Thanks Lucas & Ryan! It's refreshing to hear a SWAT guy say he doesn't use remote light switches to keep things simple and uncluttered. Similar with the 20-round mag, which I too keep in my home defense rifle for maneuverability. It should make all the basement warriors think twice before denigrating someone else's setup, but it probably won't.

My favorite part of this is watching Lucas process all the information. Specifically when Ryan was talking about chemlights, 8:10 , Lucas seemed to be intrigued to find out they dont have an SOP.

After 11 years and lots of deployments carrying 210 rounds of 5.56, it's still weird to me seeing guys rocking just 2-3 mags. I get it though.

Ryan's take had a lot of good insight. It would be cool to see him on the range demonstrating the drills he runs.

I would love to see content on what a civilian *might* plan for I believe many of us struggle with having too much on us at any given point due to the "what if" factor

I would absolutly love to see a Video about a Heavy Duty Assaulter Set-up. Minimalist and Medium Set Ups were discussed enough, its time for Heavy Stuff.

I would find comparisons between more "budget" optics and their expensive counterparts very intriguing and beneficial. While some people have the $2k to spend on an optic and mount, lots of people don't. I feel that comparisons showing where the price difference gets reflected would help more people make a more informed decision regarding their budget allocations. Maybe that cheaper Vortex or PA LPVO will meet your needs, and you can save some money there to allocate more towards ammo and training? Maybe the opposite, where the places corners were cut will result in you having to allocate more budget towards replacing the optic down the line?

Second mag on the belt. It's a little faster than reloading from the PC, and 2+1 gives you a lot more breathing room if stuff gets protracted or extra spicy. The comment about shooting one guy twenty times makes sense, especially if you're in a group. But I'm a regular guy who's thinking about that protracted rifle on rifle engagement or the ole 2v1. Maybe I shoot #1 5 times, shoot #2's cover 5-10 times, reload.... now I'm out of mags. Hope I dont have a magazine related malfunction and now my rifle is unfixably toast or something. None of that shit is super likely, but it ain't impossible, and if it isn't impossible, it could happen to you, and that could be a really bad day.

6:26 & 10:44 just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it will NEVER happen Sgt. Timothy Gramins traffic stop shootout was a fantastic example, he barely had ANY ammo left after shooting a guy 14 times with .45ACP, the suspect got hit in both lungs, the heart, and three places on the head/face, again, he was shot in the HEART and both lungs but was still moving and trying to shoot at officer Gramins, the only thing that put the suspect down were three shots to his face when he looked under officer Gramins patrol car, he was STILL alive when they got to the ER He now carries 145 rounds of ammo While things might seem like they would be too unlikely to ever happen will set you up for failure, I'm not saying carry 25 magazines, but bring at least 2 in the vest 1 in the gun That little extra weight shouldn't be noticeable but could save your life if you run into a person wacked out of their mind on something basically making them invincible unless you brain pan them Expect the best, prepare for the worst

I would love a video of a "heavy" plate carrier setup, something meant for longer engagments (1-2 days) and gear for sustainment for those longer engagments

Here's the thing about LE experience dictating gear selection, Matt Pranka (paraphrasing) said it best: "The average law enforcement engagement is relatively unopposed, against an adversary who is uncommitted and unwilling to fight". It's very easy to get into the mindset of "this is what has worked 99.9% of the time so it's good enough" and end up being absolutely unprepared for changing trends or outliers. Just because criminals now are not competent or truly willing adversaries does not mean you won't run into a dude who is actually tactically minded and competent with a firearm. Take the cartel guys for instance, plenty of them have legitimately high level training and gear. They've also been spreading all along the west coast as of the past few years. For the most part they do not interact with local law enforcement because for the most part local law enforcement is relatively easy for a technologically and organizationally sophisticated adversary to detect, track, and avoid. But relying on evil men to choose not to engage you is probably not a prudent choice. Would you want to be in a shootout with a cartel security team or a similarly competent and committed adversary with 21 rounds in your gun and a single spare mag? I know I wouldn't.

Retired after 30 years in two separate Los Angeles County agencies, 25 of those on SWAT. The location escapes me, however, back in the 90's, I read a debrief in the NTOA magazine of a team doing a hit that got pinned down on an elevated wrap around porch of the house after a hot breach that went bad. Those guys were begging for ammo. Because of that one incident, I always carried six rifle mags (2 on my armor, 2 on my thigh, 1 horizontal on my hip to signify it's time to extract), and 5 pistol magazines (2 on my thigh, 2 on my armor, and 1 in the pistol). At one point when our team was transitioning from MP5's to rifles and the team was mixed with weapons, I was also carrying 2 MP5 mags just in case I needed a partners platform. I'm 6'3"/295, weight isn't my worry because I'm not sprinting for blocks in full kit as a breacher.

Ryan's swat loadout is out of Policy. He's not allowed to bring those sexy guns on a raid.

To me as a civ I think if you wanted to carry more ammo buttake up less pouch space, you could substitute 2x 40rd mags in place of 3x 30rd mags. Because chances are, you if burn through your initial 20rd mag in your rifle, you could utilize the higher capacity mags but leave a pouch for multitools etc.

Seems reasonable and as mentioned adaptable for missions specific scenarios. All though out, with good solide arguments to "why" and "where". 👍 thumbs up from someone that has runned as "light" infantry and outer fun not-so-light roles.

Definitely agree ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain. Start off with what you think you need and reevaluate. I started off with lots of gear on my carrier for work. After hours of wearing it, I realized I didn’t need half the gear I carried. Also definitely agree that a 20 round mag in the gun is a game changer. I have 2 30 rounders for reloads, but could get away with only 1.

My only comment (and I am sure Ryan has) always make sure your team, and your partners know where your tourniquet is. Alot of departments in my area have an actual SOP on where exactly the tourniquet needs to be on your kit. I truly agree with Ryan having it dead center upfront and visible. If your buddy needs to slap it on for you he shouldn't have to look for it. Ideally if treating your buddy, you use his tourniquet so that you still have yours.

Doing EOD vehicle ops in Afghanistan, I also ran a 20 round PMAG for my first mag. Made a big difference getting in and out of the truck and moving around much easier.

The answer is always mission specific. If you are doing a long range patrol the setup is going to be different then a HVT hit that’s a few hours in between infil and exfil. For civilians maintaining mobility and flexibility are probably the most important things.

20 round mags are cool. I have a bunch for the same reason. Nice to have the gun a little lighter and handier and you can always carry 30s or bigger for reloads.

As the late Pat Rogers has said on numerous occasions, the mission drives the gear train. And it's always nice to have a government agency dropping huge coin on the best stuff available. I don't have an agency budget, and won't have a truck full of teammates rolling with me, so my set up is significantly different.

As someone who is new to plate carriers and body armor, I don't know enough to know what makes a Crye that much better than a $50 amazon airsoft special. Maybe a video showing the differences and doing some testing to show where they will break if they quality isn't there. Also, maybe a good, better, best options too. Maybe do something like that with other gear too, like battle belts, helmets, clothing, and/or shoes. Thanks for the great content.

Very cool. As a bit of a gear nerd I love watching the videos with the "why" behind all the equipment. Now, a Matt Pranka gear rundown. If you could convince Matt to do a video with you, that would be something.

Love the AC1 as a basic slick kit with minimal gear, running Hesco's and added some after-market shoulder pads which come in handy for workouts with the plate carrier and long runs.

Ryan has been hitting the "weights", by weights I mean "TRT", by TRT I mean low-dose steroid cycle.

It's very cool to see how cops and other guys run their kits. In the military I always have a million pouches and hundreds of rounds on me and his insights on what he does is very helpful.

Personally I'd still go with a 30rnd mag, because I don't have any 20ies. Because I am right handed I'd switch the radio and the banger. Maybe another mag there somewhere, just for 'what if.' That is about it...

I carry an AR mag on both of my duty belts, (SWAT vs patrol) 1 on my carrier for SWAT and 1 stays in ny carbine. That way if I need my carbine on patrol always have 2 mags. On SWAT I always have 3. Chem lights I carry the Marco light despenser. In my dangler I keep medical, a tiny bottle of water and a protein bar. I also carry a multi-tool and a metal paint can opener. (If you know you know).

I would imagine that one major difference between a combat loadout and a SWAT loadout is that SWAT doesn't have to worry as much about infill and exfill. Jeff Gurwich talks about how you should NOT let your mission dictate your combat loadout, largely because you cannot control the variables associated with infill and exfill in a combat environment. I would also imagine that's why 60rds (edit: 50rds) is sufficient for a SWAT loadout, because a SWAT team should never have to fight their way out of a mission like a soldier might have to do in a warzone. But this is definitely a great video, and it's interesting to hear the specific requirements of a SWAT loadout.

Makes sense caring low mag counts on your body(especially where you know you will out numbers potential threats at minimum of 3:1, but expect more like 10+:1). The only caveat to that for me, would be to have bag sling/bale/duffle in the car/truck/rig load with spare mags

I use a 20 for range simply because I don't like monopoding from a bench. The 20 is a good size for that. Good breakdown of a small assault loadout.
