In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you one of the trickiest chess openings for Black, which is universal as it works against both 1.e4 and 1.d4 by White.
It’s called the O'Sullivan Gambit from the Alekhine’s Defense which happens after the first moves: 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 b5. It can also be transposed if White plays 1.d4 and then 1...b5 2.e4 Nf6 3.e5 Nd5.
This gambit is so tricky that White loses in just 6-8 moves in the most common variations. It sets a trap almost every move and even top-rated players fall for these traps; yes, it works even against 2500+ players!

I think then your knight can just take c3. And if they then retake your knight, then you take the bishop with your Queen. So then you’re up the exchange a bishop for a pawn.

In the line that you talk about at 4:57 where white reinforces the center with c3 and we play cxd4, what do you suggest if our opponent plays Qxd4 instead of cxd4 I looked at it in the database and it looks like maybe Qc7 followed by bb7 if they play Qxd5? Thoughts?

Pb5 doesn't necessarily stop Pc4 by white as he says in video. If pxp by black, then simply BxP by white, developing a piece.

I've been using Russeau for quite a while and it works somewhat well, although there are some nasty downsides. Might I try this one? It seems that white is going to knight out very often instead of pushing forward...

I have the same reaction as well with white often knight to c3 which makes this set up not work so well. But I'm also very low rank so that may have an impact as well

Ive been trying this. When they play d4 i offer the knight pawn. They take it and i go on to win. However, most of the time they play c4 instead.

1600 player so getting opponents in that range - I've tried this twice now and weirdly both times it's been 1.e4-Nf6 2. e5-Nd5 3. Bc4 Not sure how to respond I've played Nb6 and just played chess but curious if that 3rd move breaks the trap or if there are any ways to keep the themes going

Very trappy line. With the e4 opening, 1 question I have Is what if white plays 6. Nc3 after 5...Qa5? This still blocks the check and protects whites bishop on b5. Or am I missing something else?

These kinds of traps, although a lot of fun, rely on opponent's blunders. Pc3 and Qxd4 give white a fine position. Before trying these things, you need a plan for when they fail.

I bet your cat would totally approve of my "Zeller Ice Queen" (in the blackmar diemer gambit) as the "main line" is about 3 points bad for white, but is a rare line with around 70% chances in every other line. an online troll griped that it's "unsound", parroting the old GM talking point, but any time you're winning 70% or more of your games, the word unsound doesn't apply. gambiteers like risk and i'm so glad i stumbled on this as I was having a hard time trying to find a repertoire against 1.d4 to go with the albin (few gambits) and with indian/benko, but THIS, like the rousseau which this kings gambiteer so wants to get rid of the scandinavian for, looks like just what i need to stop effing stonewalling. i hate pawns in the way even if the stonewall is very playable if you don't mind 50+ move games. thanks for sharing, i'm cobbling a book out of this video and lichess right now. the carnage in the MAIN LINES is awesome! i'll put up with 1 in 20 painful losing games for 19 fun ones any day! BTW i'm NEVER playing the alekhine! i hate hypermodern everything! this looks better as a 1.d4 repertoire that can't be side stepped

I'd guess you just drop your Queen back to a6, still protecting Bishop so it maintains the threat on White's Queen though from there cannot be attacked again by any pieces, forcing their Queen to move enabling the g2 pawn/h1 Rook skewer, and still able to move in to f1.

It's a cool trap but I feel even weak players can sense it's a bad move (the bishop takes the free pawn). Common knowledge that your bishop will just get kicked next move (at minimum), and potential for complications early. Maybe blitz chess this could be a common mistake tho.

I hardly ever (1 or 2 in 100) see a two pawn move opening by white (playing ten minute games at 1000). So sadly, I doubt I will ever be able to use this. Thanks anyway.

Practice solid opening habits and crush your opponents for not playing properly then. At 1000, traps are less necessary than practicing spotting poor moves than can be taken advantage of . Advantages come from material, position and time. Space and controlling the center. Development of pieces. Planning attacks that don’t compromise your defense and making a solid position *before* attacking. Good luck, youll get there!

The most common move on the lichess database is e5 (played over 40% of the time) and played over half the time in non-bullet games rated over 1400.

@@divided_and_conquered1854 Just over half of the games played at a rating of above 1400 on the lichess database that have a time control of rapid or longer played e5. The reason why it’s the most played move is because it is the best - it takes more central space with tempo, and stockfish 14 NNUE gives white a +0.7 advantage at depth 45. If you want to see the popularity of each move in different openings, you can just use the book on the lichess analysis board (you can also adjust the rating ranges the moves come from, and the time controls).

He mentions a name at 4:36, not clearly, but I eventually figured out he said "O'Sullivan Gambit." After 1. d4 the general opening is called the A40 Polish Defense in my source.
