

That’s very steep. What mph do you top off at in 4th gear? Isn’t traction a problem for you?

@CoyoteProductionsBoss302 I used tremecs web sight and at the gt350s red line 8250 it says I will be at 147mph in 4th with the 2.97 t56 and 4.56 rear gear.

⁠I used it and not sure if its correct. It said for my 2.97 and 3.73 rear + tire I would hit like 150 mph at 7500 rpm in 4th gear. I maxed at 124 mph at 7500 rpm.

Anotjer thing to consider... run the calculations with a 28" tire. Since i assume that's what your drag pack has. For me, when i make this magnum swap, i am going with 4.56 gears. When you do the heafs and cams, it will live mire gear. I would go with a 4.30 if you plan on hitting the strip often.

Yes the drag set up are 28”. I don’t plan on running the track a lot. I already have the 4.10 and I want a good highway gear too. Again I will see how the hp will work with the 3.73 and probably move to a 4.10.

@CoyoteProductionsBoss302 With the shorter street tire you are running, the 410s should feel good on the street/highway. I am just more of a drag race guy, that's why I am going that steep. When the car gets boosted I will step it back to a 410

I got the 2.97 Magnum (with a 4.10 final drive) and I wish I had gone with the 2.66. Top gear is a dud on the highway and pretty much unusable unless you're going well over 100mph.

Well doesn’t 3rd gear max at 100 mph and 4th ended at 124 mph with my 3.73 at 7500 rpm. Yeah you can hear the rpm drop but was hoping the 4.10 will help pick it back up.

What is your rpm at 80mph? What is your 6th gear ratio? I’ve seen these transmissions sold with even combo of the 2.66/2.97/.63/.50

@@shanebatten6473 ⁠6th gear ratio is 0.63 and rpm at 80 mph maybe around 22-2300. Tires are about 26.7” diameter
