Hi Everyone, today I’m sharing with you my illustrated explanation of the mind bending British-Australian film Triangle.
The film that centers on a single mum, trapped in two intersecting time loops, trying desperately to get back to her son. The video will work through the time loops first and then it will go into why our protagonist is trapped in her time loop.
As always I hope you enjoy this video and thank you to all my subscribers for your ongoing support :)

I've always loved this movie. Something to note is that the taxi driver is most likely death. He shows up when her and her son die, and asks her to return, which she doesn't, she lies and tries to cheat death for herself and her son instead.

So basically when it loops back around, Jess thinks she can stop the cycle by going onto the Triangle, and not let the others get on the ship when that part comes. But she loses her memory when she falls asleep and doesn't remember the whole cycle thingy, which just restarts it. She can't accept the fact her son is dead and keeps repeating this endless cycle unknowingly. Wow.

I know this comment is old but maybe someone still read this: My question is, where did unmask Jess (2) come from? She's the only one who's very very determined to kill everyone. BUT she's also the only one who actually dies (killed by the other jess (4) on the deck of the ship). Now, to my understanding, this is the Jess (2) who originally was masked (Jess 3), fell into the sea, got to the land, yade yade, goes back to the harbor and has full knowledge now what will happen. Her memory wasn't erased. She goes on the ship, now determined to really kill everyone. But eventually she gets killed by another Jess. Now she wakes up, on the boat after "just having a dream", and that's where Jess loses her memory. Here's where the loop indeed restarts. So technically, there are two type of loops. One, where she does not have memory, and one where she does. The movie only shows the first one, and hints the second one with the ending and some scenes like the unmask Jess. Thoughts? Edit: Maybe extending this thought with the terms of the video: Jess 1 & Jess 3 vs. Jess 2 & Jess 4 are the two loops where in one she has full memory and in the other she experiences the loop for the first time. Jess 1 is the version who goes through the loop without knowledge where Jess 2 is the version who already went through the loop and knows what to do. The video mentions, at 13:13 that Jess 3 kills sunny dressed jess in contrast to privious reactions (where she hesitated). "she's hardened". That would explain Jess 2 behavior how she kills her friends with the knife without caring anymore. Anyway, so at the end, Jess 3 boards the ship again, knowing what to do now: Here, she become Jess 2 (or technically Jess 6). However, she fails and gets killed. Getting killed is what resets her memory and she wakes up again on the boat. So Jess 2 (or 6) became now Jess 1 (or 5). That's, in my opinion, the only plausible explanation for who Jess 2 is (her determination to kill everyone).

Melissa George is a very underrated actress. The film is complex and her role is very nuanced and layered. She was charming in 30 Days of Night and if you knew how demanding Slade's schedule was on top of it being one of the most authentic dark vampire tales, plus allowing very little makeup...which is brave for an actress, it makes the film even more enjoyable a ride.

Excellent analysis, I found that the key to understand better is extracting out what happened in Jess' REAL LIFE that caused such a heavy punishment in the after life, and so here it is my take: ► Real Life: 1 - In real life she killed her soon in a moment of rage, the same morning day that she had scheduled a yacht trip with her friends. 2 - she dumps her son's body in a black bag in the trunk of her car. 3 - she changes her clothes, her stained sundress for her shorts. 4 -heads to the harbor. 5 - her friends see her a little off, it is obvious in her face the guilty feeling> 6 - all of them died , except Heather who drowned in a storm. This is so far what happened, then Death (driver) offered her the chance to accept her guilt and her son's killing and move on in the after-life. She refuses, thinking that she can make things right and on a second chance stop her son's death. Denies any guilt, and does not accept her death....DEATH punishes her in a eternal loop of redemption making sure that every time her mind is blanked out to start over again. ► Afterlife So the movie starts......all that happens in the ocean liner=loop in afterlife the accident= part of one Jess's loop in the after life, it never happened in real life, it is clear that her son died at 8.17 am, notice also how sundress' Jess has the same blood pattern on her face as the evil Jess'es in the ship when she is grazed by a bullet, this mean that her evil part died, the boys in the band had the AEOLUS ship name, so, all this proves that it never happened, just one of her many attempts to make things right in-the after life..

It's wrong though. The clock in the kitchen actually reads 7:15. We cant read Tommy's watch but Jess' watch and the clock in the Aeolus reads 8:17. It is expected that Tommy dies just as we see it, in an horrific car accident because his mother was yelling at him and drifted in front of a truck at 8:17 am. The others died at 11:30 in the boat wreck.

@@n3rds3y3vi3w Yes, exactly. Now check this out; the Post it note read, Greg, Triangle, Harbor 8:30. At 8:17 she wrecks and shortly after Death takes her to the Harbor as requested. She meets Victor (for him it's the first time) and is perplexed how he knew her. Well, Greg talks about her a lot. Vic then says, "Come on, you're late." So it's about 9am. They board the Triangle and Jess falls right asleep. When she awakes, Heathers says she's been asleep for a couple of hours. It's now 11:00 The flirting chit chat, Sally's kind words, the distress call and storm take about a half hour. They die at 11:30. All but Heather. Also, Jess never intended to go to the Harbor. I think she died in the car wreck for sure and the 8:17 time(when she hit her son) is seen in the ship because it’s the ultimate guilt her mind is reliving in her time loop. Her time loop is essentially hell for her so the reminder of when she hit her son would be torturous especially because it was such a fresh memory right before she killed her son in the car wreck. Fascinating film. Great breakdown

Awesome breakdown, one scene you didn't mention that I loved was the scene with the record player. She finds the record player skipping, continuously playing the same loop of the song "Anchors Aweigh" by Glenn Miller. Instead of moving the needle past the faulty groove like most people would to finish the song, she starts it back at the beginning of the record, turns to the mirror and finally looks at a clear image of herself. The camera zooms in and enters the mirror world. We then see the next group arrive, but in mirror image form, as they pull up on the other side of the ship. I think mirrors are a big part of the movie too. The director gives us clues to the plot by showing multiple mirrors at once or cracked images on the ship. And everytime Jess looks at a mirror she understands her situation a little bit more. When she finally gets back to her house after murdering who knows how many people at this point, we see the full scenes from the beginning of the movie in proper context and how she really abuses her son too. Finally, the Jess she kills in the house sees her through the mirror before she is beaten to death.

@@fresh-avocado That is another aspect of that Jess coming from the "other side of Jess." Every Jess who boards on "the opposite side" (opposite of Our Jess), after the mirror scene, becomes the mean, bloody masked shooter Jess. @@ricnosky Yes, but, Jess isn't injured because she survived the crash, it's because she is already dead. That Jess, "Our Jess" is caught in a loop. What we see strewn out across the street is a depiction of what it looked like the day the "Real Jess" killed herself and her son. Sundress Jess is the closest representation of the real Jess in the afterlife; or purgatory. The day she died she would not have had paint on her dress, because events could not have happened, but the paint is solidify that it is indeed Sundress Jess on the street and not Our Jess.

The taxi driver is supposed to be Death, I believe. That's why he's clad in all black and acts like he's been there before. Either that, or he's like the Ferryman who takes the deceased across the River Styx. He even tells her "there's no point in trying to save the boy," telling her that she needs to accept her fate, but she refuses to go with him to where she belongs. She chooses to return to her loop. She promised Death she would return-- as in, come back to accept her fate-- but she never does.

It's the best explanation I've seen so far and the least complicated of them all, thank you!!! It's not 8-17 on the clock at home though, it's 7-15. And 8-17 is the time when the car crash happened and that's when Tommy died, Jess didn't kill him on purpose, as some think. She's depicted here as a caring mother who sometimes loses her temper (which can be understood as her life is far from perfect) and she then feels guilty, but not a murderer of her own son who's "her whole world"

This is fantastically made! You really laid it out as clearly as it could possibly be. I had always thought that somehow the same Jess was experiencing all "four" iterations of the loop (survivor in the "left" and "right" loops, based on the side of the boat they board, and gunman in the "left" and "right" loop), but I think it's clear now that the "left" Jess's are who we see and follow in the movie, and the "right" Jess's are always spared in the dining room by the "left" Jess, run and hide, eventually kill the "left" killer, and then go insane and somehow determine that she has to kill everyone and becomes the "left" killer herself, before ultimately dying. To me, this begs the question of if the "right" Jess we follow at the end then becomes a "left" Jess in the next iteration when she loses her memory, fated to die as she goes through the "right" loop? Or is she always on the "left" side, with the "right" Jess's just being a consequence and eventual obstacle for her actions? If so, I wonder why the "right" Jess's are "exempt" from their eternal punishment? What would dying even look like for that Jess, if this is her Hell. The fact that the ship is only mirrored when it approaches though also throws me off. Like shouldn't everything that occurs with those "right" side characters just occur on the right side of the ship? Or maybe that mirroring was just a visual indicator purely for our benefit when they actually arrive on the same side every time? And also I think it would be cool to see the "right" Jess's full journey from almost being killed by her double to turning into a stone cold killer. I guess the implication is that she stayed in hiding and slowly went insane, but I wonder how she arrives to the conclusion that she needs to kill everyone to escape?

This explanation is very well done, I think the "other Jess" is more evil representing a split off from the original Jess. That is, the evil side of Jess got sent to the intersecting time loop and the Jess who we follow during the movie has become an artificial "good Jess". This split happened when Jess bumped into the record player, as we can see a time glitch right then and It's precisely when the other capsized boat arrives (on the opposite side of the ship). We also have the mirrors that serve to reinforce this splitting of Jess into two. And indeed the alternating scenario with the other Jess (who seems to behave in a more evil and violent way, thus varying the events on the ship) is what actually causes the loop to repeat. Thus Jess continually gets fooled into believing that she can change things the next time around. Of course the storm wipes her memory and thus she doesn't realize the split merely creates an alternating but otherwise invariable sequence. But it also means there is no true Sysiphean suffering. Perhaps there is a better mechanism that could have made it so.

@@mehmet.6553 Not true. Good Jess never does that, she gets pushed overboard by Good Jess #2. I think the split of Jess originally occurred when she killed her son, and the Evil Jess is on a different timeline that we don't ever see except when she is killing people on the ship. When Jess backs into the record player and makes it skip, that causes the two timelines to intersect and makes it so that the two Jess's will keep repeating the same sequence for infinity and beyond.

The Jess that goes back, Jess 3, “Our Jess” will never become the Jess who is hacked and thrown overboard. That Jess will always arrive while our Jess is already on board. She comes from “the other side” of the real Jess. If you follow the corse of events as we follow our Jess through all four phases, one land, three on the ship, it’s impossible for that Jess, Jess 2,4,6 etc. and Sundress Jess to ever become our Jess.
@Nerdlabor
@Nerdlabor 2 жыл бұрын
@@perripierre9295 Why can't "our" Jess 3 become the Jess that is killed. In the end of the movie Jess 3 goes again on the ship and in the end this Jess 3 is killed. When Jess 3 arrives again she is Jess 4 that kills Jess 2 and will be killed by the next Jess 4. Jess 3 fights Jess 1 (that falls into the water), Jess 3 sees Jess 4 and points her gun at her. Jess 4 later kills Jess 2. Jess 5 fights Jess 3 that is thrown overboard. So Jess 3 awakes on the beach while Jess 6 arrives and later kills Jess 4. The question is if there are two "land" phases. So will Jess 3 arrive as Jess 7 (in this case she indeed can't become a Jess that is killed) or does she awake on the beach as Jess 8 while Jess 7 makes a contract with the death to go again on the boat. So there can be "two" land Jesses. One befor and one after the car accident. So Jess 3 can become Jess 8 that is killed.

I just saw this movie finally last weekend. Thanks for the really well done explanation. What I still don't get is how Jess 3 doesn't remember what Jess 5 will do, since to Jess 3, that couldn't have been that long ago. And yes, I get that Jess 3's memory "resets" for whatever reason when she goes back to the harbor, but on the boat, there isn't anything to suggest that her memory resets again. And yes, I know that she never saw who was under the hood, but surely it would have clicked when Jess 3 puts on the hood herself and does the shooting in the theater that the hooded person was her? There seems to be no reason that Jess 3 should lose in a fight to Jess 5 because Jess 3 should know exactly what Jess 5 will do, but everything still happens the exact same way despite that knowledge. Also, why does Jess 3 need to rewrite the message in blood in the room? Shouldn't it still be there from the last time? I don't recall anyone cleaning it? And LMAO, why do people just listen to a message written in blood in the first place? It was a fun movie, but I don't think these plot holes can be resolved.

That was great. A sublime movie. But with all the dead Sally's on top of the boat, we can say that this loop was done far more times than 4-5. So Jess 1 is probably more `first odd number Jess' we see in the movie? Or she is one based on the fact that we see Jess 3 perspective all through the movie. But it probably ain't jess 3 either. More like Jess 300. But the loops are well explained and can be repeated indefinitely so it still works.

@@LondonCityGirl Absolutely loved both this video explanation of Triangle, and the video you did for Primer. Extremely well done! Your voice is well suited for this content. If you haven't already seen it, I would also recommend "Mine Games" (2012), as it has a very similar plot outline; following from a single "protagonist" perspective of slowly realizing and attempting to "break the cycle" of a loop they find themselves caught it. Would love to see your perspective on that film. Thanks for your great videos!

She crashed before she got to the boat, so did she die first on the boat and then die the second time round in the car on the way ? Are her friends suffering a real reality or is it just her imagining them there? Because I can’t understand why they would all be in her loop, if she never made it to the group in the first place then they wouldn’t be in her loop .. so she died at the beginning on the small boat with her friends?

good explanation of the illustration of events, but you could explain the movies mystery with unsure what will happend after that, here is why : jess last( with scar) is last jess on the boat I think or something like that, then going out of this loop so she wakes up at a hospital or she dies after car crash (jess last or something with scar, last time she wants to change it all with changing her clothes with other her), then new loop or end of loop. where she can wake up from coma if they want that btw, and that way it can be a new loop or she can try to explain that to ppl or not, either way it will be showing it was a time loop. we saw differnet things happening, like crowbar instead of an axe at : 1hour and 6min, her with a scar, her killing that guy in the room, her now remembering when stepping on the boat and I think it was one more thing but cannot remember right now.

@The04prasanga
@The04prasanga 2 жыл бұрын
Best explanation. Only one plot hole found. Jess 03 killed Victor 03. Then jess 03 tried to save Victor 04 and there is a scene that Jess 03, jess 04 and Victor 04 at the same time in the dining room where jess 03 pointing a gun to jess 04 but didn't shoot and jess 04 ran away. But what happened to Victor 04 and how did he got killed. So what happened to even number Victors ((V02, V04 and V06...) and how they killed and what happened to them is not known. In movie we saw Greg 03 death and Greg 05 death. But we didn't see Greg 04 death. So we can assume greg 04 was shot dead by previous even number jess which means Jess 02 and loop continues. So whether it is even number or odd number the events experienced by all Gregs are same. But all other odd Characters experience different things to there counterpart even number Characters. We saw that bodies of the Greg 05, Sally 05 and Downy 05 were dragged to corner by Jess 03 and we can assume body of Greg 04 would have been dragged by Jess 02 which is not shown in the movie. The only plot hole is with victors. Odd number victors are dead by same odd number jess in dining room and we didn't see who cleared the odd number victor's body from dining room. Victor 03 body was not there in dining room when group 04 arrived and Jess 03 didn't do it. Also what happened to Even number victors is another mystery. Only explanation is all even number and odd number victor's bodies might have been cleared by the same even number jess. Then no plot holes. Excellent movie this is. One more thing to mention is all odd number groups enter the ship from left sides (that is a odd number group we followed from the beginning of the movie) and all even number groups enter the ship from its right side

I think she probably died twice. One in the car crash where she cheats death (The taxi driver) into releasing her so she can return to be with her son but goes sailing instead. She dies again when the Triangle capsizes in a storm and dying the second time after cheating death she is cursed into the Aeolus loop.

Maybe I'm a bit dumb, but I still didn't get why she had to kill her friends, I mean is it a paradox or something? When she began to kill her friends at the beginning of the first ship "visit" how she could get to the conclusion that killing her friends should stop the time loop if not for the previous experiences in killing, I'm so confused!

She realises that when all the members of a group die a new group appear. So when Jess 3 becomes killer Jess she decides to kill all of group 5 so that she can try and get on the upturned boat with group 6 when they appear.
