An untouched jewel in the vast expanse of solitude, where the whispers of the wind and the secrets of the sea create a symphony of serenity. The world's most remote paradise island, where time dances lazily to the rhythm of nature's heart, dream to visit this lovely island

Anchored off Tristan da Cunha in the early 80s on RFA Tidespring it looked great but no shore leave. Would love to go back and walk on the land.

Correct me if i am wrong, but after the volcano erupted in 1961, the whole island was evacuated and its inhabitants only came back in 1965. It reminds me of Alderney somehow where the island was also evacuated before the German invasion and people had to lobby hard to be allowed back
@FactoidFactoryYT

100 percent correct, some inhabitants already started to return in 63.

I am definitely an island person and St Helen, Tristan and Ascension have a particular attraction, not forgetting the Falkland Islands where a RAF friend of mine was posted band another acquaintance from Alderney was a diver there. Both have very fond memories. Striking to me is that although British overseas territories, apart from the Falklands, they all very much dépend from South Africa on the logistical side.

The South African navy were primarily responsible for the evacuation.

The inhabitants were transferred to the UK in 1961, I remember it well as I was at school at the time. They were housed in ex. RAF billets at Calshot near Southampton. The houses were renovated before they arrived. Whether they enjoyed the area I'm not sure, but it's on the edge of the New Forest, however in the winter the winds whipping off the Solent can be cold and quite biting. The road today where the houses are, has been renamed Triston Close and is very attractive. Quite a lot of the islanders decided to remain in England, but the majority did return to the island.

Cuna in spanish, berth, birth place. Yet this is portuguese Cunha, or Cunya, in aproximate sound rendering. Cugna, Cuña, Cunha, CunYa, all sounding alike. A proper family name, Cunha/CunYa, but also like in the cun/eiform script, the name of a wedge-shaped tool, in portuguese a cunha, used in cuneiform script to carve sumerian letters in/on clay tablets, for instance.

The prononciation is da Cunya (Da Cunha). This is portugese name. The English have never been able to prononce correctly the names from latin countries and i always wondered if they don't do it on purpose.

Tristan de Cunha remained uncharted after the 1506 discovery. The 1810 discovery by American sealers thus became a small strategic advantage for the US Navy during the War of 1812, because the island appeared on US naval charts, but not on British. So it became a secret naval rendezvous point the Americans could use without fear of interception by the British, 1812-1815.

I’ll never understand people who flock to a KZfaq video comment section like this, where they copy/paste Wikipedia pages that anyone on the planet can look up, as if they’re imparting wisdom or spittin’ facts. There’s always one in every comment section.

It was taken control of by the British in August 1816 on behalf of King George III, since then it has been part of the British Empire
@veronicaroach3667

That was in the era when British explorers (and French & Dutch & Portuguese !) were sailing the world looking for anything they could take ownership of - including islands ! Hence the 'British Empire' that was basically a huge chunk of the world at it's peak ! I'm a Brit & was brought up to revere this concept - you know 'Britannia rules the waves' - things change, but there are still a lot of places where the Brits settled & still want to belong to the mother country. Some places like the Falkland Islands are under contention so more & more places may gradually pull away or end up leaving the British realm to become independent as most of the old 'colonies' have done.
