What delicate fossils though I went down to the South of England and found two fossils of shells which I gave to our sons many years ago, I had such fun finding them and Terry found a very large one that we wouldn't take from its matrix in case we damaged it and left for someone else, the whole thing was too heavy to take back up to the car. I couldn't help but think that if I could I would go there and spend time enjoying myself just looking and it I were younger I would lol. I love it when Matrix speaks, that is so clever and is hilarious thank you for making my day lol. The rain helps a great deal when you are looking for surface finds though that was some downpour judging by the way the water was streaming down. Matrix certainly enjoyed racing around and getting rid of so.e pent up energy. Thank you for ta⁹the time to make your videos Bryan, they are so good for those of us who cannot enjoy the freedom to take part in hunting for the earth's beauties like many do. Good luck and happy fossicking my friends God bless you all love and hugs to you, Matrix and Dylan Mary-Ellen UK

Oh wow, that reminds me of a story where I had a group of people come to the mine one day that I was caretaker of years ago. I left early and came back the next day and apparently they found a piece and they couldn’t carry it out of the pit, it took me all day to roll it up the hill and get it, 😆

My buddy and I just got back from a trip to Penn Dixie fossil park in New York looking for trilobites and it's cool to see the difference between those trilobites and the one's you're finding in Utah. All the ones you're finding seem so flattened compared to the ones we found. I definitely want to go to Utah and look for some of these!
@cathycasuccio3227
@cathycasuccio3227 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! i live right near that site. Grew up there and hunted the pit a lot - before the historical site took it over. Didn’t used to have paved trails, fences, or buildings and they knocked down the few hills that were in the pit. Ours are definitely more thick than the Utah ones and not brittle. Did you get to hunt the shale stream area, too? Glad you got to see the Penn Dixie site.

Also a huge difference in terms of age. The fossils here are about 510 million years in age from the middle Cambrian, whereas Penn Dixie's sediments are roughly 380 million years old from the Devonian period, a difference of 130 million years.

I went here as a student back when I was in the geology club. I got bored of fossils eventually and wandered off. Ended up finding pyrite crystals to the surprise of my professor who was with us. I saw limestone/shale (trace sulfur) and iron staining so I figured at the time the right elements were around. Now I know its because there was hydrothermal fluids that deposited them but my newbie geologist logic was sort of on point with the elements.

A lot of finding fossils is knowing where/what to look for. I 100% recommend checking scientific literature on the geology of an area to get an idea of what fossil-bearing formations are around and where you might find them exposed. Then you could use Google Maps as a way of filling in the blanks (and of course, it's a way of saving your favorite hunting spots so you can come back to them).
@MeargleSchmeargle
@MeargleSchmeargle 2 жыл бұрын
That seems like a neat place to check out. I've gone Cambrian Trilobite splitting before, but here in the east coast because here in Georgia we have a really good Cambrian formation called the Conasauga formation, and it's been described as "the Wheeler or Burgess Shale of the east coast". I would recommend being a tad bit more careful with your collecting method IMHO, as a couple of really good specimens were dinged up from some rough handling.
