Join Trinny for a new series of skincare deep-dives, in which she’ll be gaining a deeper understanding of how skincare ingredients work to help make our skin happier and healthier. This time she’s chatting to Chief Innovation Officer Claire about all things retinol, also known as vitamin A. There’s a lot to cover, from what retinol and its derivatives do and how they do it, to their differences in strength, quality and price. If you listen to your skin and choose the right product for you, retinol can truly transform your complexion…

Trinny thank you. I’ve been using Paulas choice 1% retinol for 18 months now and it’s good but I wanted a step up as I have hyperpigmentation but don’t particularly want to start going down the prescription route. I bit the bullet after watching this and invested in Medik8 retinoate. It’s very expensive (although I got money off for first time purchase) and worth every penny. Too soon to tell Re hyperpigmentation but my skin is baby soft and glowing!

It’s a minefield. After a lot of research I’m using Geek and Gorgeous retinal, which is the most affordable I’ve found for retinal. I haven’t found it too irritating I use the 0.1% strength (they also do a 0.05%) and it’s vegan and cruelty free. I’m happy with the price and quality of the product.

Hmmm I have been using prescription strength Tretinoin for over 20 yrs since my early 20s and i get compliments all the time on my skin when folks know how old i am…i dont think you can get those kinds of results with the OTCs
@alicew3563
@alicew3563 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I use Tretinoin as well. Personally, I think it's kind of a selling tool, as vitamin A is not expensive per se, but it's the regulations and they cannot sell Tretinoin over the counter, so they have to do these "converting creams", sometimes overpriced, especially when you know that the main ingredient is not expensive itself, and the creams really aren't that effective att all. I don't know much about the latest technology they talked about (the one with good strength and effeciancy and no irritations) though, but it sounded promising, the pricing I assume will propbably be ridiculosly high. I do not get irritations from Tretinoin, my skin still do flake sometimes, but in a good way and skin is always smooth and hydrated when on Tretinoin, and I use it 4/week and blend it with a neutral moisturizer. So ladies, if you do not want to pay a fortune for anti aging creams, Tretinoin is a good alternative, but you have to start slow, especially if having sensitive skin.

@@alicew3563 yes yes yes!!!! I so agree with everything in your comment! I'm 21, about to be 22 and have been using Tretinoin every third day for a while now and of course SPF50+ RELIGIOULY every day. I'm a bit annoyed with the woman's comment "eventually tretinoin will destroy your skin barrier and say I've had enough". All these derivative products accumulate to a waste of money and poor efficacy. The tretinoin I use is AUD65 for 50mL which is quite dear for a cream of that size however, when taking into account brands like Sunday Riley and the amount of money you'd spend on their products to see any results...it's a bargain. Anyhow, I'll trust doctors/dermatologists over these guys here any day...

Granactive retinoid 2% emulsion was my fave until retinoids were disallowed in Canada. Felt lovely and I had no irritation when using it. I believe the granactive products from The Ordinary are Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR) - Brandon Truaxe, the late founder of Deciem, promoted skincare options that offered minimal irritation/inflammation (though admittedly sold some other products like direct acids or other retinoid forms that were more irritating due to market demand).
@alicew3563
@alicew3563 2 жыл бұрын
Can anyone explain why you should buy a Retinol, like No7, Sunday Riley, or those others in that segment displayed here, instead of Tretinoin (which is much cheaper)? They all irritates the skin she says. I buy that the Retinoate (the new technology) is better, as no irritation but still effective and that RetinAL is milder if you have sensitive skin. Still I do not understand the benefits they talk about and not using Tretinoin for antiaging? Also, the peeling, which you get with Tretinoin is part of the re-newing of skin and thereby also good for erasing already existing fine lines and prevent wrinkles to be created. Isn't that what antiaging is about? (apart from stimulating/boosting collagen, which I assume they all do, more of less) I mean if there is no peeling from those other segments, or the newest technology ones, then how will skin be renewed? I am confused.
@bakica_vangica
@bakica_vangica 2 жыл бұрын
I use Tretinoin every third day + SPF 50 religiously and am 21, about to be 22. Preventative skincare is everything. However, diet and exercise is most important. I agree with you and don't understand why she says the Tretinoin will damage your skin barrier eventually and your skin will say "I've had enough"?!?! People have been using Tretinoin since their 20s, 30-40 years ago and they have amazing skin today. It is a life long product really. I'll trust Dr. Dray here on KZfaq and actual doctors/dermatologists.

My grandma uses for 70 years a cream with retinyl well it did something good because she is almost 90 years old and everyone thinks she is at least 25 years younger she has almost no wrinkles 😮 i can count 4 small ones around her eyes when she laughing 😮 and her lips couple wrinkels but she does not use the cream on her lips ...she is the oldest in our family with less wrinkles then people that are half her age 😮the other thing that i think also helped she always stayed out of the sun..she never smoked or drunk alcohol . She washing her face morning and evening and puts here creme on i wish i knew her secret years ago one day I was like how do you keep looking so young grandma me being 30 years then she said well i dont know only thing i do for ass long as i can remember is..... what about Differin gel? Adapolene gel. How effective does that fit into the diagragm. I like that you drew this out. Makes more sense this way to me now. Also, do you know if topical Retinoids cause hair loss? I have heard they can and wondering about this.
@ilyak8987
@ilyak8987 2 жыл бұрын
Adapalene is a different active ingredient to retinoids. In my experience it is gentle, less irritating, but also less effective when it comes to treating acne, but also when ot comes to anti-aging. The effects vary by formula but i would generally place it between retinyl (palmitate) and retinol.

@@sadiakhattak1918 One all around good product is Paulas choice retinol! It is strong, so you should start with a low amount once a week and see how your skin reacts. The goal from there is to use it up to 2-3 times a week. (some might up it to once every day) Depending where you live, this could be done as a treatment during the winter for example. Always use minimum spf30, especially when using a retinol, because the skin is exfoliating and thus the outer skin layer is thinner.
