Bilk married his childhood sweetheart, Jean Hawkins, whom he met in the same class at school. The couple had two children: Jenny and Pete. After living near London in Potters Bar for many years the couple retired to Pensford.
In 1997, Bilk was diagnosed with throat cancer, which was treated through surgery and then followed by daily radiation therapy at Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre. Subsequently, he had eight keyhole operations for bladder cancer and suffered a minor stroke.

The world owes Mr Bilk a gratitude of immeasurable proportions. Such an unassuming soul who obviously enjoyed his music as much as we did listening to him play. I have a hunch he's entertaining those lucky souls who are with him up there somewhere. Thanks, Mr Bilk!

This is so lovely thank you! I was there yesterday Ack and Jean were my aunt and uncle. We had spent the day with cousin Jenny. Jenny being the inspiration for the tune that was then of course renamed. Once again thank you for lovely comments.

Went here today 2/5/2022 to visit this legends resting place and have a photo taken at the head of his stone, i also thanked him for his wonderful music he gave us. I was visiting a friend who lives less than 2 mins from All Saints Church, its stunningly beautiful. R.I.P Acker Bilk

There is also a bench in the village commemorating Acker, next to a very interesting 19th century lock up.

Another beautiful tribute buddy. I remember this artist from many years ago and stranger on the shore was my favourite too. Oh the memories. Clear sign we are getting old but with grace eh. Thank you for this lovely heart touching tribute.😉👍👍👍👍👍

Stranger on the shore has the second longest long on the British charts in its history (55 weeks), didn't quite make it to number 1 but was probably the best record that never did, R.I.P. Acker :)
