Tribute to the Rascals

This is a tribute to one of the most influential rock and roll bands ever assembled, It includes their four appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show (1966-67) and their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Steven Van Zandt.
After a 42 year hiatus, the Rascals are once again touring in 2013 with the Van Zandt produced 'Once Upon A Dream' bio-concert.
All hail to brother Ed and the Rascals! ;-)

I loved the Rascals back in the day. They never had a bad song, and most of their songs were the best! And Felix has maybe the best blue-eyed soul voice ever!

Growing up in Lodi, NJ I was 10 years old and living in downtown Lodi where urban renewal was taking place in the sixties. Most of the stores on Main St. were empty and directly across the street, there was what we called The Candy Store. So one day for about a week, The Young Rascals, later just THE RASCALS, rented that store to rehearse for their appearance on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW maybe 10 miles across the Hudson in NYC. I used to sit in the doorwell and listen for hours. After that, not far away, in Garfied, NJ they performed many shows at a place next to the ERIE RR called THE CHOOCHOO CLUB, where we would sit outside and listen. Good times for us young kids. Another group that played gigs in Lodi were Frankie Vali and The Four Seasons at a club I cant remember the name of. We would hang outside by the dumpsters and listen. The greatest free entertainment ever.

Great story and free music is a gift for sure. I saw Jimi Hendrix at the Orange Show in Southern California in April 1970; he died in Sept of that same year. So right place, right time for both of us. I'm surprised that It's a Beautiful Morning wasn't a part of the repertoire for this video. I listen to it regularly to start my day, especially in the winter when I get the blues. It helps me reset my thinking about the weather and be glad I'm alive.

Without question. Also, as a black guy in his 60's, I can vouch for the idea that these were the "blackest" white group ever! In a time when a lot of music was stratified racially (especially in the South), The Rascals were played on black radio along with Motown, Stax and other label artists. Other like artists of the day were the Okaysions ("Im a Girl Watcher"), the Soul Survivors ("Expressway to Your Heart") and others. In fact they were the Average White Band of their day. Main songs? Groovin', It's a Beautiful Morning, Good Loving, How Can I Be Sure and others. In the long summers back then, these songs would blare over the loudspeakers at the city park where we played Little League and Pony League baseball. Listening to the music takes me back to then. What a talented group of fellows.

@@fostermac7170 SPOT On Brother - I wasn't impressed by thier sound at the time but a friend of mine had a ticket to their Once upon a dream tour at one of the casinos in Connecticut many years later - I was blown away by the production and the energy and their talent as musicians - these guys were the Original Jersey Boys in fact it's only in listening to this right now that I can hear Smokey Robinson influences on the song Groove N - I also didn't realize it at that time but what did Sullivan have them on once a week? LMAO

I'm 59 years old, and grew up with their music. I used to blast their songs in my 1967 Chevy Camaro, while driving it around town where I lived. All of their music gives you a happy feeling listening to it! Younger people need to hear this fantastic music.... Keep the legacy alive! 😎👍🏻

I first saw these guys in 1966 when they were touring with Dick Clark's "Where the Action is", along with a bunch of other acts. The Young Rascals (as they were first named) were by far, the best of them all. I saw them several more times afterwards and their live shows were fantastic. I still own all the vinyl records that I bought new. Their generous spirits were real. At their show in Miami Beach in 1970 where they were raising funds for Danny Thomas' St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Danny told the audience that The Rascals (new name) had paid all of their own expenses and donated their pay to St. Jude's. They "walked the talk". Wonderful in every way.

@@beaucharles9934 The Knickerbockers were fantastic! I watched Dick Clark's show, "Where the Action Is" every afternoon after school. When I found all the groups were touring, I was able to see them live! Those were the days when all the kids appreciated ALL music, regardless of the groups' backgrounds and the music had positive messages. All love and no hate. Simple times. I still smile when I remember them.

The sad thing is, the newspapers did not mention this good deed the next day which was the "big" Sunday paper. However, the following week Led Zeppelin played in the same building (Convention Center in Miami Beach) and the crowd destroyed the place at the end of the concert. That made the newspapers. So sad. I remember wanting to see them but I was afraid to, for this very reason. It looked like I made the right call. @@esthergarcia1373

When I was 13 yo I learned "Good Lovin" on guitar and "I've been Lonely To Long" by the Rascals and started a high school band. It was Beatles and Rascal songs I enjoyed the most.

I was 16 and played the drums when I first saw Dino and the Rascals. I had other friends that played the drums in bands at the time and when we saw Dino with sticks flashing everywhere we knew right away we wanted to copy his style, but that was easier said than done. He was not only a great drummer but a great showman like his teacher Gene Krupa. He had those pink champagne Ludwig's with the 24" bass drum and he sat real low. I final got my prink champagne Ludwigs and sat real low but soon found out it wasn't as easy as Dino made it look. R.I.P Dino!

To me, Dino will always be a latter day Renaissance man. He was a most gifted, accomplished drummer in the stratosphere of Buddy Rich, yet he also was a gifted painter. None of us can live forever, but his passing breaks my heart.

I love the Rascals and saw this. I was going to watch just 2 or 3 minutes since it's pretty long, but it just pulled me in and I watched it all the way through. Absolutely great band, and Dino D was a monster!

Danelli is hands down the most unsung drummer in rock history! Dino is a one man drumming masterclass. A drummer's drummer. Watch some of 60's live footage to see just what I mean. The Rascals are Jersey's finest, now rightly inducted into the RRHOF.

Man, these guys can still play it today.....their instrumentation is the same, they haven't missed a beat, maybe their vocals are a bit weaker but let's face it they're around 70 years old. That Dino can still play those wicked drums, great tempo, hits those skins with authority and still can do those twirls, although a bit slower, but still a great, great drummer.

Got my butt spanked in study hall over the first song. Sneakily turned on the AM transistor radio (all the rage then) but no sound. Turned up volume more, heard the background stations faintly and realized too late that the local station was merely paused. Before I could thumb the volume back down, the entire hall reverberated with "GOOD LOVIN!!" --- I had entered the song at that pause after Felix's organ solo. Funny now --- wasn't then. :)

It's the Summer of '65. I've just graduated from high school and accepted to the college of my choice. Life was good. There was a club in the Hamptons--The Barge--where a hot new band from the City--The Young Rascals--were playing every night. Imagine that? Friday night you'd drive over to the Barge and sit within 10' of these guys??? Amazing. Great Summer. Great memories.

I was at the Hamptons in 65. The Rascals were playing at the Barge. On celebrities could get in. We had to go to another club that had the Vagrants, featuring a large guitarist named Leslie West!

Dino Danelli was a huge influence on me in my early years of playing the drums. There were others, but Dino was just an awesome player and showman and, his playing was so good along with the fact that his drumming was I/3rd of the band and was not pulled from the drum chair when the Rascals recorded as so many many other musicians were, so that is him on all the Rascals records. I saw him with The Young Rascals at Island Garden Arena, the Singer Bowl, Westbury Music Fair all on Long Island NY and around 1968. Then after the Rascals broke up, I saw him in a local club playing with Bulldog, after 1970. In 1992 I was i South Hampton NY and the New Rascals (Only Dino and Gene) were playing at a local bar in East Hampton with the New Birds with drummer Mike Clarke. Billy Joel who lived out at the Hamptons back then was also in the crowd with his then wife Christy Brinkley.

My favorite band-The Rascals! Felix Dino Gene Eddie. So glad I got to see them live at different venues back in the day. My favorite -The Action House on Long Island, NY. Small venue, small crowd, small stage-(about chest level) you were standing right against the stage only few feet away from the band! Dino R.I.P. Condolences to his family and friends.

I know this is 1997-25 years ago-but they’re singing all these songs in the original keys. I know, cuz every band I was in as a kid covered them. Not like The Rascals, not even close! The Rascals were a template for so many bands in the mid-late ‘60s, especially those of us who loved Soul Music. They showed us a way to successfully cover the great Black Music of the day with a small band. At their induction to the RRHOF, they are almost 30 years past their recording prime and still hitting those notes. What a band they were. RIP, Dino Danelli, a powerhouse drummer. He gave the rock to The Rascals’ roll.

All to often the death of a musician comes across the news so I search the name and play the songs. I am instantly pulled back to a time I euphorically recall were happier times of my life. First there is a smile on my face remembering the good times then a tear as I realize the person who brought me the joy of their music is gone. Memories of my life are linked to music. I can remember the year , the day , the girl, that a song brings back to life as if it were yesterday. I just finished listening to " The young rascals" because Dino Danelli died and WOW does that hit me hard. I loved that guys music. It is always sad learning of the death of anyone. I find it mystifying the death of a total stranger can affect me so much. How is it possible to hold an emotional attachment to someone I've never meet? Music moves the soul ; Barry Manilow

Very well expressed. Same. Total stranger yet hard to reconcile he is not in the world anymore. Like a family member, it's going to take some time to get used to his not "being in the world" among us. I watch his videos every day since and tear up and I'm an old broad, grandmother aged. He touched a personal "nerve" among us taking with him a part of our youth. Whatever is beyond the veil, I hope he feels the love and admiration from over here, knows that he lived a "life well lived" plus more; a legacy which will live forever. It's ironic that he was the first Rascal to go. Not him. Not Dino. Yet, it's true.

Thanks John for this awesome video. Always knew how fantastic Dino was. Hendrix wanted him but he turned him down. But I never thought he was the best rock and rock and roll drummer of all time. Till Steve said it and then I thought about it. He's probably right. He played with so much authority, power, skill. A feel that nobody topped. This band could have been called Cream because they were the cream of the crop. They were musically a trio. You never felt a lack in their sound. Carry Me Back is one of my favorite songs of all time. If anyone doesn't know the song, you can hear it from the record and also here at Live on KZfaq. Just fantastic. Whenthe British were kicking our butts back in the sixties, it was Gary Lewis, The Beach Boys, and The Rascals holding the fort. These guys are the old time real deal.

I remember them well because they were mostly from my town of Garfield NJ and I hung out with and went to HS with EDDIE, so I am very proud to have known them all But Eddie is my Favorite one in the band!

There’s a circle of bands I always come back to. The Rascals, as known now, is high on the list. The Young Rascals were dare I say, better than a lot of groups coming out of Europe, at the time. So bad ass.

Wonderful...I didn't realize the sparse instruments they did all that wonderful music with...essentially a guitar and a keyboard way before these instruments became full orchestras in themselves...wonderful...

I had the pleasure of seeing Felix A few years back at the Dakota In mpls mn while performing he would talk about his songs and they came to be Sunday mourning was about making love On the beach in Hawaii on a Sunday morning it was an excellent show

Whoever connected all this film clips together, we young rascals fans are very grateful!!!! I have about 2000 PCs of old long playing albums of the 50s mostly 60s n 70 s and part 80s. The young rascals are among my top ten best group of the sixties! Thier music is mesmerizing you will keep on dancing! Groovin has been used in some hollywood movies!!!! Grew up with the Rascals. I was a vocalist in cover bands back then and we did many Rascal covers. Mickey's Monkey was one of my favorite.

That's Eddie Brigati. Felix (Cavaliere) tells the story that Eddie would sneak into clubs as a kid and sing onstage with local bands with that amazing voice. Felix told him "one day you're going to be in a band with me".

I can't say that The Rascals were the best band of the 60s, but they are my very favorite (along with the Bee Gees). The Rascals are the soundtrack of my youth and adult years. Still, and especially, relevant in this pandemic. Love, loss, uncertainty, liberation, peace and joy---all embraced with the genius of their music. (Eddie was, and still is, my heart.) Thanks for this great homage.

Hard Hiters! Like the 4 Seasons..they both are Jersey boys & from the Newark area & had that tuch of rhythm in their step of music! We rock back then.
