Thanks steve i nailed a 2x2 to my fence at one end and used a telescopic pole on the other and adjusted it up and down til it looked level. Could have used a laser but it worked out

Hey Kevin nice job 👍 I use the same technique but I use biodegradable tree marking spray to spray the hedge with on the line. that way you can take the line out your way and just cut off all the sprayed line to get your level 😊 give it a go next time 👍

Nice job but never make square cedar hedges if you live somewhere that gets a lot of snow. Even if no snow - will be healthier if you reduce height while keeping natural pyramid shape. Burns the shit out of the inside in hot weather

Hi not sure of the type of cedar. I planted them at 5 feet and they were 15 feet when i pruned them. Dont plant them deep and water them often i used miracle grow the first two years as per recommendations then periodically. The hedge is 11 years old n ow so about 1 foot per year growth

Great job Kevin. I have individual Emerald Green Arborvitae in my backyard. I wish I wouldn't have mixed them up with alternative Quaking Aspen (nightmare sucker issues) and Bloodgood Japanese Maples. The hedge looks much more tidy. Mine have grown to about 15 feet and in the last year it's become noticeable they need to be shaped and topped. (separating at the top). I'm thinking of making them into cylinders instead of pyramidal in shape. I believe they have enough bulk to do this, considering I'd be losing a lot of tree at the top which will surely grow back out.

No you can trim cedar any time. Topping will promote filling in the sides and side trim promotes vertical growth. My hedge handles snow load better now too

These are awesome! What State are you in and where did you purchase? My guess is that these are either Emerald green (thuja occidentalis 'smaragd). or simply northern white cedar / American arborvitae. We’re in Vermont and I’m doing all sorts of research on these as we’re looking to fill in nearly 200’. Also, how did they respond after you did this?

Im in British Columbia Canada. Near Vancouver. They are Emerald green and they dont mind a trim at all. If you trim the sides they grow taller if you trim the top they fill out. Very hardy and they need lots of water to make them grow quickly i have moved since this vid and planted the same trees

Well Amber that hedge is 13 feet tall, can’t see in any windows, total privacy. Second it snows where I live and the christmas tree you want allows the snow to bend and break the branches. After trimming the top is dense and the hedge gets less damage.
