Windows 8.1 was misunderstood just like Vista. I really love 8.1 because Microsoft NAILED both the desktop and tablet UI experience in one single OS and it was awesome. I never had a Windows tablet before unfortunately so I never managed to get the full tablet UI experience of 8.1, but even then with only mouse and keyboard the gestures were still really nice to use. Sadly 8.1, just like Vista, was ahead of it's time in 2012/2013 because Microsoft thought that tablets and touchscreens were already the future on PC but they were not so this is why this OS got so much hate, quite a shame. Meantime Windows 10 is just Microsoft trying to fix their "mistake" but failing miserably, resulting in an OS with an identity crisis Also the performance. Oh my god the performance on 8.1 are something magical, especially on older systems. I've a HP 630 and an ASUS X550EP both with respectively an i3-370M and an AMD A4-5000 and 8 and 12GB of RAM, Windows 10 feels like a brick due to how bloated it is on those systems, using a lot of RAM and CPU for no reason at all, while Windows 8.1 feels light, snappy and fast, using little to no CPU and just 1GB of RAM. Windows 8.1 is my third favourite Windows OS after XP and 7, but in terms of performance, 8.1 is the best Windows OS Microsoft has ever made
@luperteverett12713 жыл бұрын
Gonna agree and disagree with you on there. Imo, what made Windows 8(.1) fail ultimately was MS trying to shoehorn the tablet UI to the people who have better not use it in the first place, ultimately resulting in a degraded desktop experience (lack of start menu, removed options from control panel, etc.) while everything would be much better if they separated both experiences from the very beginning. Whereas Win10 tried to tip the scale to the other side, to varying results. It truly looks like it is having an identity crisis, with its inconsistent styling *everywhere*, and the stuff that's been said in the video. To simply put: Win8: Awful idea, great execution. Win10: Great idea, meh execution.

Unlike vista, both 8 and 8.1 were pretty god damn lightweight, way more than windows 10. Windows Vista was a little too ahead of its time in that department though, as it ran horribly on machines that just werent made to run it. Vista was definitely a lot better than many other Windows versions though, by its end of life it was very stable, and by MILES the most secure Windows version compared to things like XP and 2000 before it.

@chlorobyte_projects3 жыл бұрын
My perspective of Linux is from an Arch derivative, so I am running the latest of software, but I find that with Wine, Windows software (including games and other programs) is generally well supported, with some exceptions of course. And it just gets better and better over time - I wonder just how much progress will be made by the time Windows 8.1 reaches EOL in 2023 and people will be "forced" to switch. (I say "forced", because EOL doesn't necessarily mean that you *have* to immediately replace the OS, but still) All jank hardware will eventually get patched - my USB bluetooth adapter didn't use to be detected at all, but now it just works like a charm. Someone else had a laptop audio problem, the fix for which was eventually merged into the kernel. These updates can be downloaded and installed while the system is running - you might want to restart, but it's better than waiting hours upon hours. Alongside all the customization options, stability and performance (the fact that my 2GB RAM, Phenom II CPU machine can run Minecraft Java really well and people with 4GB on Windows struggle tells a story) there's just a lot more benefits to Linux than Windows 10. And remember, if you have jank software that Wine really doesn't like, you can always run it in a virtual machine :)
@hansmitdergans78793 жыл бұрын
I also use it, because it's still very close to Windows 7 (besides the start menu, the ugly UI and the lack of compatibility to many programs). And you can customize it much more than Windows 10. I had a perfectly working classic theme before I reinstalled Windows, now I have a almost perfect Vista Aero theme. Windows 8 needed some time to grow up, but now it's perfectly usable. Still not as good as Windows 7, but a good alternative to Windows 10, which is in my opinion the worst Windows of all time.

As a surface owner, I really wondered if Windows 8.1's Start Screen would've been a better alternative to the barebones Tablet Mode I got with the preinstalled Windows 10. It looks like it was. This should've been a case where Microsoft should've compromised a little bit more. I love the new Start Menu in 10 but felt they really should've kept the Start Screen as the tablet mode. The tablet features in 10 feel like an afterthought now. I feel like Microsoft didn't do anything wrong with 8. What they should've done is still have an old classic menu in it but, still have a simple button to go to the Start Menu. Surface products wouldn't have suffered and PC users could ignore the Start Screen while tablet users can enjoy the amazing gesture-based menus. Now I feel like hunting a Surface Pro 3 down to use for games, small work, and media consumption. It feels like the answer to my small annoying problems with the Touchscreen of the Pro 7.

It'a a really good operating system. Currently I'm using Windows 10, but I miss 8.1. I think all the hate it has recieved comes from the design. But even design aged pretty well in my opinion, I kinda like the Start menu now. Apart from this, Win8.1 is a much faster and more stable OS than 10, on pretty much every hardware that has the proper drivers for both.

W8.1 is one of the best operating systems I've ever had. W10 is sometimes really frustrating, the UI is not that bad but not really for touch devices/users, overall it's a mess unfortunately and I hope that MS is gonna introduce a big improvement very soon either called W11 or whatever but more useable and stable, lightweight and consistent..

I love windows 8, it is my favorite version of windows mainly because I loved how different it was, and intuitive in my opinion, but it also ran great thanks to the desktop using the gpu to render. Maybe I liked windows 8 because its is kindof reminiscent of gnome in the linux space but upside down.

I have a strategy that I use for windows 10. First every time there is a major feature update I always create a bootable usb from Microsoft, this makes sure that there are no issues and the best performance is always there. I have to do this every six months because that's how feature updates are released. Overall I used windows 8.1 on a ThinkPad yoga and its 3 out of 5 stars from me I still think that windows xp, 7, and windows 10 when it works, are the greatest operating systems of all time.

As for right now, I'm using Windows 8.1 on all my devices. Of course, I've had to install OpenShell and Aero Glass Mod to make it more like Windows 7. Overall, it outperforms Windows 7. My Core2Duo Lenovo ThinkPad X200 laptop shreds compared to newer lowend Windows 10 laptops and most of all, I have full control over Windows Update. I was shocked when it performed great on a single core CPU laptop with 2 GB of RAM. So as long as Windows 8.1 stays supported, I'm going to use it. I'm not even considering Windows 7. Went straight from Windows XP (which I can't look at anymore) to Windows 8.1.

I always adored Windows 8 ever since it first came out. The very colorful and bright UI was a joy to see. Windows 10 is just a lot more desaturated and stoic in my opinion. I would personally love to see Windows 8 picked up again and upkept as a secondary OS for touch devices but obviously that's not gonna happen.

In my opinion, Windows 8 (and 8.1) It's an OS with a UI that got forced not only on non-touch screen computers but also on tablets. Windows 8 introduced picture password with no UI change in Windows 10 or in Windows 11, and it's a useless feature (in my opinion, again). Meanwhile, Windows 7 is more easy, it's my favorite OS, and even though it ended support, my dad still have it (on the computer from the rooftop of my home) Before answering to this comment, i want to say that SPAM COMMENT BOTS ARE NOT ALLOWED so please follow the rules

My touch enabled desktop computer came preinstalled with Windows 8 in 2013, i then upgraded it to Windows 8.1 and then to Windows 10, before Windows 10, I actually used to use touch more than a mouse and keyboard, but since Windows 10 came, I am using touch less than before. Yeah, Windows 10 really sucks for touch-oriented devices . I think microsoft should add proper Windows 8.1-like Tablet OS to Windows 11. But I gotta say, i really loved watching the beautiful animations in Windows 8 as my finger slid across the screen

Sadly, sooner or later - after Microsoft stops releasing security patches - it may become simply dangerous to do anything online with it. But, apart from Microsoft improving W10 enough, there may be another way to make use of such nice device. You might be able to get a Linux setup with an adequate, touch-enabled interface, that will bless you with indefinitely secure and still performant laptop|tablet (basically until websites become too bloated or it physically breaks). I don't think there's a distribution configured specifically for touch usage, so you should probably set it up manually. If you don't know how to go about it, I would suggest starting with Arch Linux. It is a do-it-yourself type of distribution, so it will teach you what exactly you can do and will give you an overview of the whole operating system. This way you should pretty quickly be able to actually get the features you like and iron out any annoying elements. So, go to the Arch Linux installation guide, install it in dualboot with W8.1 and set it up however you like. Explore the possibilities and read a lot. Learning and gaining skills is really worth it. And you've got only 780 days!
@mskiptr3 жыл бұрын
Oh, there's one thing that may actually affect your Windows installation - the boot manager. The default is GRUB but to make it look nice[0], be simpler and possibly support touch[1], you should try rEFInd[2]. [0] www.google.com/search?q=refind+themes [2] rodsbooks.com/ [1] In my case, I was able to choose the OS to boot by touch only in very specific conditions. It was due to a wonky UEFI implementation by HP. Microsoft's Surface UEFI is way better and stable so it should not be a problem.
