So, SLP had designed those pipes to work with their aftermarket silencer; which is what is on this sled, as well as the stock can on an SPX which is why it looks so stock. Back in the day, this was a great option as guys with SP's could either run the aftermarket can OR the stock SPX can though I don't think they made the same power with the SPX can.

The ultras got a bad name when guys would triple pipe them. It added 30-40 hp but you needed to run exhaust temp gauges...and look at them every once in a while, and be prepared to re-jet constantly. I'm a cat guy but always loved the ultras.

Had the same sled, came with single exhaust from factory. I put the slp pipes on, came with different needles for carbs, clutch weights and springs. Some require a timing adjustment. Slp sent a set up sheet with the pipes.

Just noticed the finer mesh screen on the air intakes, top of the airbox. Was that a prior owner mod? My Storm doesn't have that.

I dont think Ive ever seen a rod look like that before, seen real rusty ones but that pitting is new to me. One would think detonation that bad would show on the top of the piston. Does not matter as either way your gonna make the triple gods happy making it right! Gonna say those are aftermarket pipes, the extra holes in the belly pan would not be there like that from factory. I do believe that they had a model with 3 pipes though.
@nuttersspeedshop
@nuttersspeedshop 2 жыл бұрын
We think they "fixed it" after the detonation. Meaning they just threw a new piston in and ignored everything else. The more we dig into this thing the worse it gets.

and i wanna say they run 8300 rpm. use 56 gram weights, epi silver spring, r12 helix, and that should get you in the ball pakr of whre you want to be and for jetting id say stock spx jetting, so 2.5-3.0 slides, 380 mains across p-8 to q-2 needle jet, i have my needles in like 2/2/3 pos or 3/3/4 ill verify my carbs next time i open them. im running psi mod blasters btw

@@nuttersspeedshop Any brand you would recommend, next is trying to find said pipes for that old of a sled.

I don't know if anybody still makes new pipes for 20+ year old sleds any more so it will probably be whatever you can find used. I'm not going to recommend a specific brand. I think they all work. You can search for dyno comparisons and maybe find some info there. I know when I was trying to figure out what my 650 pipes were I found a ton of info with internet searches.

Measure the half the circumference of the pipe with the slp logo on it from weld to weld. If it’s about 8 inches they’re 8800rpm pipes. If it’s about 9 inches it’s low rpm pipes and run roughly stock rpm. Most of them are 8800 pipes
@nuttersspeedshop
@nuttersspeedshop 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I will check this and clutch for the pipes!

It isn’t circumference, it’s length of barrel. The longer barrel ran around 8k rpm’s and made 30hp plus over the single. The short straight barrels ran 86-8700rpm for 43hp with slip needles, a timing adjustment and new 2.5, if I remember right slides for the carbs along with P-8 nozzles/ needle jets. If they where like PSI mod blasters, the Hi-RPM pipe also resonated about 9600 rpm and worked well there. I think pSI used Q-0 nozzles with a PSI needle. Supposedly similar to a 97 Ultra SPX needle. Or 1993 storm needle. And 11 degrees of timing versus 12 degrees of timing for the SLP HI-RPM pipe. I know this is long since figured out for this sled. It’s out there for others that may try and pipe an ultra in the future for a vintage muscle sled. I enjoyed many seasons on an Art Sever/Engine Tech ultra 800, with PSI mod blasters. Tried SLP hi-rpm on the sled stock and with the big bore. The PSI just ran more consistent. One of the few thing Bruce at Pretty Shitty Investment did right in the late 90s..

Man...maybe its best to find a used good running engine? Hes going to have quite a bit into that when its done? Also that close up pic of the rod was cool as heck. Will be following this one, i love ultras!
@nuttersspeedshop

But how do you know it's really a good engine without tearing it down? This one was running and we never expected to find problems like that rod.

@@nuttersspeedshop thats true but at least you could compression check it? I guess i was looking at the overall monetary aspect. If he has the coin to drop on it then it looks like a crank rebuild plus at this point?

I think l would be a little leery about holding an open flame so close to those spark plug holes, could have explosive 🧨 consequences...! Just a thought.
@nuttersspeedshop
@nuttersspeedshop 2 жыл бұрын
We do that on purpose with flooded motors sometimes. Pull the plugs and put a torch at the plug hole and pull it over to burn off some of the excess fuel. It just goes poof. Not even loud. It probably falls into the category of 'don't try this at home.' but we lived.

The 96 ultra sp came factory with a 3 into 1 manifold and single pipe, SLP sold 2 sets for the ultra, high and low rpm pipes.
