Babbington Colliery 1841 to 1986, also known as Cinderhill Colliery, was a coal mine in Cinderhill, Nottinghamshire, England. The mine opened in 1841, and was the first large-scale coal mine in the county. It took its name from its original owner, the Babbington Coal Company, founded in 1839 to work shallow mines near Babbington, a hamlet some 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to the west of the later colliery. Babbington Colliery had a long life, and did not close until 1986.
The site is now the location of a business park, and the Phoenix Park tram terminus of the Nottingham Express Transit. It lies within the current boundaries of the City of Nottingham.
The colliery was linked to the railway network by the Cinderhill Colliery Railway, part of which is now used by the Phoenix Park branch of the Nottingham Express Transit.

I remember walking by there with my grandma as a child and seeing that strange van parked in the entrance to the pit several times.

When I left school in 1967 in Sunderland the 2 places you could get a good apprenticeship were in the shipyards or with the ncb ,no chance now ,all gone ,hopeless ,useless futility now of a service sector economy ,so sad that a world wide pandemic has shown the inherent weakness of uk economy ,ghastly loss of life and sadness for millions ,however as one commentator for coal board said when labour in the late 60’s authorised the probability of opening a nuclear power station on the north east coast ,,then the future of coal was already being decided, gosh 50 years later it still makes me angry that we do not have a real manufacturing economy ,look what’s gone chemicals ,steel plants rail manufacturing and my old trade footwear manufacturing, bonkers, crazy but most of all sad!

Totally agree my friend. I worked in the Notts/Derbyshire coalfields. All have disappeared as has the hearts of these communities. So sad, breaks my heart to see people struggling. Broken Britain!!
