I remember reading someplace that, when Judy was struggling to show up for production on Summer Stock, Gene remained patient and always willing to work around whatever problems Judy may have had. He said (to someone else involved in producing Summer Stock) something to the avail of “I don’t care if I have to wait years for her to show up, I’m not giving up on her”. That was how much he cared for and understood Judy. I like to think there was a lot of love between them, even if they never were truly romantically involved. Although I do think they would have been wonderful together.
