Hi everyone! I've been working on this trendy crochet cardigan for a while now. I'm super happy with how it turned out! It could even pass as a store-bought cardigan! It uses the lemon peel stitch, but it can easily be swapped out with an easier stitch like the double crochet. It is very simple and cozy and I hope you enjoy this tutorial!
Materials:
Bernat Softee Cotton Yarn in "Seaside Blue": amzn.to/3RRJD8b
- Weight: Light (3)
- Fiber: 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic
- Approximate total length: 1270 yd / 1160 m
- Approximate total weight: 21 oz / 600 g
5.0 mm Clover Amour Crochet Hook: amzn.to/3noE9mz
Yarn Needle
Scissors
Project Level:
This project is pretty big, so it isn't ideal for an absolute beginner. I do go over every new stitch that we do, so it definitely is possible! Most of the stitches used are beginner level. We do, however, do some sewing to put the panels together! Another option would be to slip stitch the seams together instead!
Stitches:
Slip Knot (sk)
Chain (ch)
Double Crochet (dc)
Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)
Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Single crochet (sc)
Gauge:
9 lemon peels (18 sc+dc) - 16 rows = 4 in / 10 cm
Dimensions:
Sleeves - 19 cm/7.5" wide x 40 cm/15.5" long
Back Panel - 38 cm/15" long x 44 cm/17.5" wide
Front Panels - 38 cm/15" long x 19 cm/7.5" wide
Tips:
- Tighten your slip stitches to make the seam smaller and less visible
- The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a single crochet
- Pull your loose ends to the inside of the cardigan and weave them in (or leave them hanging!)

I am a serious beginner, like I’ve never crocheted before but this is really making me want to learn. My brain already hurts from trying to take everything in but this cardigan is so cute, I will definitely be mastering the stitches and coming back to try and make this. Edit to the replies under this comment: I’ve been crocheting for a year now and I’ve improved so much. Thank you for all the encouragement. I have yet to make this pattern, as I’ve been busy and getting constantly distracted by other patterns but I am determined to make it one day! I hope you all do well in crocheting too!

Fun fact: The lemon peel stitch is also known as a houndstooth stitch if you switch colours between rows! You can type it up and you can make a really nice sweater vest!

Hi! I usually don't leave any comments, but i just finished this cardigan after a few weeks of work, working on and off on the project, and i can say that it turned out so nice ! thanks a lot for the tutorial! I used a 4mm hook, which is a bit smaller than the one used for the tutorial. So, for those wondering, i think that you can just measure the piece that u're working on as u go with cm or inches, and it will turn out just as fine. I have larger shoulders, so I adapted my pattern, and the back panel is 56cm wide = 21 and 1/2 inch. Turned out perfect! Have fun crocheting everyone!

To stop the weird increase after a bit, try skipping the last one or two stiches instead of fully completing the round. It gives a more uniform shape. I started doing that after like the 5th or 6th round.

Okay so I’m 9 months pregnant and I haven’t been crocheting for a while since I’ve been mid semester as well as moving and being pregnant. Anyways, I miss crocheting but I’m not able to do it now as everything is still in boxes 🥲🤣 So lately I’ve been watching your videos before bed and on top of genuinely learning a lot, you also have such a soothing voice that it helps me get better sleep! I usually can only sleep an hour or two at a time but after one of your videos I can sleep the whole night. I hope that doesn’t seem offensive because I promise your videos aren’t like boring me to sleep or anything, they are so educational and helpful to me. Also I’ve never made clothes so it’s so interesting how they come together

I love this cardigan so much, I've made it twice now and it's just such a fantastic piece to add to the wardrobe. The instructions are super clear, it works up beautifully, and it looks so professional when it's finished. I made my first one in a berry piece over the summer and I've just finished a second one in more of a rusty orange. You always put out such articulate and easy to follow tutorials, Viv! I learned to crochet using your ribbed beanie video and have made a little over a half a dozen of those. Okay I plan on updating my progress/how long it takes me to crochet the cardigan if anyones interested Day 1: this day is starting in the evening I have gotten both cuffs done it took me awhile to figure out how to do them properly but none the less there done and look prettt good I will start on sleeves tomorrow Day 2: I’m starting early in the morning and just finished the 10th row on my first sleeve

I’m gonna go buy the yarn later to make this. I’m so excited!!!! Edit: I started on Sunday and finished on Saturday.. 6 days of very dedicated work lol. My cardigan turned out amazing though! I used two shades of pink for the cardigan and then made cherry decals to glue on top with fabric glue! It’s sooooo cute

Never heard of Lemon Peel stitch before , plan on trying it though I'm not a cardigan person more of a longer sweater type but have never made one. The patterns have always stopped me especially when it came to shaping the sleeves. I don't sew my pieces together, I use my crochet hook and weave them together, don't think it's a single crochet stitch, but you could use it if one wish. Anyway that's how I put my pieces together.

The start of sleeves, after the cuffs part, is a but uneven. It has more fluff on one side and less on the other or maybe that's normal and its just in my head.

I am confused..when you showed us how to do the lemon peel stitch you did the single crochet and the double crochet in separate stitches. But when you did it on the cardigan you did both if them in a single stitch, and then again the next into different ones. So should we continue doing them separately or in the same stitch?

Is the Sc & dc stitch into the same chain? Or is the sc in one stitch and a dc into the next stitch? Sorry I’m new to crochet so sometimes I need very specific instructions 😬

It’s in the same stitch only for the first round! The rest go into their separate stitches

I was thinking about doing a longer one, maybe in the middle of my thighs Do you think 7 skeins would be too much?? By the way, loved the video. The way that you explained the process helped me a lot to understand.
