It was the opposite of the other monster horror movies of its time. It takes place in broad daylight, in wide open spaces, the characters are smart (no 'everybody split up and search the haunted house alone' cliche), and the monsters adapt to the townspeople who also then adapt to the new monster behavior. It's great to see two smart and clever opponents try to outthink each other!

"Tremors" (1990): A B-movie that rose to A-movie level with a mix of hunor, action, and...romance!;) Also, Michael Gross' character, "Burt Gummer," rises above the "armed Prepper" stereotype to first class star of the series. Kevin Bacon made this movie during a low point in his career. Since then he has gone from "Yeah, I made this movie" to "Hell Yeah, I made this movie!";)

Every time I see Tremors the same memory immediately comes to mind... My aunt and uncle took me and my cousin to see this movie when we were kids, and when we got back we went into the basement and acted like if we touched the ground then we would get attacked by the creatures from the movie. So we spent most of the night climbing all over the shelves and cabinets trying to not touch the floor, until we got yelled at to go to bed because we were making too much noise! Lol Fun times indeed! : )

This movie is great in a lot of ways. They overdid the cheese so that would be funny The characters acted like real people would act. The monsters were done very well for the time period. There was real chemistry between the characters. A great movie.

@@jenmurrayxo There are a number of sequels to this movie. Usually led by Burt I believe. Whether you tackle them or not is up to you, I think most were direct to video type flicks. I always dislike movies where they create "high stakes" by characters being dumb and getting into the troubles. I enjoy when the situation is bad (there are monsters, no telephone connection, the resources are limited) but the characters are smart, they work with what they have and make the most of it.

An absolute joy of a film! You can tell that the writers (who originated the project) really put a lot of time and effort into developing the story and characters, so everything works seamlessly together. The film knows exactly what it is and what it’s doing, and plays with the formula while never relying too heavily on stereotypes. A great choice, Boston, and a great reaction too, Jen! All in all… Perfection!

This little gem of a movie has everything. Aside from the obvious humor, smart (and not so much smart) people, script, suspense. Every move they do makes sense, but to no avail. It also has great sound design and the best 'dirt' effects I have ever seen. So glad that your reactions were entertaining to watch, as they always are. Love a great ensemble of characters and seeing the way they interact in a crisis. Also, since the central conflict is between humans and beasts, Kevin Bacon's line, "This bastard ain't smarter than us," is perfect because that's what it comes down to in the conflict between humans and beasts: their advantages of being perfectly adapted to their environment versus our advantage of using our smarts to adapt. That line is a wonderful way of encapsulating the conflict.

One of the interesting things about this movie, is that it mimics some of the style of a lot of the sci-fi monster movies of the 1950's so well. It plops down the monster antagonist(s) needed, just kind of randomly, with no explanation as to where they came from. Most of the action takes place in daylight (lighting problems were more difficult to solve in the 1950's). There are no human monsters, no sadism, no real gore. You can let your kids watch it with no nightmares. And like many of the 1950's classics, you never take it too seriously. The girl who plays Rhonda is Finn Carter, who is the daughter of Hodding Carter, who was the Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs in the Carter administration.

Back in the early 90s, in elementary school during physical education class, our teacher had unfolded that huge round nylon tarp that looked like a giant umbrella! It was a silly game: All the kids (20+) are around the tarp, holding it. Then one kid steps in the middle and another one crawls under the tarp. Then all the kids must create "waves" while the kid in the middle must find and "capture" the kid under. I always found the name of the game a bit dark. "Très Mort", which means Very Dead. It took me a while to finally realize that it wasn't Très Mort but Tremors, pronounced with a very thick French Can accent! Suddenly everything made sense!

Great reaction, Jen! I knew you'd like this one. If you want some similar movies, check out some of these: * Critters (1986) about furry aliens that are mostly teeth which terrorize a small town. It's not high cinema, but you might enjoy it as a B-movie monster flick. * A better quality film would be Lake Placid (1999) about a giant aligator. The writing is sharp with lots of quick dialogue and the story isn't bad either. Betty White has a small role and she's hilarious. * Arachnophobia (1990) is a more realistic "monster" movie about a small town invaded by deadly spiders. * Gremlins (1984) features an adorable little fantasy creature called a Mogwai who makes an excellent pet, as long as you follow the rules. When his owner doesn't follow the rules, the town becomes infested with gremlins. The sequel is pretty good too, but it leans more toward comedy than horror. Only Lake Placid features a giant monster, but they all fit into the B-movie monster film category and have a feel similar to Tremors.

Also, if you haven't already, check out Jaws (1975). Tremors is basically Jaws on land.

Lake Placid is hilarious, and has a great cast. Betty White does steal the film with her foul-mouthed one-liners.

I've always liked this film because the characters act like real people caught up in terrifying circumstances. No going off alone or other stupidities like in most monster flicks. Just people acting intelligently to survive a nightmare situation.

Fun fact: this movie was originally called Dead Silence, and was written to be serious. It was changed to be a bit of a comedy very late in the filming as they played up the humor.

I remember watching the preview for the movie on a VHS rental (yeah, I'm not young) & was immediately interested in renting "Tremors" when it came. Became (and remains so) a favourite.

I love watching this movie as it makes laugh each time and jump as well. The first much better than the rest.

Really like how she’s doing not so run of the mill movies. I enjoy this movie and it’s definitely a low key movie.

"Kevin Bacon is going to do rock and then... it's over." Right after Kevin Bacon did rock and got his choice of weapon lol. There are 6 more of these and 13 episodes of a TV series too.

Tremors 1 & 2 are nearly perfect monster movies for me. I'm a die hard who has seen them all but I really feel people who liked 1 should watch 2.

I personally found Tremors 1 through 4 to be very enjoyable. The other 3 were okay or so I have heard. Ultimately most people apparently like the first two the best while not really liking the rest as much or so, as said earlier, I have heard. The 1st, 3rd, and 4th Tremors movies all take place or in the town of Perfection. There was also a short lived Tremors mini series that lasted for maybe 1 season or less than a full season. The second Tremors movie starts in perfection then moves to a location in Mexico. The final 3 movies take place in different locations. I don’t know how far you plan to go in the Tremors franchise Jen but i hope my info and that from others who have commented gives you some idea of what the rest of the Tremors franchise is like should you choose to react and review any other movies from the Tremors franchise.

Absolute classic, Tremors 2 by far my favorite in the series. to the point i have a friend, we speak only twice a year over the phone ( distance ), most of the time most of our convo's are just monty python and tremors quotes.
