“When I first came out to Mom, she didn't quite understand it. She said something along the lines of, ‘I had this nightmare that you have boobs, and I don't think I can take that much LGBT, you know?’ And now I understand where she was coming from. Because you realize that for an Indian parent, losing their firstborn son feels almost like death.”
Even though she was lucky to have her family’s support, Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju understands why it’s so difficult for parents to accept that their children identify with a gender other than what they’ve been assigned. And this is reflected in how she accepted her mom’s very honest reaction to her being a trans person.
From applying her Mom’s makeup to being fascinated with Komolika’s bindis, even as a child, Trinetra knew that she was a girl trapped in a man’s body. So after spending almost 2 decades feeling alien in her own body, she finally accepted and transitioned into something she felt she always was-a woman!
And while transpersons always fear losing the support of their families once they accept themselves, Trinetra calls herself lucky for having her family’s support. And it is with their support and her hard work that she went on to become Dr. Trinetra, Karnataka’s first transgender doctor.
But life has been full of transitions for her, from a boy to a girl first, and now from a doctor to an actor! Having made her debut recently in the OTT series Made In Heaven, Trinetra believes that no matter what, learning never stops-be it in acting or otherwise.
In this episode, join us as she takes us through her incredible journey-from being trapped in a boy’s body to embracing herself! facing bullying in her formative years to receiving support from her family, from trying to conform to her assigned gender to finally accepted who she was, and blooming into the person she dreamt of!
We spoke about:
. Bullying in her formative years
. Her supportive family
. Embracing her true self and getting a gender confirmation surgery
. Becoming a doctor
. Playing Meher in Made In Heaven

About Humans of Bombay -
Humans of Bombay is a movement that started 9 years ago. We believe that every person has a story to tell and we want to help them tell these stories. In these years we’ve published stories across genres - stories of love, hope, faith, and courage. And through our storytelling, we’ve built an engaged community of over 5M!
Our idea is simple - to strike a chord with our community and catalog the beat of humanity, one story at a time.
