I remember skiing this run as a kid. Probably 25 years ago now. It used to be very doable and I remember it to be very hard, but fun. Seems now like it's super overgrown and has had no maintenance in a while.

The “official entrance” to black hole is actually a little further down the mountain (something I just found out last week). The entrance I’m using is the technical “top” of the WOODS the trail is in, but I’m not actually on the “official” Black Hole trail until after that big cliff. But if you are an experienced skier, I think you should give this cliff a try, and honestly I’m still considering it part of Black Hole because it is actually deserving of a triple black rating, it’s scarily steep, narrow, and a slight slip will send you barreling 30 feet down a ~5 foot wide corridor on a cliff.

@ThatPinkSuitGuy

if you are a beginner: Morse Highlands is super fun if you are intermediate: all of Sterling is a great choice, also try out Doc Dempseys and FIS at Madonna if you are an expert: do all the doubles, they're all super fun. If you're really up for a challenge, you could try something like Hershey Squirts which is an unofficial trail that is behind a fence off Drifter (if you take Drifter top to bottom you'll know what I'm talking about.) Some fun trails (personal favorites): Robins Run, Madonna Liftline, Freefall, all the pipelines (there's multiple segments), Doc Dempseys, and if you want some easier stuff, shakedown, knights revenge, or smugglers alley.

For everyone saying it doesn't look steep and he can't ski/ is skiing way above his ability: The upper half of this run is absolutely insane and the angle doesn't do it justice. It is very much just survival skiing- with better coverage you can get some jump turns in at the beginning, but for the coverage he had that day, sidestepping is the smart option one slip and you tumble down like 100 feet ricocheting off rocks and trees.

This is easily my least favorite video on my channel, it’s my very first one that I threw up without much thought and it ended up becoming my most popular. You’re absolutely right, the GoPro doesn’t do it justice. However I also didn’t bring my best to the table here. I just did a run of this trail a couple weeks ago, planning on throwing it in an upcoming video. I like to think I shredded it up pretty well but that’s for the viewer to decide. However I remember this day, absolutely not the best condition to do this, and it is incredibly steep in person, probably around 40-50 degree pitch if not more

@@ThatPinkSuitGuy I mean it's good to be humble and put multiple attempts at the same run under various conditions so someone doesn't see you shredding it on a perfect day and think "ohh that looks so easy for a triple black" and then they end up hurt or stuck in a spot they cant get themself out of

This follows the question -“hey, can I borrow your skis?” Video shows two eastern skiing realities at once; rating inflation and “rice” (rocks and ice together). I’ve skied Smuggs many times, no double blacks there let alone triple…some really bad runs though. Can be a really fun place to ski with the family.

You're doing what most people do on that run, you're "getting down it", you're not skiing it. It's just not a very good run in my opinion, and unless you know it well and get to it when it's fresh, it's a complete waste of time. You did fine. I used to work at Smugg's; taught Snowboarding from the 90s into the 2000s. When people would ask us if we thought they were ready to ride "out back" (beyond the area boundary), we'd take them down TBH. Very few displayed the necessary skills to get the nod. Very few. But I remember this kid from Toronto who I was giving private lessons to, Sara. She was 12 or 13. I nick-named her smooth because she just fucking had it! I took her down TBH for the obligatory test and she cruised it. Like charged into those woods and never stopped. She Dolphin'd it top to bottom. We ripped past ski patrol in there too, they were wide eye'd at Smooth, pig tails flying behind her, maching through there like a friggin' pro. Seriously, I've ridden with a lot of talented people and I still think she's the most talented natural rider I've even had the pleasure to work with. Anyhow, if you think this is difficult...don't leave the resort boundary. It's steeper, tighter, and has actual drops. And no one comes to rescue you if you fuck it up. Stay safe!

I skied this many times but laughed when it opened as a glade on the trail map bc I’d never seen such little effort put into a trail map glade from a resort… it’s like they just put a trail sign up, clapped their hands together, and declared “new trail”… total cost $20

How does ski patrol check this at end of day?
@ThatPinkSuitGuy
@ThatPinkSuitGuy 5 ай бұрын
I have since found out that the upper cliff is not technically part of the trail, it’s an additional entrance. The actual entrance is a secret little passage onto the glades directly after the cliff. So if I had to guess, that’s what ski patrol actually checks. However, even with the cliff, the trail is definitely triple black worthy in my books, at least compared to the rest of Smuggs trails.
