My words are harsh and over the top. That comment is not meant to discourage but encourage. So to clarify technically being able to play on any level makes you a musician. If you can only play in one or two keys please continue to grow. With that said it’s important that we come with our best for the kingdom. That includes playing in all keys. Not every instrument has a transpose function. I tell you the truth, flashy chords will become simple triads if that real quick if you are unfamiliar with the key.

If I have a comment to say it’s this: Many people would not know how or where to place those tritones coming from a CCM background. If you can take a CCM (true CCM) song and utilize minor7 (b5) or dominant chords on straight major, sus, or minor chords, it would be helpful to know where (its function and what its leading to or replacing). Then take a song by Hillsong and something current (WayMaker) or even Chasing After You... Where do those chords fit in those songs or just in Kim Burrell’s song? This is the dilemma I run into. I’m sure the easiest place to start is utilizing diminished seventh chords or dominant 7(b9) chords, but utilizing dominant 7(b5,#9) chords and the variations?????? So, help would be greatly appreciated. I also heard a version of Happy by Tasha Cobbs and the musicians were doing all types of substitutions for that song.
@jakejacobs126
@jakejacobs126 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure Id call it a dilemma. Like I mentioned before. Placing a tritone in a song where it doesn't belong will ruin it. Try to only place them where they belong. Not everything needs a reharmonization. I will say that they can be placed in faster songs. Chasing after you would be easier than Waymaker. Simple is not always a bad thing. I myself can throw many movements and subs into either song but at what cost?

Of course by now I'm hoping someone has said it before: using the term C sharp to reference the key is totally inappropriate. The simple reason is, this isn't how the key is represented by its signature of five flats. It is strictly called the key of D flat. The terms are not interchangeable, not in the context of the key title.

That is does. However you did push yourself to play in the keys you can play in well. It wouldn’t take more pushing to play in all twelve. Not every instrument has a transpose. The push is well worth it.

First, what does playing in every key have to do with being a gospel musician as if other genres of music don't have songs that are played in the keys of A, E, D and B. Second, saying someone isn't a gospel musician just because they can't play fluently in those keys and you can is rather self-indulged and arrogant. Third, are you helping the people that you're criticizing Playing in those keys is very difficult. You did say "difficult keys". If you're not helping or sharing your expertise with other musicians that can't play in those keys, you lose the right to tell them that they're not a gospel musician just because they can't. That's piss more musicianship. Being a great musician means absolutely nothing without that same level of musicianship and humility. This coming from a musician that does play in every key and is HUMBLE enough to share what I know. Now, that we've gotten past that, this is a great video; however, tritones in a worship SONG are great but playing tritones in a worship atmosphere is overkill. In a high, INTIMATE worship setting, simple chords and simple progressions work best. 3 or 4 simple chords repeated over and over again. Works like a charm!
@jakejacobs126
@jakejacobs126 6 жыл бұрын
J Laron Rhodes not sure you read my pinned comment. All good. Luckily, today’s Gospel music is in all keys. Many musicians that I know play in A E D B keys just to show prowess. Kim Burrells Over and Over again is in the key of D among other keys. I new I would eventually get a flaming comment for that and that’s ok if it opens good discussion. I will however stick to my comment that we need to be masters of our craft and learn every key. It’s my goal to push musicians out of their comfort zones.

Sorry my guy I don't totally agree. A famous jazz musician once said learn your key slowing. And get good in that key than move to the next. There are a lot of musicians who get a pay check in the church before the one who knows his keys will get one. Just fact of life, i'm sure someone will disagree.

So you would rather transpose? That’s cheating. Drummers can’t transpose...guitarist can’t transpose...bass players can’t transpose, why should you be able to SHORT CHANGE every Sunday? When you learn to play in every key, you’ll never have to become dependent on a button or feel like you don’t know what you’re doing ever again. I play in all keys but don't change the definition of what a gospel musician is. A musician that plays gospel it didn't say a musician that plays gospel in every key that's silly. That's kind of like the other phrase you said about playing tritones in church is a distraction you were wrong then and you're wrong now. That can discourage upcoming musicians. You were distracted by CCM music LOL.

@@jakejacobs126 professional is another word you have to look up and understand what a professional musician is. Is there are professional musicians that are not able to play in all keys. Richard Martin A technical definition won’t get you hired sadly nor will ones heart. If my discouraging someone makes them break free of what’s limiting them, life’s tough. There are places you can go to be babied into better musicianship. This is not that channel.

@@jakejacobs126 I see people all the time getting hurt and can't play and all keys some only plan to Keys LOL. I'm only saying we must always communicate and teach in truth and this is not to keep from baby musicians to be better. I'm not good at lying and I feel a certain way when truth is not 100% conveyed. You have to do better with definition. Some people get paid more than two or three musicians that can't read and playing Five keys.
