I am floored by the obstacles this man over came. Understand how dam had it is to become a navy diver let alone master diver regardless of who you are. If that wasn't dam near impossible add in all those who stood in his way due to racial ignorance at that time. To me the Black Americans who pushed all that shit aside and bulldozed their way to success are all truly heros. All of those whom I've met are not bitter over it in the least, I find that truly amazing. I can't imagine after having gone to war and upon my return having one of my brothers be told you can't sit in this bar and have a beer after fighting for this nation. By God if any of my men had been told that today we'd have taken the dam place apart. Seems so dam absurd cause trust me when the bullets start flying and it dawns on you these fuckers are really trying to kill you and your soliders (your family, your brothers) you do not give a dam what color he is only that he's there watching your 6 just as you watch his. History has proven Black American soliders are a force to be reckoned with and God bless'em.

Well, I guess there is something else to say: I don't think enough words, or the right ones, can truly define Carl Brashear's character. There was no "black card" to hide behind, no "I've been cheated, so you all owe me something":. Just guts, so that even the biggotts and his enemies eventually respected him. Great story, and a great movie. Best Cuba Gooding Jr performance, and one of the best Robert Deniro roles,in my opinion. Okay; now enough said on my end.

Watchyertopknot AhhhGrizz You are an absolute fool. If you watched the movie or at least read anything about Carl Brashear you'd have realized racism was/is real as it is then and now. Thereby racism is not a card to be played, it is a real deterrent, it is the truth. A lot of times Blacks are not given the very same opportunities as whites as testament to this man's life. But he was a fighter made by God. This was a very special extraordinary Black man with an iron will determination to fight the system of discrimination. Thus not all, whether Black or white, are naturally blessed or equipped do what he did and live to tell it.
@WatchyertopknowAhhhGrizz1964
@WatchyertopknowAhhhGrizz1964 7 жыл бұрын
and I would have to say, in turn, that you are in absolute denial and, unfortunately, terribly misinformed and ignorant not only about history, but current affairs as well. The "card" is altogether real today, evidenced by Affirmative Action; I've experienced it personally. Trying to put words in my mouth doesn't give you much credence, because my prior post acknowledged that Brashear had the sheer guts to overcome predjudice that biggots and his enemies levied against him. He didn't, COULDN'T acheive his goals on the merit of the color of his skin...he was just an amazing, gutsy guy that would't quit... a man of HONOR. I stand by my post,and choose to be a "fool". And yes,he was a legend by the time I served in the Navy. This movie is one of my favorite movies of all time; I watch it time and time again, especially as an edifying alternative to the crap that's going on today in media.
@gidgethrobowski3860
@gidgethrobowski3860 7 жыл бұрын
Watchyertopknot AhhhGrizz Did you know white women, considered a protective group, benefit from affirmative action more than any Black or person of color. No, you didn't because you are ignorant to facts. I am a realist if anything, denial is not admitting that racism exists. History gives evidence of present racism. Yes, Mr. Brashear, succeeded, no doubt. But racism within his life was just as big as the story of his success. I don't why white people like you don't like hearing the truth. There would have been a lot more Carl Brashears' if racism wasn't always a factor. This type of racism is within a system.

To hear this American hero’s story just gives you chills. To not give up when so many times when many would have and should have he kept going. Years he fought not hours days or weeks years. It truly shows what a person is capable of doing if they truly put forth the effort. I wouldn’t have made it past the first denial letter. He is what every man should inspire to be.
