We have a condo on the Big Island and fly HA often. Sometimes when the nonstops to/from KOA are sold out I'll fly a 717 via HNL. I prefer the old 717 interior with the purple, thicker-padded seats and larger tray tables to the new interior with slimline seats and worthless tray tables. And seeing the FA's do their beverage service on a 30 minute flight is like watching a bunch of wind-up dolls moving at warp speed 😆

You made our airport in Lihue look quite nice and cozy. It’s not a long or glamorous flight, but it’s a common commuter and shopper flight for many of us on Kauai. A lot of us relied on the 717 for a long time, it’ll be sad to see them go. Yet at the same time I’m shocked we don’t use turboprops to go from LIH to HNL.

717 is sooo underrated. This thing is legit a modern DC9 lol. Great vid as always

The 717 is my favorite aircraft I’m so lucky delta still flies them on the east coast so much :) I’m going to be pretty sad when they’re finally retired I’ve been flying on them since I was a kid on AirTran they’ve always been my favorite!

Flew from Honolulu to Lihue back in mid 2015. Good experience overall. I will never forgot that experience with my family.

I used to fly a 717 almost weekly between BOS and BWI circa 2005 on the sadly-now-defunct AirTran. Great airline, and great aircraft. Whisper-quiet up front in first class.

I frequently flew in Midwest Airlines between 2006 and 2010. They utilized the 717 on most routes except their longest legs (they still used the MD-8x series for those flights due to their longer range). Midwest’s 2-2 cabin with 34” seat pitch was very comfortable; a full flight didn’t feel cramped, and nobody had to fight for overhead storage space.

So glad to see my always favorite Interisland airline still flying the "DC-9-30" advanced even after boeing and their creepy hands took the best bird under it's wretched management.

I am a ground crew for Hawaiian but I mainly do the a321neos or the A330s

Lucky for you to have also experienced a flight in this wonderful aircraft! I took the 717 from Sydney to Hobart in January 2022, and I sat right at the back of the plane, between the wing and the engine, and take-off was exhilerating! The sheer force of those engines, and the sound 🤩 Hope you enjoyed this experience on the 717 as much as I did!

This brings back so many memories of the DC-9

Personally, when I fly DC-9 family aircraft (which the 717 ultimately is), I enjoy being near the front of the a/c. The nearly silent takeoff, followed by the gradual increase of wind noise as we airspeed increases is exhilarating to me. No other currently operating aircraft offers this and it’s just awesome.

This is really a super DC-9.... Boeing gave it a new name 717... It is nice to see the wing with no winglets. and what an impressive take off...you can sense the power of those large engines

717s fly into my airport a lot! They are delta though, and on the plus side my local airport is the largest AFB in the USA

Reminds me of our honeymoon back in 2016, we took a flight from Lihue to OGG. Love these 717's, so enjoyable and gotta love the passion fruit guava juice. 🥰

I spent time growing up on Kauai ❤️. Those years were magical. I always remembered being so excited to fly these 717s inter-island. From the sound of those engines on takeoff to the whine they make to the small adjustments the pilots make to keep their approach speed. LOVE THESE. I hope Hawaiian decides to hang onto these beautiful birds for years to come. There’s hardly any left flying on the mainland. Especially since all the MD80s have been retired. Delta has their 717s earmarked to be retired for the A220s. And what is left of those seemed to stay on the east coast. I wish delta would switch that up. I guess it’s an economics thing. Most of our city pairs are further apart out west. But that logic doesn’t really check out because there’s tons of E175s and A220s, which host similar roles.

I share you sentiments with the 717 we took it from Honolulu to the big island then to Maui. They have to start the plane from Honolulu at the gates, I'm not sure if the APU was not working, we line up behind a C17 and Australian fuel ranker behind us on take off. We sat at the front and it was very quiet.

I love flying on the MD-80 series, never got to fly on a 717.

4:40 out of the three ultra low cost airlines, Allegiant is the only one with full size tables, unless thats been changed recently. I have yet to fly on a 717, meant to with AirTran but never got on a flight with them before SWA bought them

I've flown on one of delta's 717s and hope I'll be able to do it again. If I make it to Hawaii, I'll most likely do this route.

Flown the QantasLink 717's from SYD to MCY several times. I'm 194cm so it's not the most comfortable aircraft for a 1:30 flight, not sure what seat pitch Qantas use but it's pretty tight. Hopefully the new Airbus has better seating. Great review as usual and nice to have you back. Might want to put on your list a new Australian carrier that just got it's operating license today. Bronza is the new low cost carrier flying from MCY to mostly regional centres.

Looks like they were not making too much money on this flight. Passion Orange Guava = POG ... remember the milk caps from 30 years ago that were a big fad? Started in Hawaii I believe.

Gorgeous! My first B-717 flight was on AirTran out of MDW Dec, 2000. Having had many 727 & 737 takeoffs from MDW, I was used to the steep climb out. But holy ****! That 717 went damn-near vertical!
