Ah yes, you're absolutely right, there's an indication to play with swung quavers. Thanks for letting us know. I'll pin your comment.

Noticing these all seem contemporary pieces with no baroque, classical or romantic pieces. Is this unusual for Trinity?

To put it in context. At Grade 1 there are 21 pieces available in the 2023 onwards extended book. Six are written before 1900. You can also use all the repertoire from the 'old book' (up to 23) a substantial part of which is pre 20th century

I have a general question. While playing a staccato note does it make a difference if it is a crotchet note or a quaver note with an additional quaver rest. I think since the notes a detached anyway it doesn't make a difference. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Great question - I reckon a crotchet with a staccato dot is about the same thing as a quaver followed by a rest. We could discuss fine detail - the context will be relevant - but basically, yes, the same. Having read the notation, I use my ear to decide exactly what sound I want. Notation only goes so far; we then need to make the music our own.

In water sprite second line first bar second note why do we play it as a sharp?
@JulianLambert
@JulianLambert 4 ай бұрын
We need to take note of the key-signature to determine what sharps or flats to play.

Hi sir, is it ok to use 61 Keys Electronic Keyboard in Trinity Piano Grade 1 Digital Exam? Thanks.
@JulianLambert
@JulianLambert 4 ай бұрын
Well, if it's going to be able to give you the very best sound and show the examiner your control of dynamics and articulation. I suspect it's allowed but ensure you're playing on the very best instrument available to you.

It's a Casio GP-510 and the audio you're hearing is a wav file recorded directly onto a thumb drive.

@@ravelesque34 yes, but perhaps better to simply jump to the exam that's challenging. There's no need to sit them all.

Why are you playing Water Sprite with 2 hands when its only the G Clef Oh NvM I see the L.H. so I guess that stands for Left hand 🙂.
@JulianLambert
@JulianLambert 15 күн бұрын
Ah, are you thinking that the G clef means 'play with the left hand'. You're nor the first or last to assume that. The clef just tells us what the note is, not which hand to play it with. Similarly notes on the lower stave might need to be played with the right hand.
@marchey
@marchey 14 күн бұрын
@@JulianLambertHi Julian, I'm also wondering why in the sheet music there is this indication to use the L.H. for some notes where I feel that it would be perfectly possible to play (at least most of the piece) with the R.H. only.

Noticing these all seem contemporary pieces with no baroque, classical or romantic pieces. Is this unusual for Trinity? And why are there no scales and broken chords at the back? I had quite a shock today when looking at little one's book as she has to play exam from this and I wanted to start scales with her. The reason I had a shock was I then thought, is this the only repertoire pathway? She needs to do the whole exam.

You're quite right; this book is very contemporary orientated. The extended edition has an extra 9 pieces. But the 21 pieces in the from 2021 books are also in the current syllabus. There are 56 pieces in all to choose from. Visit my Teachable site to find out more. The scales and arpeggios are published in the Extended Edition book, not the Standard Edition. Consider learning scales without notation.

But if we take their syllabus as a whole which includes 56 pieces - there's plenty of variety.

Yes, that is very true. I suppose it seems easier if there is variety in one book, so perhaps my observation is born out of laziness.

You make a good point Denise. Yes, this particular book, the 'from 2023', is biased towards the contemporary and lots of arrangements too: music from TV and film, pop music and computer games. Clearly a conscious move. Though the content in the 'from 2021' books is still valid and these books contain a more balanced repertoire selection.
