Since 2011 (when the ICC brought in the rule change), new balls in ODI cricket from each end has killed off the reverse swing that bowlers such as Wasim, Waqar, McGrath et al used to get in the last 10 overs an of an ODI. Need to go back to one ball used throughout the entire 50 overs.

Yes, that is something you don't see these days, but it's important to note that bouncers (head-high) were not permitted in ODIs until a few months later in September 2001. Any ball above shoulder height back then was a no-ball. The only way you were going to get hit on the head under those rules was an accidental beamer, an edge from the bat into your face, or if you were playing on a pitch like the WACA with steep bounce and the ball took off from a good length. Pre-September 2001, Ricky Ponting faced Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, Ambrose, Walsh, Bishop etc. without a helmet in ODIs. After September 2001 (when bouncers were permitted), Ricky Ponting would have to be one of the few batsmen in ODIs who didn't wear a helmet on the rare occasion (last time I remember was the 2005 Tsunami Relief match at the MCG, where he faced Zaheer Khan without a helmet)

@TheAusJT
@TheAusJT 3 жыл бұрын
Most ODIs over the past 15 years have become extremely boring to watch, due to the plethora of rule changes that have made ODIs a batsman's game. Much more even balance between bat and ball back then in 2001 compared to now, where ODI teams seem to score 300+ with consummate ease, and batsmen hit 4s and 6s like it's child's play.
@goals27
@goals27 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAusJT so true. And it's really annoying when some stupid people compare the modern batsmen record with those of 2 decades ago and say 'o what a brilliant average and strike rate' ofcourse it's gonna be better, idiots because nowadays it's batsmen game. Bowlers are just happy if they avoid conceding boundary in an over. These changes in favor of batsmen actually destroyed the whole game and it has taken away all the excitement from ODI cricket. ODI cricket was a treat to watch back in the day.

3 observations from this match (besides it being well-known for the close finish): 1) Someone mentioned about Razzaq playing fast bowling without a helmet? Yes, that is something you don't see these days, but it's important to note that bouncers (head-high) were not permitted in ODIs until a few months later in September 2001. Any ball above shoulder height back then was a no-ball. The only way you were going to get hit on the head under those rules was an accidental beamer, an edge from the bat into your face, or if you were playing on a pitch with steep bounce and the ball took off from a good length. Pre-September 2001, Ricky Ponting faced Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, Ambrose, Walsh, Bishop etc. without a helmet in ODIs. After September 2001 when bouncers were allowed, Ricky Ponting would have to be one of the few batsmen in ODIs who didn't wear a helmet against fast bowling on the rare occasion (last time I remember was the 2005 Tsunami Relief match at the MCG, where he faced Zaheer Khan without a helmet) 2) No boundary rope in front of the pavilion end at Lord's (until 2010). Now with the advent of LED advertising boards, the boundary rope is 6-7 metres or so in front of that fence. The rope at most international grounds has also moved further in from the fence over the past 2 decades. This is seen especially at Australian venues. All you have to do is look at highlights of matches from the early 2000s (when ropes became mandatory) and compare how close the rope was to the fence to today, where in many parts of the ground it's easily 10+ metres away from the fence. 3) IIRC (someone can correct me if I'm wrong), this was the last year the white Dukes ball was used before the ECB switched to Kookaburra the following year as preparation for the 2003 World Cup (and have used white Kookaburra cricket balls ever since). Combined with the rule change of new balls from each end in 2011, most bowlers in ODIs have been on a hiding to nothing and many 300+ scores by teams have been racked up. If the ICC ODI laws of the game had to be changed in 2011 to accommodate the fact that the white Kookaburra doesn't last 50 overs, I would absolutely love to see the white Dukes ball be brought back as it at least offered something for the bowlers throughout the innings, let alone it lasted the full 50 overs. 1999 World Cup still remains one of the best I've seen, purely because bowlers had something to work with throughout the entire innings and batsmen had to use their brain and find ways to counteract it and score runs. The good batsmen that tournament were the ones that were able to adapt to the conditions (e.g. Dravid, Waugh brothers, Ganguly), so it wasn't impossible to score runs in those conditions, but there was a clear separation of the wheat and the chaff (metaphorically speaking). Generally speaking, I 100% agree with Tendulkar and Waqar Younis on this issue, that the 50 over format needs to go back to using one ball throughout the entire innings like it was pre-October 2007.

@@samuelbhatti4109 LOL! Thanks I don't know if I'm a diehard, but I guess I'm a bit frustrated how much cricket has been dumbed down over the past 2 decades just to make batsmen look good, so they can hit more 6s and inflate their averages. The rise of flat-track bullies, especially over the past decade, has been enormous, and it's amazing how much they struggle on the rare occasion the pitch/conditions slightly offer something for the bowlers. I honestly don't see how that's helping batsmen's techniques to develop when all the cards are currently being stacked in their favour. Most batsmen have had it too easy for too long, and it's time the genuine contest between bat and ball is brought back into ODIs.

Catches Win Matches, Youhana who top-scored with 81 in the 1st Innings dropped Trescothick and he went on to score 137, which was at one point match-winning but then Pakistan pulled it out of nowhere and won by 2 runs. The 'Catches Win Matches' Saying didn't work here as there will be an exception for almost anything.
