the very overlooked roadster is a nice mix of old recto sound with modern features and its still my go to mesa amp. the mesa recording preamp and the mini rectifier both are some of the "best" recto sounding pieces of gear that they have produced so far imo. the old single channel rectifier is also known to have something magical about it. cheers 🎸🎸

Yeah my retro pre recording sounds simultaneously as a typical Rectifier and then defiantly not like a Rectifier :) Has all the girth and bass and thump but also is tight enough...I almost never boost it.

Got my Multi Watt Triple Rec a little over 2 years ago and it quickly became my favorite amp. Sounds massive without getting muddy. Great amp for 90s and 2000s tones. Also great for adding some modern color behind older style amps like a JCM 800 or SLO-100 when double tracking.

I had a Triple Rec from 2000 (right after the switch to 3 channels) for years and absolutely LOVED it (except the clean channel, lol). Tube Screamer boosting in front and it was the envy of many other bands we played with. Sold it to move to Cali about 10 years ago, and still sometimes think of it like a lost love 😆🫡

The 1999 sounds a lot better than the multi watt newer version. Hey its just how I feel, also maybe it’s vastly different sounding in the room? Fluff said several times I believe that “ the multi watt has more top end “ on my headphones, it was the opposite. The rev G was MUCH more scooped sounding to me, and more of a musical and usable tone than the multi watt. Both I loved though! Also i am not a Mesa owner , yet have much respect for them as a company., and are a block letter 5150 guy personally.

I liked them both a lot, but the characteristic "fizz" is more noticable to me on the Rev G, which isn't a bad thing necessarily. It sounds more alive to me, where as the MW sounds more refined.

Ive always maintained I’m not a fan of DR for the fact they have a loose bottom-end, scooped mids and somewhat harsh top-end. That multi-watt however sounds really good with the added midrange . Maybe I do like Rectifiers after all🤷‍♂️. Thanks for making this video, it was interesting.👍

For me on headphones, the red channels are so close that it is not only ball park. It is within the spread of normal variation of amplifiers of one range. I wonder how close they would be with a similar set of tubes. The Rectifiers react sensitive to tube changes. The JJs are absolutely not my choice, for these amps. I like the NOS chinese Shuguang ones, all across the Dual and Triple Rectos, no matter what incarnation (2ch, 3ch, Multi Watt). With the orange channel I am on an opposite planet to Fluff. I think, on the Rev G it is tighter and I like the higher settling of the midrange. I think it is more vocal friendly in a mix. But, I could be wrong. I would never run the Mid-Pot so high, on either channel. For me it is too vocal. On a Rev G I would put it somewhere around 1 o'clock.

I honestly could take both but would prefer the Rev G Triple. I had one and traded it for an Uber Twin Jet which I hated. After selling off that and a bunch of other gear I now have a Blackout Fortin Cali which absolutely slays. Still miss that Rev G Triple though. I will have another Recto again at some stage. I quite like the Road King 2’s aswell. Great Video man

My first big boy amp was a Rev G Dual Rec in '99. Playing skate punk and hardcore that was the "it" amp back then. I remember being very underwhelmed. Ran an eq in the loop and boost out front to make it do what I wanted, but when I got a Pittbull Ultra-lead in 2003, it was all over: that tightness and punch and attack is something I MUCH preferred. I have played the multi-watt and think it is an overall better amp than the Rev G's I have owned/played. No way I will ever pay what the Rev G's are going for now.

The Rev G constantly sounded like it had a wet blanket put over the cab section....the multi-watt to me, sounded far better, way better sounding high fq to upper mid fq.....just all around better sound. That 90s scooped sound explains the insane swing of the mid range from Rev G to Multi watt voicing.

I've owned a lot of rectifiers over the years, and this video does a good job showing the differences. The red channels are very close between all the models. You may prefer one over the other, but you'll like them all. The orange channel has changed the most over the years. Definitely more "useable" in the newer models. The clean channel is absolute garbage in the REV G. It's just a mode of the orange channel where they cut back the gain in each stage, but leave the same topology. In the three channel versions they have a separate dedicated pre-amp for the clean channel. You could buy a modern rectifier for the clean channel, not that anyone does. Personally, i like the orange and clean channels in the REV G. They each have a very unique sound that admittedly isn't for everyone. You might only find one or two sections of a song where they're useable, but those sections will really shine.

"Okay let's see if we can lower the mids on the Multi Watt to match the Rev G." *slightly touches the Multi Watt Mid knob bringing it from 12:00 down to 11:58. "Welp clearly there's just no way to reduce those Multi Watt mids folks!"

Orange channel on the multi watt sounds more natural and organic especially in the mids, Rev G sounds super girthy and pissed off...Red channel the Rev G sounds slightly better and would cut through the mix better, the multi watt is a little too dark/warm for my liking.

I owned a later series 2 single rectifier. Clean channel was surprisingly good, but pushed mode is terrible. To my ear the amp overall contained more midrange than the similar era rectifiers, but channel 2 had a lot of extra sizzle/fizz on the top end thats really hard to dial out. I bought a Multi-Watt Triple Rec about a year or two ago and was immediately glad I did. The single is great for studio work, but in my opinion the Triple has all the sauce. Great cleans, with pretty high headroom, decent crunchy tones on channel two, and all the guts and glory you want for high gain on channel 3. Hope this helps.

More headroom? Both have absolutely zero headroom. Everything going in is clipped hard, super hard. Check the waveform, just a blob. I think it would have been a good idea to volume match the amps post. Towards the end 2ch was more quiet. All in all, neither sounded that good, just too much gain.

I guess I'm just not a Mesa person - this could be the worst-sounding tube amplifier I've ever heard. It sounds like a broken JCM-800 where someone EQ'd out all the sweet frequencies and left mostly ugly/harsh resonant frequencies. 6:42 sounds like someone running a Rat pedal directly into a console without an amp.

I wasn't for a long time, but you have to play one for a while to get it. I have a multi watt and i dont play it with this much presence. I have the presence dialed way back. The low end on these is pretty great and there is obvious sag which makes them super different to play through.

I think part of the appeal of a rectifier is the ugliness, though maybe that isn’t the fairest characterisation. It’s not supposed to be a pristine, refined sound, it just has a very gnarly voicing. EQ’d and recorded right, it can sound bestial, and depending on the revision, can have more or less subtlety than others of their kind. I have a ‘95 Tremoverb that is great, nowhere near as harsh as a typical Rev G, more of a mid-mid-voicing and less gain overall, but still breathes fire when it needs to. YMMV, taste-subjectivity, etc etc.
@andrewmarandola9566
@andrewmarandola9566 9 ай бұрын
@@22ChampagneSupernova Understood. I get that it has it's own niche sound. However, it seems like it would be way easier to start with an objectively great sounding amplifier and add EQ/pedals until you get a gnarly sound, rather than starting with an amp that can't be tamed back to normal. It's all taste, I guess.
@22ChampagneSupernova
@22ChampagneSupernova 8 ай бұрын
@@andrewmarandola9566 That's a perfectly valid way to go about achieving that sound as well, and I do see the appeal of having a more refined starting point. Ultimately they're both just tools to make noise with. For what it's worth there are certainly things that a rectifier is just not cut out for in comparison to a JCM 800, but both are great for what they are. Different flavours, indeed.
