Also Broken, let's please not forget about that one... i agree with you. It's sad, but its okay. I may never see Trent's show, but he can't miss his time with his family, and how a reasonable person is gonna argue against that? He's done more than enough for me and i can only be gratefull he exists and existed, we will always carry his music with us, and generation after generation he's gonna become immortal

I remember my freshman year in the first class, I was sitting behind one of the new students who had a walkman cranking "Wish." It blew me away and we talked about NIN for that first period. I've been a fan of the album Broken ever since. A few of my friends went further down the spiral with Trent as time marched on. I liked watching the MTV videos and a few of the catchy popular cuts. We used to jam the NIN albums while playing Wipeout and FZero. We still love The Crow and the soundtrack. Over the years my friends got into all that Trent put out including some amazing side projects. Trent is an amazing frontman and creative musician. I can still hear "Pinion" build adrenaline slowly cranking up to the intro to "Wish" and it thrills me now just as it ever did. Junior year I was in a bigger school and I was one of the new kids who met a cousin to the keyboardist, who gave out some free NIN stickers. I had that sticker on my gaming TV for over twenty years. A few of my friends have been to the live shows and were blown away by the vivid scene Trent makes. Thanks for everything NIN.

Sweet, warm memories of the old days! I don't want to sound like an old wreck, but that was the real deal! I just link it to two things. That we were young and everything was new. And the music was constantly changing and there was movement. New styles, new sonic techniques, new recording techniques, lots of different effects, just blowing your mind. And now it's all just kind of passive and melancholic. Like a sunset in warm weather. And let it all go... Just love Trent and his own way.

I reckon it’s always going to be up to the individual’ there may be what’s looked at as a smaller amount of people showing interest in certain genres of music but at the same time people are becoming more introverted because of being able to hide behind closed doors and listen to what the like on some many different platforms that do t alyws get accounted for as far as numbers of fans or listeners goes’ we are all still here’ we are just harder to find now’ and that’s because the concert scene isn’t the same as it used to be’ touring isn’t as important to promote records as it once was’ there are so many different factors that make up the reasons for all of this’ but that’s just me ✌️

Saw them last year for the first time at the Eden project in england. NIN doing a show in Europe is super rare after they released the Bad witch album so i had to take this opportunity, I canceled 2 of my favorite festivals to save money for the trip (i'm from the Netherlands) and i gotta say. I’d include Broken too as it’s kind of a trilogy; First a rageful and impotent cry against the external(Broken), then the rage and negativity being turned inward ,stripping layers away to a broken bitter end (TDS)and finally ( with the fragile) spiralling in the pit, confused and disjointed ,lamenting, hopeless and regretful. Tracks like Pinion/wish, Happiness in Slavery and Gave up off Broken are among his best

He will, I mean, back in 2009 he did the “Wave Goodbye” tour which was supposed to be NIN’s last tour… and after a hiatus of 4 or 5 years we ended up getting a new record, Hesitation Marks, side project with his wife HTDA, 3 NIN EPs, produced the Hasley record, several remixes of other artists, and multiple tours. The man isn’t done with NIN… he just needs a break from it again to fall back in love with it again.

There are many intersting artists nowdays , like echoes of something and it keeps going on…(I think about Y. Tumor for ex. or arca for more deeply sperimentation a little pop oriented…) let them play live and we’ll see what will happens. all of them are growing in this “music industry zeitgeist “ , bad or good as it appears to be.

As usual, Trent is letting his cynicism be his guide. No matter how right or wrong he is, he shouldn’t let it dictate his own work. Even if a lot of people aren’t paying attention, some people are. Without a doubt, Reznor changed my life. So I would want to ask him, how many lives would you need to change to make it worth it to you? 1 million? 10 million? Because from my perspective, even one life is gigantic. Trent has forgotten that. Some of us haven’t.

I hate saying it but Trent is right. Case in point, it's been three years since Ghosts V and VI. Back in the day, the wait for a NIN project would be far longer than 3 years. Not only does it feel undervalued but it feels like he's not getting the appreciation he deserves. He's also right about the film scores he and Atticus Ross are working on, it does feel like he can do stuff with scores that might not make sense with NIN. Personally, I like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo score he did. HBO's Watchmen was also solid

That's what I'm trying to focus on. I'm lucky enough to have seen them multiple times from the late 90s until their last show. It's still sad but you're right, he's created so much brilliant art and I'm trying to focus on that and not that I might not ever get the chance to listen to a new album for the first time or go to a NiN show that has an energy to it that I don't think any other band has ever been able to match for me. I'm wishing him all the best and I'm definitely happy for him. I'm still hoping for an album in the future though. That or maybe we'll get a real farewell tour at some point.

NIN is a great band/project, and I also feel like they are one of those bands that TOUR A LOT. Like, probably more than they need to. Not that I regret seeing them, but I often think of how it makes band members feel in the long run. Foo Fighters were one of those bands too, and Taylor Hawkins is a good example of tour exhaustion. I can relate to what Trent is saying about how music is not as sacred anymore. People will listen to it, but NOT live out the positive the messages in it. Making it only something cool to do. Just a commodity. That's my 2 cents anyway.

I just got into NIN a few months ago, I'd always been aware of the band and had seen the video for Only a lot on Fuse when I was a teen, but on a whim just went back and actually spent time diving into their full discography only recently. Through listening to more of his music and watching interviews and hearing his story about his struggles in his younger years Trent became my favorite musician pretty much overnight. I do hope I get the chance to see him on tour at some point, just being someone who missed out on the opportunity to do it earlier, but I'm glad he has that stability and happiness in his family life that he says makes him not as interested in touring.

No I get it. I have seen NIN 5 times as a teen and an adult from 2000 to 2016 or whatever and each time the crowd gets less into it. The 2000 Fragile show was nuts so was the 2005-6 tour, Lights in the Sky still had a moshpit and people going crazy and having fun! but when I saw them headline in the freaking rain at Day for Night people just stood there in the freezing rain. So me and my little brother who I promised a crazy NIN crowd was disappointed. We tried to start a pit and some people where into it. They said things like watch out for my girlfriends? Really. Nine in Nails and Trent where giving everything they got in the rain and people where just scared standing there. Then the festival security came and said we cannot have contact with any people. This is post 2016. So the Aphex Twin show had flags, dancing, and crowd surfing but a year later it was all cancelled. I get why he doesn't want to tour or make records. Playing his heart out to people on there phone. Fuck it.

While I understand much of what Trent said, while reflecting on the way that music in the current epoch is digested, I think that he's underestimating how fans of his music engage with it. Having followed NIN throughout their entire career, I've always taken extra time to get into the music, bought formats where variations/B-sides were available, chosen physical format over digital wherever possible, bought the experimental products such as Not The Actual Events & Add Violence physical components. I mention this, as I think I'm not alone in how I approach NIN releases. I'd predict that a good 80+% of the existing fan base share similar experience and sentiments. If this is the case, he should know that as far as HIS music is concerned, most of his fans will appreciate it the way that he'd like them to. By deciding to abstain from producing new NIN because of some negative perception of how people deal with his music, is a disservice to his fans, and a self-fulfilling prophecy to a certain extent. Bands generally don't continue indefinitely, at some point it is perfectly natural to hang up the boots and bow out. I'd always hoped that there would be one final NIN album that goes out with a blistering bang, it would just seem a fitting way to end.

Head out to pick it up at 12am on Tuesday morning at Tower records for their midnight release. Then that first listen on the way home and staying up late to devour the liner notes and lyrics as the tracks played. That's all gone now. Streaming and technology killed it.

Since Nine inch Nails was formed and got its start in Cleveland It was his special treat just for us ohioians and Clevelanders in particular. Though I live in Mansfield which is only an hour away I have plenty of roots and fond memories in Cleveland. So proud to say I'm from his neck of the woods! And while I have NO DOUBT he does not miss Cleveland nevertheless he strikes me as an extremely humble guy and never forgets where and what he came from. I'm sure he has at least a few fond memories of getting his start here, going by his previous interviews i know he also described NIN's success as "Escaping Cleveland!" Also something only ohioians and Clevelanders in particular could truly relate to. But it was a really incredibly feel good moment to have been there at a place that he deemed very special to himself and his band and he certainly expressed his appreciation for us that night!! What an incredible show that was!! Thank you Trent, Atticus and the entire NIN CREW!!! WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

This passage explores complex themes like redemption, self-reflection, societal expectations, consequences of choices, and resilience. Here are some key quotes and their meanings: 1. "Losing sight in shadows of raptured constellations, countdown to ignition, mushroom clouds signifying loss of innocence." - This quote suggests a disconnection from hope and purity, as well as the inevitability of change and the loss of innocence. 2. "Born to die with our eyes wide open, without mercy and no remorse." - This line conveys the harsh reality that everyone is ultimately bound to die, emphasizing our vulnerability and the unforgiving nature of the world. 3. "If all is forgiven to those who destroyed peace in the name of greed, will it justify the spoils, when you answer for crimes against humanity?" - The author questions the consequences of greed and the consequences individuals will face for contributing to human suffering. 4. "Were all puppets surviving on a string." - This line suggests that individuals often feel powerless and manipulated by forces beyond their control like societal norms or expectations. 5. "Mask of smiles hide heavens truth, singing parables of days gone by." - The quote highlights the idea that people often put on a facade to hide their true feelings or thoughts. 6. "Face to face with the chaos jumping on my chest, I'll find a way to make the sunshine again." - This line speaks to resilience in the face of adversity, hope, and determination. 7. "Now I'm trapped under the wall of shit I built, keeping faith another test of fate." - The author acknowledges the consequences of their own actions and the struggle to maintain faith in the face of hardship. 8. "The beauty of imaginations gift, when you've been used up, left to wonder, behind every corner is another day to betray chasing routine." - This quote emphasizes the power of imagination and the potential for new opportunities, even when circumstances are difficult and life feels static.

I respect his opinion on this matter. I have pretty much every halo ever released by him (I guess you could say I’m a pretty big fan) I do miss physical copies, reading the notes and lyrics, really absorbing the songs and taking my time with them. He’s made a ton of albums so even if he decides to take a hiatus, he’s made enough to satisfy new or old fans alike

I really liked the Ghosts project that NIN went on and I'm glad they "they" (I guess that's NIN's pronouns) did some more of that in 2020. My mom commented that the soundtrack work with Atticus Ross was just like more extensions of the Ghosts project. I remember the soundtrack to The Social Network and felt that it sounded like Ghosts and then the soundtrack to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo saw the duo grow from that and make stuff that sounded more involved. It was just something that worked for me. A little weird, surprisingly ambient and calm. A big 180 from NIN's usual sound. And Ghosts I-IV as well as The Slip were better albums than Year Zero and With Teeth for me.

What's funny is that way back in the 1990s I was not tuned in to NIN or anything done by Trent & Co. due to electronica, parties, little vittles, motivating, the rest... Trent created SO MUCH CREAM in all formats available to be heard and for all to then ponder, appreciate and gain from. Now in my same late 50s mindspace I can dare to catch up with all that is yet to be heard by me. Thanks Trent, Robin, all of ya! 🏆

But NiN fans don't feel that way about music and especially NiN's music. We're begging for an album. A physical copy that we can read along to the first time we break open that brand new pressing. I've been saved over and over by Trent's music. I understand why he feels this way and that he deserves to enjoy his family and the fruits of his amazing career. Still..... I am though one of the lucky ones that's seen NiN multiple times through the years. I was able to be at the last show, the reunion in Cleveland. I've witnessed the live shows of this generations greatest musical composer so i will be trying to focus on that and not the thought of going the rest of my life without the utter joy of new NiN albums and tours. N Thank you Trent. You've given us so much.

Rock Feed, Trent, other fans thereof, I do strive to go for "Full Album Friday's", elsewhere online. I will try remembering to put some NIN in the set then, other recommendations are accepted. Though, I'm still working and working on being more productive in my life. I don't have the time to sit back and listen, until late in the evening... let's go.

That Gone Girl ost was perfect for the film. My friends put me onto him years ago and I started listening to him again recently. I definitely get what he means about how people seem to treat music as disposable. Which could be a reflection of how streaming music has dominated the industry to the point where there's no real excitement for anything anymore.

He's not wrong about the music situation these days. Music used to hold a large part of the pop cultural zeitgeist, but now it is diluted with so many other things like video games, movies, social media, news and politics, viral cat videos, viral hate videos, crazy conspiracy memes, TV and streaming shows and movies and the list seems to go on and on! I remember when NIN first came out and hit the music world by storm! Music was a huge part of pop culture then and now it's not really much more than an occasional foot note in so far as mass media is concerned.

Reznor's first movie that I remember was "Natural Born Killers", it also comes to my mind that he did a soundtrack for one of the versions of the game "Doom". It's very likely that now any of these choices are much more lucrative and less demanding than the "Rock" shows.

Actually, it wasn’t Doom, but a very similar first person shooter game from the same company, called Quake. There’s even a NIN logo on the ammo box for the “nail gun” 🙂. He was slated to do the soundtrack for Doom 3, as well as original sound effects, but ended up not doing it for whatever reason. However, the few sound effects he did create before backing out ended up leaking online, if you do a bit of searching around you should be able to still find them. Sorry - I’m a NIN nerd, didn’t mean to go off on a tangent like that 😅

I see Broken/The downward spiral/ Fragile as kind of a trilogy in a fashion of Pink Floyds ‘The Wall’ ( or much much Darker side of the moon) First a rageful and impotent cry against the external by the protagonist, who is like Trent but not Trent,(Broken), then the rage and negativity being turned inward ,stripping layers away to a broken bitter end (TDS) and finally ( with the fragile) spiralling in the pit, angry, confused and disjointed ,lamenting, hopeless and regretful. The greatest rock albums of all time

Nothing is black and white. Lots of music these days is crap. But there are 6,000 songs uploaded to Spotify a day. There is tons of amazing ass music too. Now, I have always been an active listener. Music has always been extremely important to me. I’m still that way. Now, I have friends that used to, but now listen to music only while working or whatever. But, my 2 teenage daughters listen to music like I do/used to. ALL THE TIME and they read the lyrics and watch the videos and learn the lore/members. So far all the blanket statements I see in the comments, that’s YOUR experience. It’s not the objective truth.

I find it interesting that this response video has considerably more views than the actual interview. Is it because of the over two hour length of that video, or are fans just having trouble finding it? Rubin's is a great interviewer, and the last section of Trent's chat was where he "cryptically" (his description) talks about possible new projects. One was storytelling but not with an album or soundtrack. The other was possibly going to be inspired from his time at Apple, and basically challenging himself. The interview multiple times mentioned his children, artistic expression, and how hard it is to discover new music these days.. What are the odds that the once young "Mr. Self Destruct" who is now a doting , mature father creates new art especially made (and "family friendly") for young kids? Trent did do a soundtrack for Disney (Soul).
