Everyone says so and so is the most underrated guitarist, but Trey actually is that guy

Trey is a master of all music styles and through his mastery and joy of playing, he has been able to create his own unique sound, tone, and genre of music we call the modern jam band. In the 90s, I took a classical guitar class at a big university that I will not mention the name of because I don’t want to get into putting down my teacher who is famous in the classical guitar style, and had a PhD in classical guitar and had written many classical guitar books and was highly respected among his peers. My classical guitar teacher was really a master of the classical playing. However to my chagrin, He actually said “that blues, and jazz, rock, reggae, was not music”. I was truly turned off by that. I wrote a paper about going to see Phish live in the mid nineties, and all of the emotions and techniques and sounds that the band was able to make, and how they played off each other by listening to each other. How they improvised, took some risks and also played the complex intricate songs, and were meticulous about playing the song as written, but then also being able to take earned liberties with the song by slightly improvising over composed material. I did get an A on the paper, and I learned all of the lessons and aced the classical guitar tests; but each time my classical guitar PHD professor put down other musical styles other than classical, it made me decide to start to skip his classes. For the final I had to play Greensleeves, and I played it perfectly, but my teacher said “If you did not play that perfectly, I was going to give you an F, because you skipped some classes lately.” I got his point of view about giving me an F if I did not play the final perfectly, but at the same time, I really did love all of the other types of music, and I can only think of a handful of other guitar players who embrace all styles of music like Trey and Phish and integrate them so incredibly into their musical creations. We are all very blissed that Trey has decided to give us music theory and guitar lessons here. Thank you Trey, we are sincerely and genuinely grateful for you, your teaching, and your devotion to music, the multiple styles you have mastered, your complex elegant musical compositions, improvisation, and legendary rock guitar playing.

As a lifelong Phish fan since the late 90's, a former drummer and current guitar player, words fail to explain how much I'm loving these videos. Thank you so much Trey, you are much appreciated my friend 🙏

Ben Folds has a great first piano lesson for beginners and he basically said to have your kid put their hands on the keyboard, didn't matter where, didn't have to be a chord, just push down on the keys and move all around and it sounded awful. Could be fast, slow, loud, or quiet. His point though was that you keep moving around the keyboard until you felt the power and connection to that instrument. Upon reflection, I learned that it didn't matter what it sounded like to me, as long as, my 8yo in this case, showed up to the instrument (or pillow) or whatever and created a vibration or sound that could be harnesses into an emotion that was felt by my son, that he was off to a perfect start. The speakers on the keyboard would beg to differ as they are now blown but in full transparency, that was my fault :) Thank you for this lesson as well because I feel the same sentiment ("throw away the cord books") and am looking forward to going through your other lessons.

Thank you for doing this. I’ve been listen to Trey’s work, often mesmerized by how complex Phish’ music is. Its great to hear Trey talk about music and simply something is appears so scary and complex when first approached.

It would be so fun to play guitar w Trey someday. I have "played" w Phish many days the last few years. I just throw on live Phish and play along. There is no arrogance w Trey, when he plays he doesnt try to "out complex" other musicians for show. He listens, and all ego just goes away. Listen to him and Derek Trucks play together for the most soulful divine, experience! Just look at him in this video, see the joy and light!

He's really on to something here. I think it helps to have the rudimentary understanding of how sheet music works - being able to visualize the different time divisions that he mentions, eighth notes, quarter notes, triplets, quintuplets etc. can help to understand them more and to be able to create sequences of them. It's interesting that he used Remain in Light as a record to practice rhythm to, because there aren't really chord changes in those songs, and I can see how it could be a good record to jam along to if say, you were beginning your journey to have a music career based on improvisation. I learned how to play the guitar by jamming along with records too.

Super humble Trey. As a music school dropout that learned to play by ear it's great to see how artist come up. Thank you. I hope that all can experience the sensation of being one with a musical instrument. Doing my best to support local talent with the sound, stage and lighting of live gigs these days. Cheers & stuff.

Hey Trey. Thanks for the lessons man! I started the first one this morning and will continue. Set my day right. That’s a good song title btw 😉😂Listening to your albums 25 years ago is how I learned to play not only the guitar, but also bass, drums, and some keys. Thanks Page! And…I’m now finishing up my band’s debut album, mixing/mastering/solo work, and it’s great to have your lessons in the mix. Glad I found it. Boogie bruddha.

As someone who has never heard Trey's music before, but the lessons were recommended to me, I must say I loved this first lesson. Really, really interesting and helpful! I'm gonna keep watching more of Trey's lessons and check out his music as well (for his fans out there, what do you recommend as a good starting place?)

People will say listen to the live recordings but you can do that for the rest of your life at this point. Listen to Phish's studio albums either in chronological order or reverse chronological order. Every one of them is a masterpiece. If you're more into metal then listen to Oysterhead. If you want more funky ensemble and world music type stuff listen to Trey Anastasio Band.

Bouncing round the room on the studio album lawnboy was the first song I heard, then bathtub gin was the 2nd song but I was hooked from the 1st one. All of "a live one" would give a good idea of their sound and style. My fave live album is Amsterdam. Bouncin round the room start there. Bands don't sing enough rounds anymore

That is why even though I love the Velvet Underground and the song Rock and Roll I still sorta cringe lyrically every time they play it It was the last song I heard live because I dipped out of Star Lake early on both nights to avoid traffic and being a slave to the crowd control and I missed a great Tube Ghost but oh well I wish they encored w R and R and I missed that instead and played Tube as the set 2 ender which it never is but would be so cool to have a funky long Tube as the end of the show of life Show of Life is a better encore because it is honest or More even lyrics are important to me more now and clearly they are to Trey the more people he loses and misses in his life

I refuse to listen to everything I cant dig all rap and heavy metal and country and my wifes love of EMO and Goth rock i try i like some rap I love 2Pac and NAS Ilmatic and I can stomach Eminem in small doses because he just so negative and mean and funny but it gets old and heavy metal i only love mainstream like Metallica and Tool Smashing Pumpkins Fiona Apple but if I am honest they are more Alternative Rock really I love Ben Folds and Billy Joel I love piano except Elton John I cant get into him i only have Goodbye Yellowbrick Road full album and country I dont own any country I love bluegrass like Nickelcreek and Allison Krauss though Forget About It is one of my all time favorite albums of all time and I love elements of it like in The Counting Crows but they are country rock not just country
