I've only done a bit of plumbing in my life. But those seems to be couplings. They are piping in a literal sense, but not usually directly called pipes (as they are called couplings or couplers). It'd be like calling your flange a pipe too. That is too say a person could try to argument semantics that a flange is pipe, but calling it as such for utility purposes is useless.

As a plumber, all I need from you is to point me in the direction of whatever I’m looking for, and maybe check inventory if I can’t find what I need on the shelf. I fully understand that Home Depot and Lowe’s don’t make a habit of hiring tradesman to work for nearly minimum wage, and that isn’t the fault of the employees I interact with. On that note, I will admit it’s annoying when I’m in my work uniform and I’m grabbing parts at Home Depot, and I keep getting stopped by customers to answer their plumbing questions. I always smile and answer as best I can, because I’m hoping they will decide it’s above their pay grade and call me, but honestly I just wanna be left alone to get my parts in peace.

To be fair, people really should learn to research that kind of stuff themselves instead of relying on a bunch of underpaid employees to know it. I work in a meat dept. at a large retail chain and the amount of questions I get just makes me wonder if these people have ever heard of Google. Like, I'm sorry but I don't get paid enough to know what the difference between a flank steak and a chuck eye is. It's meat, either buy it or don't lol.

The problem is ego, of you're not talented enough to compete with people who can do straight trades, then your expectations are lower and your time line longer. The manager/owner of such a store is no different, with the difference being that the see saw might propel them only day enough to see what's the cost truly is. So if it takes you three years providing tools for home builders and trades people and all sorts them you go do your trade, you're three years behind. But if you do this lazy, because you don't have access to the quality teachers that are focused on trades, engineers and such you're teaching yourself. If you teach yourself, take longer and end up with an who that is not "how can I help you, so you might help me" well, I'm a tradesperson, I wouldn't help you. This as a metaphor for society is where most of our problems are, be they hardware stores, Coca cola plants or Google HQ. That this process of rank heirarchy and idea structures is obscured helps no one but those isometrics.

I worked at a big box hardware store in my late teens / early 20's. I didn't know much when I started but it wasn't hard to learn the basics of each department. Eventually, I knew almost the entire store and where everything was. If someone had a technical question about electrical or plumbing and I couldn't answer it, I would find someone who could. I realize that this isn't typical... in fact, a lot of the customers were shocked when I could answer their question or walk them straight to the item they needed. A few times, the customer asked to speak with the manager, so they could say a few nice things about me. The manager didn't give a shit. Said thank you to the customer, but I never got a raise or any real recognition. That's just how those places are. And that's why most of the employees behave as shown in this clip.

I expected the availialbe worker to give me a hand, but he didn't and I had to wait for the phone guy to finish. I then held up the adaptor and asked if they had any like it in stock. He wandered over to the display cabinet and took a brief look before declaring "nah you can't buy those in this country". What the hell was I holding then? Went to a different chain and found what I wanted in five minutes. The bad store chain closed down a few months later.

Now that im older and im a plumber The associate has a point. I have NEVER found an L pipe in any supply store, if you want to route a pipe at a 90 degree angle you use a 90 elbow. It is possible to bend pipes but ive yet to see a store that sells pre-bent pipes Also those “U pipes” are definitely pipes but they look more like a p-trap
@nev.catalyst7478
@nev.catalyst7478 Жыл бұрын
Plumber here too. The store clerk is partly right, all pipes are straight, the ones that arent are custom made with bends at specific angles. To make all other pipes "bend," you need pipe fitting. Hank just needed a galvanized (looks like he's holding a galvanized pipe) 90 elbow or he could have bought a pipe bender lol

Out of curiosity, could you bend a thin galvanized pipe with a heat gun and a bench vice to get a 90 degree bend for a water pipe or would the heat on the galvanized pipe make it so it would be unhealthy to get drinking water out?
@guytech7310
@guytech7310 Ай бұрын
@@mischievousone9999 You never be able to bent it with a heat gun, as it would never get hot enough to soft for you to bend. If you tried to make a sharp 90 "L" the pipe would either kink (preventing flow) or crack. As far as contamination. Well its possible ordinary galvanzied pipe might have some heavy metals, as zinc ore usually contains other heavy metals. Best option is to not use galvanized pipe for potable water. Pex, or copper. Although both of those materials have issues if the muni water is treated with chloramines (which is probably toxic)

I worked at a plumbing supply warehouse for 2 years and sold and delivered literal tons of pipe to residential and corporate job sites in a day, none of it was L shaped. The kid is right. All their piping is straight as is 99% of pipe. What Hank points at and calls a "U pipe" is not a pipe. It's a fitting. You wouldn't have L shaped pipes 99% of the time unless it was bent for the specific job but that would be purchased straight still or you would cut a straight pipe and use a 90 degree elbow (or whatever angle you needed) fitting. Which is going to be the case for the septic tank Hank is installing

@jdthesexpert05

@Sebastian Hahn This is just an argument on semantics. I mean yeah you could technically call a fitting a pipe because it fits the definition but you could also call a straw a pipe or a toilet paper tube a pipe because they also fit the definition. A pipe is a pipe and a fitting is a fitting. Pipes are straight and fittings are what allow you to fit a bunch of straight pipes together to make something that is not straight. And yes I know you can bend a pipe with a pipe bender and it's no longer straight. But when you bought it it was straight because that's how pipes are sold. They're straight.
@jdthesexpert05
@jdthesexpert05 2 жыл бұрын
@Sebastian Hahn He said while sipping Mountain Dew out of his pipe which was amusingly dubbed a "straw" by those simple minded beasts. Interestingly enough his Mountain Dew was also in a pipe with a pipe cap at the end. Some people might simply call it a cup but Sebastian Hahn was no simpleton. He knew the truth about pipes, they were everywhere. Garden hose? I think not, that's an industry term after all. That's a goddamn flexible pipe. Tornado? Heh, that's just a pipe made out of wind. Artery? What's that? Oh you mean a blood pipe. Electrical cord? Why that's just a pipe for electrons. Have I proven my point yet? There's a reason why there are specific terms for different things, I mean it's kind of the whole reason language exists in the first place. Yeah you could call a straw a pipe and you wouldn't technically be wrong but you would confuse the shit out of anyone listening to you.

I was once given 15 minutes notice to do an hour long demo on how to install a new toilet to a seated audience of about a dozen customers. Went something like "Unscrew everything, rip that badboy off, put in a new wax seal, stick your new toilet on, screw everything back down... uuuh... don't forget your teflon tape." "Which side of the wax seal goes on the bottom?" "huh?...uhh... The bottom side. Next question please..." One time, me and my brother-in-law (who's 15 years older than me) went into a store and he asked one of the workers where a part was. The worker said they didn't have that, only my brother-in-law found it right there in the store, and laughed. The worker promptly glared at him for the remainder of our time there. XD

@Marshall Banana I've worked in lots of retail places too. I also was a retail bench jeweler for five years. Its maybe one thing if its yarn and construction paper you are talking about. But you don't wanna fuck around with gas tools, or pretty much any kind of high power tool for that matter. If someone working at a hardware store is giving customers false information, then they shouldn't be working at a hardware store. Plain and simple. I don't care if they train you or not, you should probably make sure you know what you are talking about before you tell some random customer all about it. Most customers aren't knowledgeable about what they are buying, and they will assume anybody who works there is. If that customer goes home and finds out you were wrong the hard way, it could lead to a whole can of worms and legal issues. You also won't have a job if you get identified as the wise guy. Never underestimate the power of stupid. Especially if it takes the form of an ignorant customer. One customer could ruin your whole career if you screw them enough.

Once when I was working at Lowe's I was helping a man find fuel for a 4 cycle engine. He grabbed the oil for the engine, and I asked him if needed the fuel as well or just the oil. He said he just needed fuel. I told him that what he had his hands on was oil. He asked me what the difference was. Damn near split his reality in two. Have not seen him since, I worry for him.

this is so true, most of the time someone at Home Depot won't know what your talking about to the point where if they ask if I need anything I just say no thanks just looking. it is much more effective to just find what your looking for on your own in most cases, I worked in construction as a Summer job for 3 or 4 years so I usually know exactly what I am looking for when planning a small project around the house.
