Hi Bill (& all). I have a quandary and this is it: I recently purchased a Triang 'Princess Royal' (No: 46200 Class 8P) on the well known auction site. It's a lovely smooth and reasonably quiet runner (although she draws 1.5 amps at full speed), so the original owner must have treated her like a pet dog. What I want to know is what is the year of her manufacture. Description: 1) Nigh on perfect condition (almost new) in a BR 2nd era (dartboard with wings on the tender) livery, and maroon in colour. 2) The letter 'S' engraved on the front underside of the loco's chassis. 3) The tender is marked underneath with 'Triang R30/R31 Made in England', but no catalogue number on the loco itself. 4) She does not have the old 'open' D couplings, but instead has the later 'closed' D couplings. However, these could have been changed by the previous owner in an attempt to 'upgrade' her. 5) A blatantly obvious screw on the front of the running board just under the smokebox door for removing the chassis. Answers on a postcard please and the winner will be awarded 10 points! Cheers, Paul. 👍

Blimey ! That’s a difference. Personally I’d have kept the smoke generator myself. I’m going to try mine with vape liquid… I’ll let you know if it works. Hat’s off mate for this restoration, I’ve enjoyed every minute. Since I’ve been subscribed I’m now armed and ready for the restoration of my entire fleet which has been sitting in boxes for far too long now. I think I’ll make a start in the New Year. I’ve got 4 years or so until retirement and a new layout, so if I work well everything should be ready for 2026!!

Much quieter Bill. Good fix. However, this model came out between 2003 and 2005 so is not really that old. I have a 1960's Britannia still puffing smoke so I'm surprised that the smoke generator is suspected to be an issue/potential problem. They don't get used much so I guess that disabling it is not a problem with the owner anyway. Stay safe. Monsville Railways
