There's an orange grove behind my apartment and I've watched the beekeepers set out boxes with bees. Let me tell you that the orange blossom honey is the absolute best. There are also cactus along the fence line and the people who pick the fruit cut down the cactus to take home to eat. I find the whole process very interesting. I enjoyed hearing first hand you and Mark breaking the process down for everyone to better understand

Good Afternoon Hamm Family ❤️ Bees... hmmm... I have a love-hate relationship with bees. I love watching them at work collecting nectar, their importance to our environment, and the delicious honey they provide. I hate the memory, at age 10 or 11, when I accidentally ran into a natural hive while playing hide n seek with friends. So many stings. So much pain. A trip to the ER, but luckily not being allergic. The cats love watching them from the window, chattering up a storm; while Maggie has yet to learn that catching a bee in her mouth is painful and results in a swollen snoot and mouth, and a long Benadryl nap 🐝 We thought about raising bees, but decided against it. We have so many apiaries, and a beekeeping school, in our area and a co-op that carries local honey. We get our honey from an apiary up the road (mostly) and the co-op... delicious... and great for my allergies and for immune support. I love my honey both in its traditional syrupy form and the creamier form... and don't forget the honeycomb... a nice little treat. A piece of toasted bread, a little butter and a generous amount of honey is good for the taste-buds and the mood🍯 Love seeing all the work smarter not harder mindset and dedication preparing for the new arrival. Lots of busy bee work from you and the Alaska Boys proves you're all up to the task, including getting an area cleared out... big difference from the pix. Awesome job by you all 💪 Weston looks like he may have a new interest. So inquisitive and happy to lend a hand and make sure the bees are happy and content 😊 Thank you, Mark, for the lesson on bees and beekeeping; so informative. It's interesting to see and hear about how much work is involved in having a successful harvest... both by the bees and the beekeeper. As always, thank you, Lauren, for sharing another family adventure. The two of you are too cute together... like kids in a candy jar, but instead it's the honey jar. And, please Mark, no silly Dad jokes about bees 😁 Have a blessed and happy day. Yah's Blessings 🤗 P.S.: I'd love some of your honey harvest. Mmmm 😋

Bee's are amazing creatures, my daughter absolutely loves them, grows wildflowers every year so the Bee's have food sources, since she found out they endangered! She asked me since she watched this video with me, if you guys feel guilty knowing that so many Bee's die cause of Alaska cold weather, knowing you choose to bring them there and it not there normal home? Love your families positive attitude with the compact snow!

Hi Sarah. I am glad you enjoyed the video with your daughter. We do our best to keep the bees a live over the winter but its not a guarantee, even with the best beekeepers. We feel sad when they don't survive but we know that bees die even in perfect conditions of California. It's still always sad when a whole hive dies at once.

I live in Southern California and just got into bee keeping. I picked up my first set of bees about two weeks ago and I paid 180 for my set (10,000) bees. So far all has gone well and I am enjoying them. The bees are very friendly haven’t had any issues yet. I was told not to harvest any honey the first year. I find it interesting you will be harvesting your honey in August and being that you’ve done this before have taken classes I am wondering why we are told not to harvest until the fellowing year ?🤷🏻‍♀️
@ThisAlaskaLife
@ThisAlaskaLife Жыл бұрын
The first year in Alaska we got barely anything and then were not ready to winter them over so we harvested the honey. They may need that honey to survive and continue to build up the hive. Beekeeping in AK has it's own set of rules!!

@@ThisAlaskaLife that is so true! My grandson is stationed there and lives in your town so I asked about the pizza after seeing you and your son out on the town and he had been to one of them with his dad, our son! This is fun to watch! Thank you

Great video! Very fascinating to learn so much about honey bees..silly question, do you encounter problems with bee poo on your cars? We had keepers near us once & all the cars in our neighborhood were getting poo'd on and it was hard to scrub off...I heard it can be bad for the paint.

That is an interesting question. I don't remember having them poop on our cars but I could see how that could be a problem if there were a lot of hives. I will keep an eye out this year.

Set your hard honey jar in a pan of warm water on the stove and it will in time look like the syrup again.

Try putting an electric fence wire around your boxes to keep bear from destruction

Wd it be helpful to have the boxes in a dog run? I don’t know anything about bears but wd it be protection? And chain link wd allow the Beas a way to come and go.
@ThisAlaskaLife
@ThisAlaskaLife Жыл бұрын
That is an idea! We used to have a dog run for our chickens but that has been many years. A little bear fence and some straps should do the trick.

So every year you have to reorder your entire everything?? There isn’t a way to maintain a small population in a 5 frame hive in a small barn and overwinter them?

So do you have to get new bees every year or how long do they last?

Wow,that was a great video,I learned a lot about these amazing creatures.I have a question for you or Mark,If the queen dies ,does the whole colony die? Thanks ,Hi from Ontario🇨🇦🍯🇺🇸
@ThisAlaskaLife

If the queen dies and there is a new queen forming we will let it hatch, but that takes some time. We have had a queen die in the past and were thankfully able to buy a new queen and put it in the box.

After you harvest the honey do the Bees die or do they live on??

We can feed them honey and try to winter them over, but it is not a guarantee they will live. We do our best to winter them over.

How long do the bees live?
@ThisAlaskaLife
@ThisAlaskaLife Жыл бұрын
That is a tricky question. A queen bee can live up to 5 years but typically 1-3 years. The spring bees worker bees live about 2-6 weeks. The Fall bees have to be tougher and can live up to 20 to get them through the winter. The drone ( boy bees) live up to 55 day. Probably more than you wanted to know but…there you have it.
