I love how Ezio’s motivations shift throughout the trilogy, reflecting the range of motivations that guide the Assassins as a whole. So many Assassins joined the cause because they have been wronged or hurt by the Templars in some way, and by the time of Origins we know the Brotherhood was literally born that way. Then, with Brotherhood, comes a strong sense of duty and of devotion to… well, the Brotherhood: like Ezio in his Rome period, the Assassins also fight because of their faith and trust in each other. Unlike the coldly ordered Templars, who are organized in a military chain of command, the Assassins are all brothers and sisters to each other, and that is just as important as the cause they fight for. Because, in a way, that IS the cause they fight for. They believe humanity can be trusted with its own freedom, so of course they have to begin by trusting each other. And finally, with Revelations, comes the last and deepest layer: love. By meeting Sofia, who basically represents all the beauty, the kindness, the enthusiasm, the curiosity, again the LOVE that the Templars would sweep away in the name of their perfect order, Ezio is reminded that, although they have no choice but to use brutal methods like killing, the Assassins’ ultimate goal is a world in which human beings may become wise enough to no longer WANT to brutalize, kill, deceive or rule over each other.
