This book definitelly felt like I was sitting with Hoid (and maybe eating stew, or something else warm and delicious) next to a fireplace and he was telling me this story of a time he got cursed! I LOVED it. It made me really emotional, and I loved Hoid's serious passages on various topics because they hit hard, and it still makes me emotional to talk about this book. It was perfect. (Also I'm glad I went into it without prior knowledge and discovered everything in order too, it was such a delightful experience!)

I believe Sanderson explained in the book that they just get their water from the rain, which travels in predictable patterns outside the Midnight Sea. So islands probably just have cisterns protected by silver to catch the runoff and store for later. And larger landmasses would have more or less similar geography to the real world, though I’m sure their river deltas are interesting.

Tress was the first Sanderson book I read ever, really the only book I read in the past 10+ years on my own volition. From a friend's recommendation, was able to read it at the start of the year, and since became a massive Cosmere fan. Since then reading Mistborn Era 1, Stormlight 1 & 2, Warbreaker, some of the arcanum unbounded novellas, Sp 2 & 3 also. Right now planning to finish Stormlight 3 & 4, dawnshard, and elantris before SP4! Tress was easily my gateway drug into this fantastical universe, and I cannot put these books down. I thank it for sparking my joy for reading for the first time in my life!

I have never read anything by Sanderson, but I was really curious about the beautiful cover. Seafaring adventure with a female lead taking charge of her life and story that is inspired by The Princess Bride. One of the best books and movies of all time. And it's a stand-alone, so I don't have to get into a series. I might have to check this one out.

Brandon talked about the water outside of the book, but even in the book they mention they come from DEEP wells. Also, it DOES rain in ToTES, it's kind of one of the big plot points in the story? Essentially, Brandon said that the magical process of the activated spores "decomposing" is crucial to the water cycle.
@CapturedInWords

Ahhh my bad, you're right! Somehow those points slipped my mind since I read this a few months back. I didn't know Sanderson talked about the water outside the book though, very interesting!

Great video! As a kid I vaguely remember reading a short story in one of my English textbooks (or must’ve been another language) about a ship sailing through a misty desert. I wish I remembered what it was called. The characters had no idea the ‘ocean’ wasn’t water, which in fact were the tears of the moons. At the end it’s revealed they were inside a bottle the whole time. It was a strange story but Tress reminds me of it. I grew up in a culture where folktales, myths, and short stories were part of our Languages curriculum so the premise of Tress sounds very familiar.

I have been meaning to read Brandon Sandersons work for a long time but always had more stuff further up my TBR. I recently got a copy of this book at B&N and it was my first Sanderson read. I honestly loved every minute of it, which makes me excited to read more of his work even though I know not all of his work has the "cozy" vibe I got from this book. His writing style is just phenomenal and I can't read to explore the Cosmere

Which is good that you're having such an impact; bad, if I don't like it because I intend to forge my own personal 'Shardblade' and embark on a killing spree, riding upon my Charger of Death - a shopping trolley I'll steal from Tesco's... insert your supermarket of choice? @fakjbf3129
@fakjbf3129 Жыл бұрын
Sanderson has said many times in the past that he intentionally makes his prose unobtrusive so that readers can focus on the characters and story. It is very deliberate on his part, and a lot of the people who criticize him for it just don’t seem to understand that it’s a stylistic choice not a failing on his part.

It definitely rains on this world and isn't a "dry world." In fact, that is one of the most terrifying things in this world, because when it rains the spores cause immense destruction. I also don't remember Sanderson ever saying it was dry in the narrative. I'm not entirely sure why you thought the world was dry.

No magic system annex (about Spores of Lumar in this case) is such a waste. I’ve become acustomed of reading through additional pages that explain how the investiture of this particular world works. I liked the story though , but yeah Brandon showed only 5 out of 12 spores and only 3 seas. I get that Tress not travelingmuch has no experience with other seas, but Hoid narating it could tell a lot more about Lumar. 😢

Mistborn references: -We saw Roseite in The Lost Metal being “used” by Twinsoul. -Ulaam is a Kandra, he is even mentioned once in The Lost Metal -Hoid mentions that he is a Worldbringer, who were kind of the scadrian version of the Worldsingers. (Or maybe they are the Rosharan version of the Worldbringers) -Hoid mentions Sazed and says that he released the Kandras. This might be a reference to Era 3 or 4, since we have not seen him doing that in Era 2. -Tress herself mentions Death with nails in his eyes, which is a reference to Marsh/Ironeyes. -Ulaam says that Father invented the scalpels. I am fairly sure that here he is referring to the Lord Ruler, since he was Kandra’s “Father”, but since they also called Vin “Mother”, he might be referring to Sazed, as their new “Father”. I lean more towards the Lord Ruler, though. -Hoid says “A Push for every Pull, an old adversary of mine always says.” being a clear reference to Kelsier.

I haven't read it yet, but from your summary it doesn't sound like Charlie actually does anything? I'm sure he does *something*, but so does Buttercup. I'm just saying, it would be kinda funny if Sanderson tried to "fix" the Princess Bride, only to recreate it with a gender swapper protagonist.
