Trigonometric Functions of Any Angle

I introduce how to evaluate trig functions without knowing the actual angle measures. With just enough information to determine what quadrant an angle is in and set up the reference triangle, we can find any trigonometric ratio.
Check out www.ProfRobBob.com, there you will find my lessons organized by class/subject and then by topics within each class. Dude! It's amazing how you nail this in 15 minutes while most professors take the whole hour to explain it to the students. If I ever see you when I register for class, I will not hesitate to take. Plus, you're like the kind of professor I wouldn't be afraid to ask questions.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am taking College Trig online, and the modules consist of a powerpoint and video clips from Pearson. There's very little explanation, so when something doesn't click I get really stuck. This helped me make sense of things.

Hello, my name is Matthew and I attend Florida State College at Jacksonville. Your videos are fantastic and I advise all my classmates to watch your instructions the day before class. My professor rarely comes to class prepared, and as such you have effectively become my Pre-Cal and Trig w/ Limits professor. Without your help I would have been completely overwhelmed this semester. You have saved me money I would have otherwise spent on gas, tutoring, and perhaps even retaking this course. There are no words of thanks that seem sufficient. You have done for free what I cannot pay my professor to do; to care.
@profrobbob

And THANK YOU Matthew Cecil for taking the time to "Thank the Teacher" and send such an appreciative comment, I do love teaching, especially when the students are hungry to learn! You might even try starting a study group and all watch my videos and help each other together with the homework...we've had many students share that success. My wife and I always say "if we had all the tuition money that students told us I should have gotten, instead of the school, I could retire and make KZfaq videos fulltime" ! I never dreamed when I started this 465 videos and 2 1/2 years ago, that I would still be doing this in addition to my full-time teaching job. Our dream is to someday have over a million subscribers so you can help us fulfill that dream by continuing to spread the word about Tarrou's Chalk Talk. Tell them to Like and SUBSCRIBE, Like it on Facebook, Tweet about it, post it in your student tutoring center, share with the head of the math department...if every student these videos helped did the same we would see that "M" in no time:)...it's hard to make a math channel go viral...lol :D Thanks again for "making my day" with your comment and appreciation!

Your wife's seems like an idealist, like myself, but hopefully teachers are paid better in the future. I've read different reports on education detailing the private money being spent to control text books, adjunct professors hired on contracts to divert money outside of classrooms, and while the quality of public education seems to be diminishing the cost of it continues to rise. I believe in public education, make no mistake, but how you're teaching is closer to how I imagine the future of education. 564 videos is indeed impressive, and it wouldn't take an "army" of professors to teach an incredible number of students in the future. It amazes me how much you, as one person, can accomplish. It's inspiring. I see your video hit counts. You've taught ALOT of people for FREE. I've subscribed, and I'll continue to advise people to subscribe to Tarrou's Chalk Talk. It's the least I can do.

What can I say to a comment like that but...those are the words all teachers want to hear from their students when they are struggling. "Unacceptable" followed by the steps it takes to change things! We as teacher can only teach, you the students, have to take that knowledge and put it to work. I applaud you for your efforts to make that change and turn that C into an A. Keep watching and learning and please let me know about your continued successes:)

Reference angles are acute measures that tell you how many degrees are between the x axis and the terminal side. If your angle is say 200 degrees, the reference angle is 200-180. If your angle is 280 then 360 - 280...you compare your angle to 360 because you are in quadrant 4. If your angle is 20, the reference angle is 20 because your angle is already acute.

@pejonic1 The standard period of sine is 2pi. In both of your equation, which are not equal/the same graph, you have a 3 in front of the x. That is a transformation to the period. So your sine functions would have a period of (2pi)/3. I hope this helps.

Sorry for missing the question you posted. You may want to watch Evaluating Inverse Trigonometric Functions Full Length. I explain where the restricted range of values of come from for inverse trig functions. Basically inverse sine and inverse tangent functions have restricted ranges of -90 to 90, where inverse cosine is 0 to 180.

There are two ways of thinking about that. One is it is not possible for a length to be negative. This is true, but I like to put them on the sides of the reference triangles anyway. My students remember the signs when setting up their final trig ratios more often when I show the negative signs around the reference triangle. Second the negative would be cancelled anyway by the even powers of 2.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I was stuck with my geometry hw and my math teacher sent this video to help (online assignment) and this refreshed my memory soo much! I have to say I even understood better than my math teacher can clarify in person! I have to say I don't understand why we don't have math teachers like you. I wish my school would hire you to be the math teacher (no offense to the one I have). But anyways thanks again and may god bless your wonderful soul!

Sec is r/x. r is always positive and x is negative in quadrants 2,3. Since your constraint is 0 to pi your angle is in quadrant 2.

Thank you tremendously for all of your videos. Might I suggest one thing though... perhaps, in the video description, include links to tutorial videos for the content that usually precedes or follows what you're teaching. I'm taking an online math course and I typically just search on KZfaq to learn any new material, but realized I "missed a step" when finding this video (y/r, etc.) Thanks!
