In this video I've borrowed myself an Eb Bass - one of two tubas that we use in the Brass Band. This video is a bit of a ramble, but I finish it off with a little bit out of the Carnival of Venice.
I'm planning on recording some brass quintets when I get some time and a proper mouthpiece for my Tenor Cor (see my other videos). I've got about 10 or so pieces ready for me to record.

i first fell into tuba (well, at the time an Eb Sousaphone) many years ago, and after many occasional forays, am now back on Eb tuba. please do more on this wonderful, vital, but often neglected instrument (except for Brass Bands and the occasional orchestral player). the one i play, made by Conn, has had an "aftermarket" 4th valve added, increasing its lower range, but remains an extremely compact horn.

Yamaha YEB.. EEb has the 4th valve and they sound bauetifull especially when playing in top register for renaisance suite, I found boosey n hawkes Eb does well also. the low end on yamaha sounds good as well can almost match the BBb, EEb was my main instrument in home bands in regional Queensland where everyone else was Bb though I just read Bass clef no transposing except when played small Eb (boosey n Hawkes) transpose up the octave as music would get too low

Well.. not ANY Eb instrument. Trombones learn to read in concert pitch. And because trombone players first learn to play the Bb tenor trombones in concert pitch, the trick to Eb (alto) trombone is that it does better reading in F.

Clef. Cleft is the past tense of cleave, to cut something. As in cleft in twain, cut into two pieces. Clef is a register of a musical staff, as in bass clef or treble clef.

Actually, the Bb is technically BBb, then there is also CC. Those are the contrabasses. Bass consists of Eb, and F tubas. BBb are the biggest, and are student models. Eb are commonly more professional. CC and F are more obscure but they do exist. There also exists 4 or 5 BBBb subcontrabass tubas that are the size of a truck.

I know I'm late in the viewing, Trent, but a similar transposition hack for Horn in F is to play it in mezzosoprano clef and add one flat. That's what I did to play Mozart Horn Concerti on my tuba while at university back in the late 1970s. I started playing the E flat Bass back when I was 11 years old. When I transitioned to BB flat Bass it was on a Besson. I loved that horn. I still have a special fondness for my Conn E flat Bass, even though it was built in 1918 before A 440. I'm pretty sure that it's in A 432 or low pitch. I can't play it with any modern horns, so I just happily play solo with it.

I started learning the E flat......mainly because I wanted a very heavy blasting horn (like a 1930's ocean liner) sound especially for chords .I like the E flat because it is heavier sounding and lower than the euphonium and also B flat instruments cost so much more..I have a Yorkmaster silver plated tuba ( 1960's ??) and I recently bought a very tarnished R.S.williams and Sons Class B instrument ,(very old but not sure how old) ,made by Boosey for Canadian import...Unfortunately the mouthpiece for my Yorkmaster is too big for it and I think it takes a European shank mouthpiece .......

Tuba is a hard instrument to start off learning, although I don't necessarily approve of the 'heavy blasting horn' comment, I must admit that I have been known to utter the sentiment that excellence comes through volume.

no no what I mean is I compose music .... you can hear it on my youtube channel....It is done on synthesizer, but I want to add real tuba in (absolute must) and mutitrack notes through a reverb (echo) unit ... for example a low C chord an octave below middle C and that is what gives the low tuba notes this fog horn sound ...I love that sound....
@TrentHamilton

If you want a really good fog horn sound, get two euphos, have one play pedal Bb, and the other play C, a 9th higher.

@mal2ksc
@mal2ksc 8 жыл бұрын
+NostalgiaKarl A euphonium higher than an alto horn would effectively be a flugelhorn, but that's considered a completely different instrument and is held and played like a trumpet or mellophone. It's really rather amazing how quickly the 1/f scaling law makes low wind instruments large. Euphoniums certainly _look_ like they'd be more than an octave lower than flugelhorns, but they're not. Baritone saxophones look similarly huge compared to altos, although there is only an octave between them, and the reason is the same. It's not just the length that doubles, but also the width of the cone before the bell flare. Certainly the weight is much more than doubled.

I want to play VERY low notes but is the contrabass worth it? The contrabass doesn't seem to offer much more than those satisfying low notes. Is the Eb flat the tuba being used in concert bands or is it the contrabass (see Hal Leonard)? Which is better for a concert band player? I'm a woodwind player so this why everything is so strange to me.

It's interesting how music changes through out the world because where i live in Canada, and this goes for the rest of the Americas. It is called Tuba no matter what and the baritone and euphonium are not used professionally except for in concert/military band, BBb Tubas or as we call them double-b-flat Tubas are traditionally used for concert/military band and sometimes in orchestra, the traditional orchestral Tuba is a CC Tuba, F Tuba is used in orchestra for concertos or higher solos like bydlo, Eb Tuba is not accepted in orchestra because all it's registers low and high are considered to weak and quiet which I agree with because own one i also find it to have a not as nice tone compared to other Tubas, I also find this key of Tuba to have more tuning issues, no matter what Tuba always reads in bass clef, and the Horn (French Horn) and Trumpet are the only brass instruments that read in treble clef.
@pauls5745

ComedyDude1231 i think Eb horns are used commonly in Europe not so much anywhere else. oh there's plenty of other treble clef brass instruments: alto horn, both alto and tenor cor, most of the saxhorns, all G bugles (even contrabass!), alto and smaller trombones, just to name a handful. who's the maker of your horn? the better horns have compensating valve systems
@ComedyDude1231
@ComedyDude1231 9 жыл бұрын
pds tech Eb horns are popular in the UK, but for other European nations such as Germany they use Bb. For treble clef instruments I was going off common instruments. Professional tubas here have a filth valve to mimic the compensating system, and you don't need a compensating system to sound good it just takes practice to memorize what that note sounds like and how to play it correctly. I wouldn't say instrument with compensation valve systems are better, i mean anywhere outside the UK you don't find any high reputation professionals using a compensating valve Eb horn, also not very many companies make professional Eb horns and i also find a lot of professional Eb horns not having compensating systems but rather 5 front action rotary valves.
@pauls5745
@pauls5745 9 жыл бұрын
yes, i have not seen anyone I know use Eb. just not enough of them made over here to attract anything other than a collector. Im a fan of compensating valves on euphonium since you can rely on it to help. but yes, you can adjust your playing certain notes without. I love uncommon horns :) thanks for clarifying who and where Eb horns are used!

I think this is the type of tuba i have. Used to play it at school 30 yrs ago. The only difference seems to be the 1st tube coming from the mouthpiece. It drops to form a bottom u bend (with spit valve) sitting next to the 1st valve tuning u turn before coming back up to the valve input manifold. I struggle to get really low. I was wondering if you have any advice on choosing mouthpieces for this tuba as i feel i have always had the wrong mouthpiece. It's on the large side and you can also see where it used to seat deeper into it's original instrument. seems like a 13.3 id on the tube for the mouthpiece but i feel the one i have should seat in a bit deeper.

In practically every avenue of of brass playing (Orchestra, chamber, concert bands) you read Tuba, trombone and euphonium in concert pitch regardless of the key the instrument. But when you play in a traditional English style Brass Band, Tuba, trombones, Euphonium and horns read treble clef transposed to either Eb or Bb depending on the instrument.

I've recently acquired an Eb Bass and will be playing with a British style brass band and reading in treble clef for the first time in many years. You made a comment in this video to the effect that, when playing an Eb Bass, one can read in Bass Clef by essentially reading in treble clef with three added sharps. Is the opposite true - playing an Eb horn, can I read treble Clef music as if it were in Bass Clef and simply add three flats?

Mike Liu both the arban or Clarke version are written for the Bb cornet or trumpet and you will have to transpose down one whole step as you are reading treble clef in order to be in concert pitch; it's a challenge but worth it if you can't find a version for tuba in bass clef. It's very satisfying to be able to crank out a great rendition of this tune for the skeptics, if they had any doubts as to your playing abilities this will make them true believers...

It's the British Brass Band system of music where all the instruments (except bass trombone) reads treble clef and is transposed to sound in their appropriate register. Think this also means, everyone can read each others parts and can switch instruments as needed. Unrelated to the brass band, but this is also how all saxophones parts are written as, no matter what their fundamental pitch is, a saxophonist read their fingering in C Major on the treble clef and can therefore switch amongst the sax family without having to learn new fingerings or read a different clef. Still, since I learned in a different system (in America) I'm used to reading BBb tuba written as sounds in bass clef and therefore generally play bass trombone parts whenever I play in a silver band. Although, I like not having to worry about transposing, I can see the benefits of the system when switching to euphonium or trombone written as sounds as, since I'm primarily a contrabass tuba player, I'm not as quick reading ledgers above the bass clef as I am reading notes below it, lol
