In this video from the Berklee Online Interview Series, Berklee Online Instructor Prince Charles Alexander interviews music mogul Trevor Horn. As a music producer, singer, songwriter, and bassist, Trevor Horn emerged on the music scene with the 1979 hit single, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles, which was famously the first video to play on MTV. In this wide-ranging interview, Horn talks about his journey from working with Geoffrey Downes, playing with Yes, and picking up his first synthesizer, to finding his sound as a producer for Seal, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Grace Jones, Tina Turner, and more, to running a record label and publishing company with his late wife, Jill Sinclair. The pair also discuss the parallels between modern day music production and the technological revolution of the ‘80s, both as musicians turned producers.

Someone told he used to work as an maintenence engineer for Trevors studio in the peek of his career. He said he was the nicest person you could ever wish to work for.

@@taccamine8312I can vouch for that. I worked for him in the late 80’s and he was lovely, in fact every star I met around then was friendly and a pleasure to be around :)

The 80s really started with David Bowie's album Low in 1977, and its precursor, the song Golden Years from the Station to Sstation, and Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill. It's the combination of utter seriousness and utter fun in the same heartbeat. But the grandparent of the 1980s are really Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. The Mirror Song from the 1992 movie Toys is my favourite production I've heard of his.

Fantastic interview. His wife Jill, certainly got it right about the vocals on crazy. Can't imagine that song working with the vocals any quieter.

There's something fascinating about watching two people who share the same interests with respect for each others knowledge talking in this way, even if I understand very little in the way of technical terms.

Is this in the 'conservatory' at the back of SARM Music Village, with the Stiff Records stuff in the window? Would love to go back to the place. Absolutely loved my day there. Sorry, i am a Trevor Horn geek. First time I met him was at the 30th playback of WTTP with him, Stephen and JJ in Basing Street, then with him and Ski Oakenfull at Basing Street. Overall, got signed copies of WTTP, Lexicon album, Riding Into Blue (Inga) 12". Such a nice bloke. We WILL meet again!

At long last a decent, well researched interviewer for Trevor Horn. Horn is a bravura producer with few if any peers... For me, I put him in the same tier as Phil Spector or George Martin. Kudos to PCA for a truly wonderful interview.

brilliant ! Make sure to ask Trevor where the legendary BASS SOUND on Frankie Goes To Hollywood's chart hit 'Two Tribes' comes from. ( PPG Wave ? )
@FailedMuso
@FailedMuso 3 жыл бұрын
The Two Tribes bass part is actually multi-layered and consists of up to five different elements. I've spoken with Andy Richards, Nigel Bates and JJ Jeczalik (who all contributed to the sessions) about this and what you hear is a combination of PPG Wave, Fairlight, Synclavier and an actual bass guitar. The genius thing that Trevor did was to bring different elements of the bass line to the fore, so if you listen to one of the extended mixes, such as Annihilation or Keep the Peace, where there are long instrumental parts, you can hear the different tonal qualities that Trevor brings in to suit each section of the track. Sometimes the bass guitar is dominant, others it is the PPG. It's absolute genius and one of the many reasons why Trevor is the best :-)
