I love you Trinny. Happy new year! 💗 Sustainability means different things to different people. Some are taking a minimalist approach, shopping vintage stores, looking for ethically sourced fabrics, assessing cost per wear, but for some the ethics and work practice of a brand is important factor in sustainability. The ethics and working conditions for employees provided by brands like Zara and H&M are a real issue, but how do we change this? Boycotting the brands may affect these people more. High profile, people like Trinny could be a driving force for change. We all want inexpensive clothes, but it’s at the cost of people’s lives. These fast fashion retailers have forced many retailers in Australia to close their doors because they can’t compete. I applaud brands like Everlane and we should be supporting these brands more. I’m in no way perfect, I have more clothes than I need and love fashion, but I want to do more to change in 2020. The message I got from this is that we need to shop for what suits us and look for timeless quality styles that will work with other pieces. It’s nothing new, but I think we sometimes forget when you’ve got the sales assistant telling you how amazing you look in something you’ll only wear once. 🥰

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and allowing us to learn from you. Thank you to Team Trinny for putting in that hard work behind the screen! ❤️ I would really appreciate an episode on how to find certain high quality key pieces for people who are vegan and want to abstain from animal based products. The really nice long coats, suits often times use wool. Shoes and bags real leather etc. Keep spreading joy! ❤️

I agree Trinny! If you love and take care of what you buy and enjoy wearing it for years that is sustainable.

It's wonderful that you keep your clothes for a long time and pay attention to cost per wear - that is a step towards sustainability. Unfortunately, the workers who produce Zara clothes in foreign countries don't get paid a fair wage, and often work in dangerous and unsafe conditions. Moreover, there's a lot of waste in the garment industry and purchasing new items promotes even more pollution. Most of the items at Zara are made from manmade fibres such as polyester, acrylic, and polyurethane, which take decades to biodegrade when they inevitably end up in the landfill. "Sustainable shopping with fast fashion" simply isn't possible unless you buy a fast fashion item secondhand. In fact, secondhand shopping is the most sustainable way to shop. I'd love for you to make a video about buying vintage or secondhand!

@@stephaniezambrano5829 how could you keep them for many years with such bad quality? I tried and didn't really work for me. And also because they are made with so many nasty materials they will pollute when you will through them away. We are just postponing the problem by doing so

These items are still in good shape just because they were never washed - dry cleand only, if ever. Every other item bought in Zara that is washed just once in washing machine is a rag.

So much in my wardrobe is Zara and I am super picky about fit. Some seasons I buy one item (this year a green crinkly rain coat) and some I buy quite a bit. I love the unusual cuts and shapes Zara will come out with from time to time.

Whilst you can find lovely pieces at thrift stores, unless you are living in a metropolitan centre, it is slim pickings. Shopping sustainable is a privilege in itself. Not everyone has options. She is advising people to shop thoughtfully, with purpose and to take care of your garments. This will reduce waste and limit needless consumption.

Ps about lyla I wear My moms knitted dress a couple of times every year and she bought it roughly 55 years ago. Also When our shapes Change I have a circle of friends with whom I swap or give away clothes! Sometimes I’ve even gotten My old clothes back When I’ve fitted them again in either direction! But clothes are just so much FUN and It’s really nice to wear something which you’ve gotten from someone you love because it’s been theirs at least when you start getting older and raid your moms wardrobe etc. It’s Very much playing dress up!

For many reasons many of us are not on the '100% sustainable' train in terms of only purchasing second hand or not purchasing 'fast fashion'. This is an excellent video that shows that purchasing from a 'fast fashion' store is not so toxic if you are mindful and purchase items that will still be wearable for years to come, which has an enormous environmental impact. Years ago my friends daughter would go shopping every weekend for cheap clothes that would be worn once and then be left on the floor. It was revolting. Today consumers are becoming more aware of their impact and stores like Zara provide an outlet for well priced good quality options that can last for years if you look after them properly. Many 'designer' clothes that cost hundreds of dollars on sites such as Net-a-Porter are made of acrylic and polyester. I have no doubt many of them are made in the same factories as Zara products. As someone who loves clothes, who was raised by a woman who loved clothes, I have a wardrobe that is a mix of designer, high street, vintage and thrift store. The thing is if you don't have access to a decent thrift store, you won't go to one. Buying vintage is also not always 'cheap' and if you are on a budget it's all about getting the most out of what you buy and what you can afford. It's easy to be on your soapbox regarding sustainability and ethics within the fashion industry, but we all need to be clothed and if you are not dressed well you are judged. Sometimes it's the difference between getting a job or not, for others its about social inclusion. We all belong to a tribe and what we wear is usually a reflection of where we feel we belong. Far be it for me to write a tresise on the importance of fashion...or maybe I will, but not here Trinny, worry not! xxx

I think it is important to love whatever we keep in our closets. And Trinnys enthusiasm teaches that. She talks about respect for our clothes. So her closet is curated. If we all had only clothes we loved in our closets the textile industry would not be half as polluting as it is today. Trying to find biodegradable clothes could be a next step. But what about lycra?

This is more of a be discerning with your purchases, from wherever they come from rather than just buy stuff that you wear 3 times then bin rather than sustainable in terms of low chemical use, low water us, low air miles, organic, fair trade or well made and so will last hopefully meaning less to landfill etc... Mainstream consumerism has to scale back, we have reached peak consumer bit the planet and people issues are starting to gain traction. Also, clothes will become more expensive in the next five years so repairing, restyling, rewearing will become more commonplace even for people who can afford to current shop in Harvey Nicks.

I have always shopped this way. My body, alas, did not follow. Hence, I have three pairs of all leather slacks (gorgeous) which after three children will no longer fit at the waist but I am so attached to them I can’t bear to let go. I have other things that are such forever clothes and suffer the same fate. My body simply won’t hold up for the ten to 15 years that my clothes have! And I also give lots of these gems to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. I am not needy enough in my relative wealth to feel justified in making a profit on top of having had years of wear. (I think those who buy designer bags with an eye to making a profit are owned by their bags and not the reverse. It is a “cheap, cheesy” orientation to living and dressing.) I will, however, continue to buy the clothes I love, but I’ll have to buy the things that fit my altered and aging body.

Secondly, I totally get your intention behind putting out this video and I agree with you 100% that pieces from Zara & other places must be re-utilised, re-styled, re-used for as long as possible whilst having fun. Now, having said that, I truly feel that someone as awesome, wealthy, abundant, creative & experienced as you has the potential of inspiring many to purchase from sustainable brands. Sustainable to me should be buying clothes you love and want to wear for a long time. People have become so used to throwing a way clothes simply because supposedly it is not in fashion. It is ridiculous. As a child there wasn't a lot of money I had to wear my clothes until they were unwearable. If you can't afford the new sustainable which is very expensive buy what you love and will wear until it falls apart only then buy new. As for second hand where I live in New York that is not a cheap option many of the things can cost as much as something from a fast fashion brand.

Zara is in no way a form of sustainable fashion. I really do wish you would cover second hand shopping, thrifting and learning to sew. Watch The True Cost, which is on Netflix. I do like you Trinny but you are not at all champion of sustainability.

Oooh where she lives there are the best charity shops with loads of designer stuff. Sloane Street charity shopping is a brill way to spend an afternoon in London

I think on behalf of Trinny she does really make use out of what she buys. Even though she has a lot she keeps it for a while and still reuses it, which is what I think most people struggle with.

Try turning certain clothes inside out when hanging them up.
