The Trevor Project

6 жыл бұрын

This opening monologue from John Oliver of HBO's Last Week Tonight is from The Trevor Project’s signature twice-annual fundraiser, TrevorLIVE. Held on June 19, 2017 at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square New York City, the event hosts hundreds of supporters enjoying an evening of spectacular music and comedy performances in support of the lifesaving programs and services of the nation’s leading crisis intervention and suicide prevention organization focused on LGBTQ+ youth, The Trevor Project.
More information about TrevorLIVE: www.trevorlive.org/
The Trevor Project is the leading and only accredited national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people under the age of 25. The Trevor Project offers a suite of crisis intervention and suicide prevention programs, including TrevorLifeline, TrevorText, and TrevorChat as well as a peer-to-peer social network support for LGBTQ young people under the age of 25, TrevorSpace. Trevor also offers an education program with resources for youth-serving adults and organizations, a legislative advocacy department fighting for pro-LGBTQ legislation and against anti-LGBTQ rhetoric/policy positions, and conducts research to discover the most effective means to help young LGBTQ people in crisis and end suicide. If you or someone you know is feeling hopeless or suicidal, our Trevor Lifeline crisis counselors are available 24/7/365 at 866.488.7386. www.TheTrevorProject.org

@@asherikamichaela8425 Oh *please* , half of our Senate and more than half of our House is made up of ppl who would toss the weak, the elderly, the sick, the homeless, our children, the entire immigrant population & anybody who makes less than say $100k per year down the toilet. They would prefer that all the programs set up to help out those ppl mentioned above were abolished and the money spent on the wealthy, the ppl who pay for their campaigns & weapons for the military instead (bc our present trillion dollar [I don’t know the amount but it’s always totally enormous and seemingly outrageously expensive] budget for them is not enough). The stupid half-wits that booed the President while he was giving the State of the Union address the other day also followed the teenage children of a massive school shooting around and shrieked at them (I do not lie) that they were “pretending that they were survivors of that tragedy” and that they were “clearly actors” bc the kids spoke clearly and concisely about gun control and apparently that was totally wrong. How could they?!! No thought to the idea of how their continued harassment would affect the survivors of such a nightmare. No thought to what their constant presence was doing to the psyche of the children. Just total psychopaths with their own agenda. You *clearly* did not *corner the market* on stupidity, gullibility and outright hate.

I think this community is painted like a really welcoming place full of nice, fun people, and while it can be like that, I see just as much exclusion here as everywhere else. I mean there's gatekeeping of trans people, even more for people with nonbinary genders. There's biphobia around evey corner. We've all seen "no femmes, no asians, no fattys" in some gay guys bio. A lot of gay men are really misogynistic and base their expression of their sexuality on just being incredibly disgusted with women. I dunno, I'm not trying to be negative, but the LGBT community could just... It could use some work.
@brawlinharry6461
@brawlinharry6461 6 жыл бұрын
okay maddie i can relate to that. and i have to concede to your experience as a straight white man who wants no human being discriminated against. i count some gay people among my friends and my best bro was born a girl but my insight to the lgbtq community is shallow at best. my idealist side tells me that people who have experienced discrimination would be sympathetic to people who are discriminated for different reasons. of course reality differs from that. i still think that the lgbtq community is more open than the general population and at its core caring and affectionate, so i dont mind oliver giving us a somewhat sugarcoated picture.
@kaivickers166

I couldn't agree more. My brother is in the process of transitioning and there are a lot of lesbians who refuse to acknowledge trans-women as females because they "can't truly understand what it means to be a woman with a woman's struggles." Grief, seeing what (s)he is going to go through to become a woman is more struggle than I can imagine. I support him/her (he is still currently living as a man) implicitly but I'm the only relative we have who isn't going to completely disown him/her which breaks my heart...that so many of the LGBTQ community also won't be accepting pisses me off to no end.

Kai Vickers that is heartbraking to hear. when my best bro told me he was not a girl but a man and would go through some changes to his body, i accepted that without a second thoght. i dont understand why it is so hard to do just that. if you think about how fcking hard it is to a) find the answer as to why you are so unhappy with your body and sexuality (being trans is not the first thought that pops to your mind when youre a teenager) and b) find the certainty that you live in the wrong body and the courage to change that (which is permanent and hormones can damage your body in some ways, im not really good on all the details of the risks involved) and finally c) to tell your family and the people you grew up with. if you have that in mind it really seems cruel to say that a transgender woman is not a real woman because she does not bleed once in the month. people arent as good as you need them to be. as maddie said (i believe it was her): there are gay republicans. dont let that stop you, be the change you wanna see in people. btw: after surgory and hormone therapy, you would never guess that he used to be a girl. he had some wild times in his college years where he had a lot of one night stands and he never had any problems explaining the situation. ofc he had to explain, but that didnt stop his girls from wanting to sleep with him. ive seen the happy ending, people who care about the people not labels you put on them. kai i hope your sister will be fine. one tip if you want it: dont write crap like '(s)he', that hurts. gender identity is determined in the brain, so whatever her genitals look like, if she knows she is a woman then she already is, despite the fact that she didnt have surgery and hormes yet. best of luck!!!

Didn't know they did "make a wish" for the mentally instable.. But it's nice to have John Oliver there to cheer them up.

Not remotely. The goal is accepting and loving each other regardless of their preferences or biological makeup.
