AOPA needs to get involved with your suspension. AOPA shouldn't have to get involved. I am a retired federal law enforcement officer. This is an example of terrible law enforcement that management at the FAA should be managing. I see in some of the comments some very harmful prejudice. I see some people using this example of poor law enforcement to paint the picture of all agencies and all federal law enforcement being bad. This is how hateful divisiveness starts and grows. Trent, I think that you are handling this in a very sensible and appropriate manner. I hope that you continue to do so. I hope that this is a wake-up call to the FAA.

No, go arounds aren't illegal. Right now case law is, if you go around or do an inspection pass, you are now forced to make your landing there. If you don't, you can be charged with flying recklessly, flying too low to make a safe landing in the event of a engine out, and flying within 500' of persons, vehicles, property. If you attempt, you can no longer divert.
@PrinceAlhorian
@PrinceAlhorian 2 жыл бұрын
@@androidphone1901 So in short, if you pass to check your landing, deemed it was not safe to land due to reasons like let's say rocks or sticks on the landing site, you have to land there regardless or else you will be flying recklessly. Right out of the FAA's "Off Airport Ops Guide. "When evaluating a new landing site, or practicing before conducting seasonal operations, fly without passengers or cargo. Stow your survival gear as far aft as possible to avoid a forward center of gravity, while respecting the weight and balance limitations for your aircraft. Always file a flight plan detailing the specific locations you intend to explore. Make at least 3 recon passes at different levels before attempting a landing and don’t land unless you’re sure you have enough room to take off. High Level: Circle the area from different directions to de- termine the best possible landing site in the vicinity. Check the wind direction and speed using pools of water, drift of the plane, branches, grass, dust, etc. Observe the land- ing approach and departure zone for obstructions such as trees or high terrain. Intermediate: Level: Make a pass in both directions along either side of the runway to check for obstructions and runway length. Check for rock size. Note the location of the touchdown area and roll-out area. Associate land- marks with your landing area, to have a good sight picture to be used on final approach. Early morning or late after- noon sun casts shadows that yield the best conditions for determining rock size and, landing conditions. Similar to ski flying with an overcast sky condition, landing areas are very difficult to evaluate without shadows. Low Level: Make a pass to check for cuts in gravel, rocks, dips, bumps, etc., that can’t be seen from directly above. It is important to be at an angle to the runway, not above it. Certain light conditions can make a bad site seem good. Check and double check any area not used before, or lo- cations that have had high water since the last landing. Make another pass and roll one tire for a few feet to get a feel for the landing surface. Each pass should result in you becoming more comfort- able with your chosen landing area. If you are becoming less comfortable, abandon the site and seek a more suit- able landing area". While this was published by the Alaskan Region FAASTeam, the publication does not say these techniques are for use in Alaska only.

In 2007 I took a check ride for an organization that went downhill. The check airman started by asking for paperwork I was not required to show, therefore I did not have with me. He refused to give me the test without it and was very put off when I asked him to show me where it was required for me to show said paperwork, and his response of “it’s what I was told” was startling to hear from a check airman. I ended up having to have him call his superior, who agreed with me. At one point he made fun of me during the flight for refusing to fly through a cloud VFR saying “there are no eagles on board.” All of this in front of a witness who was testing after me. At the end of the flight he basically told me to get out of the plane and he’s send me the paperwork. 2 days later he called me at 6am and informed me that he was failing my test for 2 reasons. First - I forgot to check the backup GPS prior to takeoff, which was not a checklist item at that time. Second - I did not know the inspection period on the nitrogen canisters for the seat belt airbags. I appealed the decision which went to the guy who trained the check airman. In the end someone else with authority who was familiar with the matter ended up revoking the check airman’s privileges for 6 months because of what happened, but the adjudicator denied my appeal and upheld my failure and told me I could retest with him or wait for the original check airman’s privileges to be reinstated. Long way of saying I get what you’re going through despite my case honestly not being as serious. Good luck buddy, I’m rooting for you!

The Jacobs case was a revocation. His license is gone. He is barred from re-applying for a year, but he won't get his license back automatically, he will basically have to do it over. I own a Baron and fly it recreationally, just really enjoy flying family and friends around and showing friends what aviation can be about as it seems like to so many that it's such an once in a lifetime experience. Flying something bigger and somewhat sophisticated has always been what's appealing to me about flying, but until I watched your video, I never realize that there's so much more about general aviation than what I'm doing. Your videos not only help inspire non-pilots to learn more about aviation, but also encourage fellow recreation pilots to expand their horizon beyond what they are used to and feel appealed to. Thinking about this made me finally realize videos like this is not only here because you're doing cool stuff, they are important because they help encourage people to expand their knowledge and experience in life, and that desire to expand is so important to humanity. It’s not just KZfaqrs. 🙄 Some of us like the idea that we can fly and land at a non-designated landing site. There are literally millions of acres out here in the western US and Alaska that have no population, Is federal or state land or is privately owned and available for flight ops with permission, and has recreation sites (hot springs, lakes, rivers, caves, etc…) nearby that are only easily accessible by aircraft. Weather conditions change the landing zones each year, or each season, and a low pass is necessary to asses safe landing - and sometimes the answer is that some thing safe last season is no longer safe this season. Making a ruling that a low pass that doesn’t result in a landing is a violation of 91.119(c) effectively kills the low pass - no one will want to do a low pass to inspect, not land, and then get revoked by the FAA. So, no one (safe) will take the risk. It’s a dumb ruling - Should this ruling stand, it effectively kills the possibility of off-airport ops.

I've been looking at the Garmin inReach also but for my adventure motorcycle when I am out on my own so my family can keep track of my location in case I run into an issue. May go with the larger one with the built-in GPS navigation for that purpose. Anyway nice job as usual and of course the best of luck.

Based on the fact that this event/ruling will establish a binding legal precedent, doesn't any of the pilot's associations have an interest in your case. Maybe getting this video out will alert someone who can act as co-counsel in your defense.

On the subject of flight plans. Twice in my career I, or someone I was meeting, opened VFR Flight plans with Flight service and when We went to close them found that they had never been opened. In one case, this was doing glacier photography in Alaska, and the FSS nearly 4 hours after it was to be opened, still had the card on their inactive board! There is little or no recourse for such. Thus I never file if not required and rely on other means.

I never believed in defending myself. Always attack. I would sue the FAA in civil court, for cost and lost time damage, for issuing a flyer, describing how to properly assess a landing strip, before attempting to land, and have their judge rule against their own instructive flyer.

Oh my, I inherited my Father's kitfox s7 in 2015 after he passed. I really wanted to finish it. I did alot of work on it, but had a heart attack in early 2017. Needless to say I had to sell it to cover medical expenses. I'm so sorry dad! I wish I could do what Trent is doing. Him, and I loved to fly. This was his dream and I feel that I failed him. Even though I soloed my Father's Cessna 120 on my 16th birthday. God, I sure do miss flying, especially of the road Landing areas. Thank you Trent for sharing! I appreciate it. When I sold the plane, I asked the buyer to please keep me informed on the progress. Unfortunately, my dads plane burned up in the Paradise fires a few years ago..

Trent. Have you ever considered volunteering for the EAA Young Eagle program at Stead? My kids did the initial program a few weeks ago and got to go up with a volunteer pilot for the first time ever. My daughter conquered her fear of flying, but it wasn't her favorite thing. She did enjoy it though. My son is hooked. He's going back next month to build a large RC plane with the EAA group and will be able to fly it at the end of the class. He's twelve and wants to get his pilot's license now.

The one flight plan I filed, my instructor had to remind me to close it after we landed. We only had like 5 more minutes to close it before we would've got a phone call. I don't think I would file a flight plan if I had a Garmin inreach.
@realulli
@realulli 2 жыл бұрын
Then you miscalculated on your flight plan. They trigger responses only after a while (1h? 30m? not a pilot.. .;-) Btw, asking for Flight Following in flight creates some kind of "ad hoc" flight plan for you. At least it did, almost 30 years ago, in Germany.
@MaxRunia
@MaxRunia 2 жыл бұрын
@@realulli if I remember right we gave ourselves about a 20 min buffer but we were checking out the FBO and just forgot about it. I can't remember if the FAA provides an additional buffer or not before they call you, but I don't think so. The plan wasn't really needed but it was supposed to teach me about how to file them. What I learned was not to open flight plans 🤣 but I think I probably would still consider it if I was doing a true xc flight.

Hi, Trent. An opinion here, the music came in way too loud when you began talking about the legal problems. In fact, the music was unnecessary altogether. I'd rather hear you talk without the music clamoring for attention. By the way, I'm totally with you on the right to inspect a potential landing site before committing yourself and your aircraft to a landing. Great channel.

You are one of the safest pilots I've followed on KZfaq. The FAA needs to get their act together. If they go through with your suspension, then there needs to be a class action lawsuit of the FAA. They're not God and get many rulings wrong. A woman is heading this Federal Origination that isn't even a pilot. How can you appoint someone to this position that doesn't even have a PP license? That's just crazy to me. If they hammer you, this will be a great example of a Kangaroo Court! We the people can't allow this to happen to you. VOTE people, get these liberal people out of office before they destroy this country!

“Like I said…” Federales offer guidance, you follow the guidance, then they try to pull your ticket. Your buddies neighbor needs a visit to the woodshed…just a dbag move…go have an adult conversation and see what’s going on. The inspector, “prosecutor”, and judge need to be publicly identified. The Reno fsdo and it’s chief should be ashamed for wasting taxpayers money on this weak attempt at making an example of u. Go find some illegal charter or spend some desk time clearing all those LOAs that have been building up in the desk while you’ve enjoyed the Covid excuse for not getting things done.

Somebody may have already suggested this, but with your following on YT, do you reckon the FAA is just trying to make an example of you? Making you the poster child so they put fear in others? Trent, I will never forget that video in which your engine quit, you said you started to pass out from fear, you pulled yourself together and landed that plane. (Albeit down wind with no AT&T cell service.) You certainly appear to be quite responsible as a pilot. Now, what I know about flying an aircraft could be written on a pinhead with plenty of room left over; I hope you are able to successfully retain your pilot's license. Good luck. Great video!
