When you say it was more fun - it was, and earlier than that it was even more fun than that. Everyone was involved. I am not so sure it was more innocent in many ways but everything came from the year. There were rules around carnival and what one wore. T-shirts were for advertising and for carnival, there were not worn at other times, everyone could party for 3 days but they had to get up and be at work on the day after or they were sacked. No after parties, no taking off to Tobago. The police rules the roads but they had little to do as the people had their rules and followed them. Those wo collapsed in the street were carefully put to the side or somewhere safe to come to in their own time. All were safe. Even if you were not in masquerade you were part of the parade as you wandered from one place to another, you always knew many of the people in this band or that. Unfortunately the only downside was that the men often did what they wanted and left their wives at home taking on all comers, as did some of the people in the bands and for women to play the same game did not work for them. There were more women in Trinidad than men at the time and they had much more power, although women have their clever ways and it could work well for them in the long run it was a difficult journey for them,I am not too sure that that has changed.

“Sixty Seven” by Lord Kitchener was, I believe, the Road March that year - it was a honey of a tune. I would suggest that if you haven’t done it yet, turn off the sound on the video and look at it while listening to Sixty Seven, firstly, as sung by Kitch, and then, as played by one of the steelbands, maybe Guinness Cavaliers, from another device. Both versions are on KZfaq. Just a thought.🙂 I’m a 70 + person now, so I’m not tech savvy at all. Anyway, enjoy🙂
